This book focuses on a gap in current social work practice theory: community change. Much work in this area of macro practice, particularly around... "grassroots" community organizing, has a somewhat dated feel to it, is highly ideological in orientation, or suffers from superficiality, particularly in the area of theory and practical application. Set against the context of an often narrowly constructed "clinical" emphasis on practice education, coupled with social work’s own current rendering of "scientific management," community practice often takes second or third billing in many professional curricula despite its deep roots in the overall field of social welfare. Drawing on extensive case study data from three significant community-building initiatives, program data from numerous other community capacity-building efforts, key informant interviews, and an excellent literature review, Chaskin and his colleagues draw implications for crafting community change strategies as well as for creating and sustaining the organizational infrastructure necessary to support them. The authors bring to bear the perspectives of a variety of professional disciplines including sociology, urban planning, psychology, and social work. Building Community Capacity takes a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to a subject of wide and current concern: the role of neighborhood and community structures in the delivery of human services or, as the authors put it, "a place where programs and problems can be fitted together." Social work scholars and students of community practice seeking new conceptual frameworks and insights from research to inform novel community interventions will find much of value in Building Community Capacity.

Comprehension problems have become an epidemic: One out of every four secondary school students is unable to read and comprehend the material in... textbooks.* Start addressing the root of the problem today with this practical guidebook, designed to strengthen adolescents' reading comprehension and written expression so they can master academic content. Developed for middle and high school teachers, this book helps educators improve students' reading and writing through Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD), an evidence-based instructional approach that shows students how to apply proven strategies independently to boost their school success. Teachers will get complete lesson plans for teaching strategies thatUse proven, validated SRSD methods that are based on sound instructional theory and have had documented positive effects.Build a foundation for higher achievement. Teachers will discover ways to embed reading, writing, and organization strategies into science and social studies lessons, so students can sharpen their understanding of complex academic content. Are classroom-ready and easy-to-use, with helpful lesson overviews and objectives, suggested teacher scripts, explicit step-by-step instructions, and detailed vignettes.Help a wide range of struggling learners, from students with disabilities to learners who simply need extra supports (great for the whole class or with individual students!).Free up teacher time. When students learn self-regulation strategies, teachers have much more flexibility they can assist one group while other students engage in productive independent work. Practical, photocopiable worksheets and other instructional materials make the lessons easy to implement in any classroom. Teachers will help students develop new skills with a variety of self-monitoring checklists, goal charts, self-instruction sheets, graphic organizers, and more. With the highly effective strategies in this research-backed guide, educators will help build a stronger foundation for academic success and ensure that all of their students are reading and writing to learn.*The Alliance for Excellent Education, 2006Improve skills critical to higher achievement: vocabulary developmentessay writingstory writingbiography writingidentifying the main idea of a paragraphsummarizing contentquick writingsustaining attentiongoal settingnote organizationclassroom preparationhomework completion

How were huge stones moved from quarries to the sites of Egyptian pyramids? How did the cathedral builders of the Middle Ages lift blocks to great... heights by muscle power alone? In this intriguing book John Fitchen explains and illustrates the solutions to these and many other puzzles in preindustrial building construction. This is the first general survey of the practices and role of the builder (as opposed to the designer) in constructing an array of structures. Fitchen's approach gives a valuable hands-on feel for what it's like to work with ropes and ladders, wedges and slings; with crews engaged in well digging, bridge building, and the transporting of obelisks hundreds of miles by water and over land. The buildings discussed range from the tents, tepees, and igloos of nomadic tribes to the monumental pyramids of Egypt, the temples of Greece, the aqueducts of Rome, and the cathedrals of medieval Europe.John Fitchen, a registered architect, is Professor of Fine Arts, Emeritus, at Colgate University and the author of The Construction of Gothic Cathedrals and The New World Dutch Barn.

Building Construction Estimating furnishes readers with specific details on how a general building contractor derives the cost of a project before it... begins, and how the estimate fits into the total construction process. The book provides coverage of such areas as determining labor productivity and wages, selecting equipment and assigning productivity rates and costs, acquiring specialty contractor prices, and assigning overhead costs and profit. The material is presented from the point of view of a general contractor working on a competitively bid stipulated-sum (lump-sum) contract. However, other contract methods and the effects they have on the estimating process are also discussed. Furthermore, the principles of estimating for the specialty trades are discussed from the reference of a general building contractor, and how the subcontractor's bid will affect the total project cost is presented. Of special note is the book's introduction and utilization of computers in the estimating process - enabling readers to utilize new technology in an effective and efficient manner. The book is organized in a way that first teaches the reader to perform many of the estimating activities manually, then guides them in developing a computer spreadsheet. The use of spreadsheets empowers the reader to go beyond the manual calculations and develop new and more proficient solutions to estimating problems.
