This volume collects the brilliant lectures which the great actor Michael Chekhov presented at his studio classes in New York in 1941. His technique and... philosophy of acting initially derived from his Moscow Art Theatre work with Stanislavsky. Under such titles as "The Psychological Gesture," "The Imagination," "Continuous Acting," the Chekhov teaching method of psycho-physical exercises, improvisations, scene study, and "Questions and Answers" reveals its continued importance for actor training today.

Who really knows how to get the most from a workforce: the manager or the employees? Each has a different approach to effective management what really... motivates employees to go the extra mile. Each approaches management issues from a different angle - a different perspective - and without understanding both points of view, the picture is never fully complete. Perspectives on Managing Employees is the first book to offer both sides of the story. In an easy-to-read, question/answer format, Michael A. Fina provides the manager's perspective while a host of real employees gives the workforce point of view on topics including interviews and the first few days on the job, building and improving the relationship, the importance and best methods of celebrating, managing through problems and issues and a whole lot more. What makes this book different from other management books is that there is no author collaboration or sharing of information during the writing process. None of the authors were aware of what the others were writing. The result is a fascinating, no-holds-barred look at effective management as both the manager and employees see it, leaving readers with a list of action items and a better understanding of core management concepts to dramatically improve production and results.

“What you have in your hands is a bomb. But it is the kind you need to hold on to for dear life, not run away from.” —From the Foreword, John Lee... Clark Christopher Jon Heuer lost his hearing early, but not before “being able to hear a lot as a kid.” He also received a good education, both in a speech-oriented setting and a signing environment. These varied experiences provided him with the perfect background to write about biases he faced, not only those of a mostly oblivious hearing society, but also those of ideologically restrictive members of the Deaf community. BUG: Deaf Identity and Internal Revolution combines new work of Heuer’s with his best columns from The Tactile Mind Weekly and the National Association of the Deaf’s Mind Over Matter. He addresses all topics – exit interviews, baldness, faith healing, marriage, cats, Christmas trips, backyard campfires in boxer shorts – with a withering wit that spares no aspect of life and deafness. Being “bugged” for Heuer began early: “When I was growing up, my mother’s response to every problem I had was: ‘Well, he just needs to adjust to his deafness.’ Bloody nose? ‘Chris, you need to adjust to your deafness.’ Homework not done? ‘I know it’s hard adjusting to your deafness, honey, but ....’ Acne scarring? ‘Lots of teenagers get zits, Chris. I know it’s hard for you, dealing with this while trying to adjust to your ....’” He rebelled then, and continues through his even-handed irreverence in BUG, a bomb that should go off in everyone’s consciousness about being deaf and Deaf.

Victor Hugo s Bug-Jargal (1826) is one of the most important works of nineteenth-century colonial fiction, and quite possibly the most sustained... novelistic treatment of the Haitian Revolution by a major European author. This Broadview edition makes Hugo s novel available in a completely new English translation, the first in over one hundred years. Set in 1791, during the first months of a slave revolt that would eventually lead to the creation of the black republic of Haiti in 1804, Bug-Jargal is a stirring tale of interracial friendship and rivalry, a provocative account of the ties that bind a young Frenchman to one of the rebel leaders and the tragic misunderstandings that threaten to sever those ties completely. This Broadview edition contains a critical introduction and a broad selection of appendices, including Hugo s never-before-translated 1820 short story "Bug-Jargal," contemporary reviews of the novel, documents pertaining to the young Hugo s poetics and politics, and selections from his source materials about the Haitian Revolution.

In a joint effort between the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine, this books attempts to bridge the knowledge/awareness... divide separating health care professionals from their potential partners in systems engineering and related disciplines. The goal of this partnership is to transform the U.S. health care sector from an underperforming conglomerate of independent entities (individual practitioners, small group practices, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, community health centers et. al.) into a high performance "system" in which every participating unit recognizes its dependence and influence on every other unit. By providing both a framework and action plan for a systems approach to health care delivery based on a partnership between engineers and health care professionals, "Building a Better Delivery System" describes opportunities and challenges to harness the power of systems-engineering tools, information technologies and complementary knowledge in social sciences, cognitive sciences and business/management to advance the U.S. health care system.
