A Course for Teaching English Learners (CTEL Handbook) offers strategies to equip teachers to work with English language learners, balancing fundamental... principles with practical classroom techniques. This exciting new book offers in a single volume a wealth of background principles underlying the cultural, linguistic, and sociocultural contexts and foundations of learning and by providing a comprehensive framework that doesn’t only focus on reading and writing. Unlike other books, the CTEL Handbook provides a flexible, comprehensive underlying framework that outlines both psychological and sociocultural contexts for English language acquisition and structured content delivery across the elementary, middle school, and high school grades. Provisions in the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) call for yearly accountability in English language growth for language—minority students. The CTEL Handbook is the first to address the new focus on testing procedures, as well as adaptation for English learners during the test-taking process. Throughout, Lynne Diaz-Rico’s expertise in matters related to educating English learners is consistently evident. Not only does she provide the necessary background knowledge needed to educate English learners but she also includes a variety of classroom methods for English language development in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and computer-assisted instruction, making the CTEL Handbook equally effective as a classroom text and as a reference tool for practicing teachers.

This is a comprehensive textbook on modern algebra written by an internationally renowned specialist. It covers material traditionally found in advanced... undergraduate and basic graduate courses and presents it in a lucid style. The author includes almost no technically difficult proofs, and reflecting his point of view on mathematics, he tries wherever possible to replace calculations and difficult deductions with conceptual proofs and to associate geometric images to algebraic objects. The effort spent on the part of students in absorbing these ideas will pay off when they turn to solving problems outside of this textbook. Another important feature is the presentation of most topics on several levels, allowing students to move smoothly from initial acquaintance with the subject to thorough study and a deeper understanding. Basic topics are included, such as algebraic structures, linear algebra, polynomials, and groups, as well as more advanced topics, such as affine and projective spaces, tensor algebra, Galois theory, Lie groups, and associative algebras and their representations. Some applications of linear algebra and group theory to physics are discussed. The book is written with extreme care and contains over 200 exercises and 70 figures. It is ideal as a textbook and also suitable for independent study for advanced undergraduates and graduate students.

Serre's "A Course in Arithmetic" is a concentrated, modern introduction to basically three areas of number theory, quadratic forms, Dirichlet's density... theorem, and modular forms. The first edition was very well accepted and is now one of the leading introductory texts on the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. "...The book is carefully written - in particular very much self-contained. As was the intention of the author, it is easily accessible to graduate or even undergraduate students, yet even the advanced mathematician will enjoy reading it. The last chapter, more difficult for the beginner, is an introduction to contemporary problems." - "American Scientist".

Combinatorics, a subject dealing with ways of arranging and distributing objects, involves ideas from geometry, algebra, and analysis. The breadth of... the theory is matched by that of its applications, which include topics as diverse as codes, circuit design and algorithm complexity. It has thus become an essential tool in many scientific fields. In this second edition the authors have made the text as comprehensive as possible, dealing in a unified manner with such topics as graph theory, extremal problems, designs, colorings, and codes. The depth and breadth of the coverage make the book a unique guide to the whole of the subject. It is ideal for courses on combinatorical mathematics at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level, and working mathematicians and scientists will also find it a valuable introduction and reference.

This carefully written textbook is an introduction to the beautiful concepts and results of complex analysis. It is intended for international bachelor... and master programmes in Germany and throughout Europe; in the Anglo-American system of university education the content corresponds to a beginning graduate course. The book presents the fundamental results and methods of complex analysis and applies them to a study of elementary and non-elementary functions elliptic functions, Gamma- and Zeta function including a proof of the prime number theorem ... and - a new feature in this context! - to exhibiting basic facts in the theory of several complex variables. Part of the book is a translation of the authors' German text "Einfuhrung in die komplexe Analysis"; some material was added from the by now almost "classical" text "Funktionentheorie" written by the authors, and a few paragraphs were newly written for special use in a master's programme. Content Analysis in the complex plane - The fundamental theorems of complex analysis - Functions on the plane and on the sphere - Integral formulas, residues and applications - Non-elementary functions - Meromorphic functions of several variables - Holomorphic maps: Geometric aspects Readership Advanced undergraduates bachelor students and beginning graduate students master's programme Lecturers in mathematics About the authors Professor Dr. Ingo Lieb, Department of Mathematics, University of Bonn Professor Dr. Wolfgang Fischer, Department of Mathematics, University of Bremen

The constructive approach to mathematics has recently enjoyed a renaissance. This was caused largely by the appearance of Bishop's Foundations of... Constructive Analysis, but also by the proliferation of powerful computers, which stimulated the development of constructive algebra for implementation purposes. In this book, the authors present the fundamental structures of modern algebra from a constructive point of view. Beginning with basic notions, the authors proceed to treat PID's, field theory (including Galois theory), factorisation of polynomials, noetherian rings, valuation theory, and Dedekind domains.

Convexity is a simple idea that manifests itself in a surprising variety of places. This fertile field has an immensely rich structure and numerous... applications. Barvinok demonstrates that simplicity, intuitive appeal, and the universality of applications make teaching (and learning) convexity a gratifying experience. The book will benefit both teacher and student: It is easy to understand, entertaining to the reader, and includes many exercises that vary in degree of difficulty. Overall, the author demonstrates the power of a few simple unifying principles in a variety of pure and applied problems. The notion of convexity comes from geometry. Barvinok describes here its geometric aspects, yet he focuses on applications of convexity rather than on convexity for its own sake. Mathematical applications range from analysis and probability to algebra to combinatorics to number theory. Several important areas are covered, including topological vector spaces, linear programming, ellipsoids, and lattices. Specific topics of note are optimal control, sphere packings, rational approximations, numerical integration, graph theory, and more. And of course, there is much to say about applying convexity theory to the study of faces of polytopes, lattices and polyhedra, and lattices and convex bodies. The prerequisites are minimal amounts of linear algebra, analysis, and elementary topology, plus basic computational skills. Portions of the book could be used by advanced undergraduates. As a whole, it is designed for graduate students interested in mathematical methods, computer science, electrical engineering, and operations research. The book will also be of interest to research mathematicians, who will find some results that are recent, some that are new, and many known results that are discussed from a new perspective.

This text is designed for first courses in financial calculus aimed at students with a good background in mathematics. Key concepts such as martingales... and change of measure are introduced in the discrete time framework, allowing an accessible account of Brownian motion and stochastic calculus. The Black-Scholes pricing formula is first derived in the simplest financial context. Subsequent chapters are devoted to increasing the financial sophistication of the models and instruments. The final chapter introduces more advanced topics including stock price models with jumps, and stochastic volatility. A large number of exercises and examples illustrate how the methods and concepts can be applied to realistic financial questions.
