Since the publication of the first edition of this classic textbook over thirty years ago, tens of thousands of students have used A Course in... Probability Theory. New in this edition is an introduction to measure theory that expands the market, as this treatment is more consistent with current courses. While there are several books on probability, Chung's book is considered a classic, original work in probability theory due to its elite level of sophistication.

Covering core topics that explore the government's role in the economy, this textbook is intended for third or fourth year undergraduate students and... first year graduate students. It includes markets, externalities, public goods, imperfect competition, asymmetric information and efficiency, and asymmetric information and income redistribution. A knowledge of intermediate microeconomics and basic calculus is assumed. Each chapter contains exercises at the end, whose solutions are available to instructors. The second edition of A Course in Real Analysis provides a solid foundation of real analysis concepts and principles, presenting a broad range of topics... in a clear and concise manner. The book is excellent at balancing theory and applications with a wealth of examples and exercises. The authors take a progressive approach of skill building to help students learn to absorb the abstract. Real world applications, probability theory, harmonic analysis, and dynamical systems theory are included, offering considerable flexibility in the choice of material to cover in the classroom. The accessible exposition not only helps students master real analysis, but also makes the book useful as a reference. * New chapter on Hausdorff Measure and Fractals* Key concepts and learning objectives give students a deeper understanding of the material to enhance learning* More than 200 examples (not including parts) are used to illustrate definitions and results* Over 1300 exercises (not including parts) are provided to promote understanding* Each chapter begins with a brief biography of a famous mathematician

First published in 1991, this book contains the core material for an undergraduate first course in ring theory. Using the underlying theme of projective... and injective modules, the author touches upon various aspects of commutative and noncommutative ring theory. In particular, a number of major results are highlighted and proved. The first part of the book, called "Projective Modules", begins with basic module theory and then proceeds to surveying various special classes of rings (Wedderburn, Artinian and Noetherian rings, hereditary rings, Dedekind domains, etc.). This part concludes with an introduction and discussion of the concepts of the projective dimension. Part II, "Polynomial Rings", studies these rings in a mildly noncommutative setting. Some of the results proved include the Hilbert Syzygy Theorem (in the commutative case) and the Hilbert Nullstellensatz (for almost commutative rings). Part III, "Injective Modules", includes, in particular, various notions of the ring of quotients, the Goldie Theorems, and the characterization of the injective modules over Noetherian rings. The book contains numerous exercises and a list of suggested additional reading. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in ring theory.

During the 90s robust control theory has seen major advances and achieved a new maturity, centered around the notion of convexity. The goal of this book... is to give a graduate-level course on this theory that emphasizes these new developments, but at the same time conveys the main principles and ubiquitous tools at the heart of the subject. Its pedagogical objectives are to introduce a coherent and unified framework for studying the theory, to provide students with the control-theoretic background required to read and contribute to the research literature, and to present the main ideas and demonstrations of the major results. The book will be of value to mathematical researchers and computer scientists, graduate students planning to do research in the area, and engineering practitioners requiring advanced control techniques.

This classic text has entered and held the field as the standard book on the applications of analysis to the transcendental functions. The authors... explain the methods of modern analysis in the first part of the book and then proceed to a detailed discussion of the transcendental function, unhampered by the necessity of continually proving new theorems for special applications. In this way the authors have succeeded in being rigorous without imposing on the reader the mass of detail that so often tends to make a rigorous demonstration tedious. Researchers and students will find this book as valuable as ever.

The application of engineering principles in divergent fields such as management science and communications as well as the advancement of several... approaches in theory and computation have led to growing interest in queueing models, creating the need for a comprehensive text. Emphasizing Markovian structures and the techniques that occur in different models, A Course on Queueing Models discusses recent developments in the field, different methodological tools - some of which are not available elsewhere - and computational techniques. While most books essentially address the classical methods of queueing theory, this text covers a broad range of methods both in theory and in computation. The first part of the textbook exposes you to many fundamental concepts at an introductory level and provides tools for practitioners. It discusses the basics in queueing theory for Markovian and regenerative non-Markovian models, statistical inference, simulation and some computational procedures, network and discrete-time queues, algebraic and combinatorial methods, and optimization. The second part delves deeper into the topics examined in the first part by presenting more advanced methods. This part also includes general queues, duality in queues, and recent advancements on computational methods and discrete-time queues. Each chapter contains a discussion section that summarizes material and highlights special features. Incorporating different queueing models, A Course on Queueing Models achieves an ideal balance between theory and practice, making it compatible for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, applied statisticians, and engineers.

Set theory is the mathematics of infinity and part of the core curriculum for mathematics majors. This book blends theory and connections with other... parts of mathematics so that readers can understand the place of set theory within the wider context. Beginning with the theoretical fundamentals, the author proceeds to illustrate applications to topology, analysis and combinatorics, as well as to pure set theory. Concepts such as Boolean algebras, trees, games, dense linear orderings, ideals, filters and club and stationary sets are also developed. Pitched specifically at undergraduate students, the approach is neither esoteric nor encyclopedic. The author, an experienced instructor, includes motivating examples and over 100 exercises designed for homework assignments, reviews and exams. It is appropriate for undergraduates as a course textbook or for self-study. Graduate students and researchers will also find it useful as a refresher or to solidify their understanding of basic set theory.

"An incisive consideration of the Supremes, offering erudite yet accessible clues to legal thinking on the most important level."--Kirkus ReviewsIn this... authoritative reckoning with the eighteen-year record of the Rehnquist Court, Georgetown law professor Mark Tushnet reveals how the decisions of nine deeply divided justices have left the future of the Court; and the nation; hanging in the balance. Many have assumed that the chasm on the Court has been between its liberals and its conservatives. In reality, the division was between those in tune with the modern post-Reagan Republican Party and those who, though considered to be in the Court's center, represent an older Republican tradition. As a result, the Court has modestly promoted the agenda of today's economic conservatives, but has regularly defeated the agenda of social issues conservatives; while paving the way for more radically conservative path in the future.
