Access to Academics: Planning Instruction for K-12 Classrooms with ELLs takes a different look at language than most other books – it addresses it as... something students must use constantly, in a variety of school venues and in different ways depending on the context. The book shows language as vital to content access and thereby academic achievement, but, more importantly, it also provides step-by-step instructions explaining how to help students acquire the language they need. Although the main emphasis is on English language learners (ELLs), the term “diverse learners” used throughout also encompasses the great variety in any classroom of student backgrounds, abilities, needs, and interests.

At the end of the twentieth century, intellectual property rights collided with everyday life. Expansive copyright laws and digital rights management... technologies sought to shut down new forms of copying and remixing made possible by the Internet. International laws expanding patent rights threatened the lives of millions of people around the world living with HIV/AIDS by limiting their access to cheap generic medicines. For decades, governments have tightened the grip of intellectual property law at the bidding of information industries; but recently, groups have emerged around the world to challenge this wave of enclosure with a new counter-politics of "access to knowledge" or "A2K." They include software programmers who took to the streets to defeat software patents in Europe, AIDS activists who forced multinational pharmaceutical companies to permit copies of their medicines to be sold in poor countries, subsistence farmers defending their rights to food security or access to agricultural biotechnology, and college students who created a new "free culture" movement to defend the digital commons. Access to Knowledge in the Age of Intellectual Property maps this emerging field of activism as a series of historical moments, strategies, and concepts. It gathers some of the most important thinkers and advocates in the field to make the stakes and strategies at play in this new domain visible and the terms of intellectual property law intelligible in their political implications around the world. A Creative Commons edition of this work will be freely available online.

In many non-industrial, non-Western societies, power and prestige are closely linked to the extent of an individual's or group's perceived connection to... the supernatural realm, which also explains and validates tangible activities such as economic success, victories in war, or control over lucrative trade. Affines (in-laws), ancestors, and aristocrats, in particular, are connected to the realm of creative cosmological origins (i.e., to Genesis), which accords them distinctive, supernatural powers and gives them a natural and legitimate right to worldly authority. This is the hypothesis that Mary W. Helms pursues in this broadly cross-cultural study of aristocracy in chiefly societies. She begins with basic ideas about the dead, ancestors, affines, and concepts of cosmological origins. This leads her to a discussion of cosmologically defined hierarchies, the qualities that characterize aristocracy, and the political and ideological roles of aristocrats as wife-givers and wife-takers (that is, as in-laws). She concludes by considering various models that explain how societies may develop or define aristocracies.

Winner of the 2005 Whitbread Novel Award, shortlisted for the 2005 Man Booker Prize and the 2006 Orange Prize, "The Accidental" by Scottish author Ali... Smith is a novel about what happens to one family when a stranger arrives in their midst. Arresting and wonderful, "The Accidental" pans in on the Norfolk holiday home of the Smart family one hot summer. There a beguiling stranger called Amber appears at the door bearing all sorts of unexpected gifts, trampling over family boundaries and sending each of the Smarts scurrying from the dark into the light. A novel about the ways that seemingly chance encounters irrevocably transform our understanding of ourselves, "The Accidental" explores the nature of truth, the role of fate and the power of storytelling. "A beguiling page-turner...a brilliant creation. To read "The Accidental" is to be excited from first to last". ("Independent"). "Joyous, a shot across the bows...writing as rapture, as giddy delight". ("The Times"). "Brilliant and engaging, frequently hilarious...Smith makes one look at the world afresh". ("Sunday Telegraph"). The award-winning Ali Smith is one of the most talented modern British writers; her novels, "Hotel World" and "There but for the", and her collections of short stories, "Other Stories and Other Stories", "The First Person and Other Stories" and "The Whole Story and Other Stories", are available in Penguin paperback.
