This is the most current text on child and adolescent development for teachers available on the market. Covering early childhood through high school in... an easy-to-follow format, the book provides teachers with authentic, research-based strategies and guidelines for their classrooms. A strong emphasis on diversity among children is reflected throughout. The authors specifically apply child development concepts to topics of high interest and relevance to teachers, including social-emotional development, classroom discipline, humor, constructivism, and many others. Case studies and real-world vignettes further bridge the distance between research and the classroom, helping students be better prepared to create an environment that promotes optimal development in children.

Child and Adolescent Development is an exciting, first edition that offers teacher education a new child development text organized with a... chronological approach.  This means that descriptions of the physical, cognitive, and social and emotional development of children and adolescents are spiraled throughout the text as discussions examine the characteristics of and the developmental milestones of four major stages of development; infancy and toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescents. Each text part investigates the significant changes that happen during that developmental period and discusses what may  influence body growth, brain and motor development, language, intelligence, parent and peer relationships, and self identity.  Unique to this text is how the discussions are written from a global perspective, not only illustrating the universal and diverse contexts in which children and adolescents grow up but also demonstrating how cultural contexts cultivate the development of language and impact children's and adolescent's world views and their growth.    In Child and Adolescent Development, knowledgeable and revered authors, Anita Woolfolk and Nancy Perry, explore the implications and applications of the best research in child development.  They provide reliable and practical guidelines to help prospective teachers, and other professionals who intend to work with children and adolescents, recognize typical and atypical development and learn how to support the development of children and adolescents in positive ways

In May 1994 The American Psychiatric Association published the most recent version of DSM-IV, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.... DSM-IV is the primary diagnostic reference for mental health professionals in psychiatry, psychology, social work, and nursing. It provides brief descriptions of mental disorders in terms of their primary and associated features, age at onset, typical course, level of impairment, predisposing factors, complications, prevalence, sex ratio, and familial patterns. Although DSM-IV is one of the primary training and reference tools for mental health professionals, its scope and utility are limited. It is explicitly designed to be a diagnostic manual and therefore contains little regarding treatment -- the next step after diagnosis.Child and Adolescent Psychological Disorders: A Comprehensive Textbook mirrors the organization of DSM-IV but goes beyond a listing of diagnostic criteria by addressing what to do after the diagnosis is made. The text includes selections written by experts in both clinical psychology and psychiatry. Each chapter reviews the current research and provides diagnostic and assessment criteria, treatment recommendations, and assessment strategies for each disorder. An ideal text for courses in child and adolescent psychopathology and clinical psychology, Child and Adolescent Psychological Disorders: A Comprehensive Textbook is also an excellent reference for practitioners.

This interdisciplinary collection is the first to examine the history of child and family welfare from the vantage point of a single Canadian province,... British Columbia. It draws from the disciplines of social history, social work, Aboriginal studies, law, criminology, women's studies, and education to explore the creation and development of welfare for children and families in the twentieth century. The fifteen chapters examine conditions for children in institutions and describe the partial deinstitutionalization of services. The formation of a province-wide network of public social services is outlined as well as the ways in which social work practice was progressively professionalized over the century. Some of the ways in which provincial legislation and policy regulated the lives of families with disabled and mentally challenged children as well as those families adopting children is described. Finally, it analyzes campaigns to reform services and policy that led to the creation of pensions for mothers in the 1920s and family courts in the 1940s. Avenues for further research and questions for classroom discussion are provided.
