Many churches harbor harried congregations merely going through the motions--sleepwalking saints who fail to experience transformed living. Many are... unable and unwilling to share the gospel, convinced that it's not their "gift."True disciples do more than the minimum, explains Hull. They choose the life and commit to bringing Jesus to the lost. They live out their beliefs and walk the walk. Submission shows the doubting world that Christ is embedded in their character. Choose the Life is a practical tool as accessible to laypeople as ministry leaders. Any church seeking life-changing significance will be challenged by this cutting-edge resource. No hand-holding here, Choose the Life shows church members how to take individual responsibility for both being discipled and discipling others.

"Choosing a President" evaluates the Electoral College system and six legitimate alternatives to it. A team of 37 political scientists consider the... fundamental questions that go to the heart of the debate. On the basis of these deliberations, each contributor indicates the extent to which he or she supports or opposes the Electoral College and its alternatives. This title features: discussion on how the Electoral College was created, evolved, and currently works, providing fundamental historical and political knowledge; and a systematic account of current alternatives to the Electoral College offering three reforms and three possible replacements. It demonstrates two modes of political analysis: evaluating institutions and reforms according to their logical consistency with desired criteria, and evaluating institutions and reforms according to their (likely) consequences and implications. It helps improve students' understanding of political analysis.

Progress in genetic and reproductive technology now offers us the possibility of choosing what kinds of children we do and don't have. Should we welcome... this power, or should we fear its implications? There is no ethical question more urgent than this: we may be at a turning-point in the history of humanity. The renowned moral philosopher and best-selling author Jonathan Glover shows us how we might try to answer this question, and other provoking and disturbing questions to which it leads. Surely parents owe it to their children to give them the best life they can? Increasingly we are able to reduce the number of babies born with disabilities and disorders. But there is a powerful new challenge to conventional thinking about the desirability of doing so: this comes from the voices of those who have these conditions. They call into question the very definition of disability. How do we justify trying to avoid bringing people like them into being? In 2002 a deaf couple used sperm donated by a friend with hereditary deafness to have a deaf baby: they took the view that deafness is not a disability, but a difference. Starting with the issues raised by this case, Jonathan Glover examines the emotive idea of "eugenics", and the ethics of attempting to enhance people, for non-medical reasons, by means of genetic choices. Should parents be free, not only to have children free from disabilities, but to choose, for instance, the colour of their eyes or hair? This is no longer a distant prospect, but an existing power which we cannot wish away. What impact will such interventions have, both on the individuals concerned and on society as a whole? Should we try to make general improvements to the genetic make-up of human beings? Is there a central core of human nature with which we must not interfere? This beautifully clear book is written for anyone who cares about the rights and wrongs of parents' choices for their children, anyone who is concerned about our human future. Glover handles these uncomfortable questions in a controversial but always humane and sympathetic manner.

Choosing Colleges: How Social Class and Schools Structure Opportunity

Based on interviews with students, parents, and counselors as well as case studies of the college guidance environments of a working-class public... school, an upper-middle-class public school, a private preparatory school, and a Catholic school, McDonough examines the everyday experiences of high school seniors as they choose their colleges. The author shows that college choice is a more complex social and organizational reality than has been previously understood and shows how families and schools mutually influence individual student outcomes and our higher education opportunity structure. After half a century of increasing federal, state, and private investments in higher education, phenomenal growth in the number of colleges, and enrollments of almost fifteen million students, Choosing Colleges asks why it is that there are vast differentials in college access. McDonough addresses access and equity issues by documenting how student college-choice decision making is influenced by colleges, high schools, parents, friends, and the media.

Unlike most other texts for Multicultural Education on the market, this one provides practical and useful teaching strategies and class-tested lesson... plans, as well as a foundation for understanding the context of multicultural education.   Choosing Democracy was the first text of its kind to show teachers how to construct a curriculum that is truly democratic, while at the same time meeting the requirements of today’s standard’s based educational environment.    Most new teachers are not prepared to face the diversity of the classrooms of today.  Nor are they prepared to handle the many challenging issues that will arise in these multicultural and multilingual classes.  This book gives solid and substantial coverage of important issues facing teachers such as classroom management, critical thinking, cooperative learning, assisting English Language Learners, dealing with substantive values, and assessment.  It also teaches educators to formulate a deeper understanding of their own cultural frame of reference in order to develop a second multicultural perspective.   New To This Edition: NEW!  Provides ideas for teachers looking to change their curriculum in Chapter 12.  NEW!  Includes a new section with a new co-author, (Dr. Francisco Reveles) an expert on gang related behavior and bullying. NEW!  Illustrates ways to manage a classroom based on democratic principles and cultural proficiency–makes the text valuable to even the most reluctant reader. NEW!  Contains a new section on integrating technology and using the Internet in the classroom. NEW!  Features a thoroughly revised Chapter 13–Explains the major efforts at school reform and The No Child Left Behind Act.

Choosing Environmental Policy: Comparing Instruments and Outcomes...

The two distinct approaches to environmental policy include direct regulation-sometimes called 'command and control' policies-and regulation by... economic, or market-based incentives. This book is the first to compare the costs and outcomes of these approaches by examining realworld applications. In a unique format, paired case studies from the United States and Europe contrast direct regulation on one side of the Atlantic with an incentivebased policy on the other. For example, Germanys direct regulation of SO2 emissions is compared with an incentive approach in the U.S. Direct regulation of water pollution via the U.S. Clean Water Act is contrasted with Hollands incentive-based fee system. Additional studies contrast solutions for eliminating leaded gasoline and reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, CFCs, and chlorinated solvents. The cases presented in Choosing Environmental Policy were selected to allow the sharpest, most direct comparisons of direct regulation and incentive-based strategies. In practice, environmental policy is often a mix of both types of instruments. This innovative investigation will interest scholars, students, and policymakers who want more precise information as to what kind of 'blend' will yield the most effective policy. Are incentive instruments more efficient than regulatory ones? Do regulatory policies necessarily have higher administrative costs? Are incentive policies more difficult to monitor? Are firms more likely to oppose market-based instruments or traditional regulation? These are some of the important questions the authors address, often with surprising results.
