This text covers sixteen films ranging from Pietro Germi’s Divorzio all’italiana (Divorce Italian Style, 1961) to Pupi Avati’s Il cuore altrove (The Heart is Elsewhere, 2003). Exercises include vocabulary building, character analysis, narrative comprehension, scene analysis, advanced grammar, imaginary interviews, creative script writing, further research suggestions, and poetry analysis. Brief readings accompany each film. The sixteen films covered in this text range from Pietro Germi’s Divorzio all’italiana (Divorce Italian Style, 1961) to Pupi Avati’s Il cuore altrove (The Heart is Elsewhere, 2003), with the majority of them (fourteen) produced since 1988. They also cover a broad range of genres: comedy, drama, science fiction, historical, political, social. They are films that students and instructors find interesting and engaging. Readings accompany each film. The readings vary and augment the film screenings and class discussions. There are five types of readings: background information on the director and film, cultural explications, scene transcriptions, director’s comments, and poetry. While the first two serve to orient and contextualize the films for the students, the transcriptions allows for a more detailed linguistic analysis of a particular scene. The director’s comments provide an insightful interpretation to stimulate discussion. The poetry readings were inspired by filmic references and inspire students to expand their insights beyond the specific film. The text is entirely in Italian. The films may be assigned in any order. Each chapter provides a wealth of exercises and activities (both individual and group) from which to choose depending on the abilities of the students.

As the largest producer of films in the world, Indian cinema is both a major industry and a distinctive art form that permeates daily life in that... country and shapes emerging global cultures elsewhere. While much has been written on the history of Indian cinema, its iconography and aesthetics have yet to be analyzed as reflections of national and cultural identities. In this important new work, Rachel Dwyer and Divia Patel focus on the development of Bombay-based commercial cinema since 1913, exploring the symbolic role of settings and costumes in staging the nation and the function of makeup and hairstyles in defining notions of beauty, sexuality, and consumption. The authors also examine how factors such as ethnicity, modernization, and Westernization impact reception of film along caste, region, language, and religious lines. The economic influence of advertising in actually determining film content and the dissemination of its imagery are also discussed. Film studies scholars recently have begun to investigate advertising in the film industry and this book makes an important contribution to this emerging subfield in its engagement with Indian cinema and the impact of advertising on the culture at large.

"Offers an historically detailed examination of how Hollywood has depicted the physically disabled experience . . . thoughtfully argued and well... documented. . . . Anyone interested in how mainstream movies have shaped our images of the world ought to carefully read this fine book." --Douglas Gomery, author of The Hollywood Studio System "I enjoyed this book from its terrific title to its skillful interweaving of movie history with disability history. . . . It makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of where America gets its myths and stereotypes of disability." --Joseph Shapiro, author of No Pity: People with Disabilities Forging a New Civil Rights Movement Filmmakers have often encouraged us to regard people with physical disabilities in terms of pity, awe, humor, or fear--as "Others" who somehow deserve to be isolated from the rest of society. In this first history of the portrayal of physical disability in the movies, Martin Norden examines hundreds of Hollywood films (and notable international ones), finds their place within mainstream society, and uncovers the movie industry's practices for maintaining the status quo--keeping people with disabilities dependent and "in their place." Norden offers a dazzling array of physically disabled characters who embody or break out of these stereotypes that have both influenced and been symptomatic of society's fluctuating relationship with its physically diabled minority. He shows us "sweet innocents" like Tiny Tim, "obsessive avengers" like Quasimodo, variations on the disabled veteran, and many others. He observes the arrival of a new set of stereotypes tied to the growth of science and technology in the 1970s and 1980s, and underscores movies like My Left Foot and The Waterdance that display a newfound sensitivity. Norden's in-depth knowledge of disability history makes for a particularly intelligent and sensitive approach to this long-overlooked issue in media studies. Martin F. Norden teaches film as a professor of communication at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has co-authored Movies: A Language in Light and has written many articles on moving-image media.

Cinema of the Other Europe: The Industry and Artistry of East Central European Film is the first major study of the cinematic traditions of Poland,... Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia from 1945 to the present day. It explores the major schools of film-making and the main stages of development across the region during the period of state socialism up until the end of the Cold War as well as more recent transformations post-1989. The book examines how European cinema is still mostly synonymous with West European film and how the cinema of Eastern Europe is still largely excluded and under-explored. Including material on directors such as István Szabó ( Mephisto), Krzysztof Kieslowski ( Dekalog, Three Colors Trilogy) and Jan Sverák ( Kolya), this study of the 'other' European cinema thus constitutes a timely appraisal of film history and film studies debates.

In Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams, Donald Bogle tells–for the first time–the story of a place both mythic and real: Black Hollywood. Spanning sixty... years, this deliciously entertaining history uncovers the audacious manner in which many blacks made a place for themselves in an industry that originally had no place for them. Through interviews and the personal recollections of Hollywood luminaries, Bogle pieces together a remarkable history that remains largely obscure to this day. We discover that Black Hollywood was a place distinct from the studio-system-dominated Tinseltown–a world unto itself, with unique rules and social hierarchy. It had its own talent scouts and media, its own watering holes, elegant hotels, and fashionable nightspots, and of course its own glamorous and brilliant personalities. Along with famous actors including Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Hattie McDaniel (whose home was among Hollywood’s most exquisite), and, later, the stunningly beautiful Lena Horne and the fabulously gifted Sammy Davis, Jr., we meet the likes of heartthrob James Edwards, whose promising career was derailed by whispers of an affair with Lana Turner, and the mysterious Madame Sul-Te-Wan, who shared a close lifelong friendship with pioneering director D. W. Griffith. But Bogle also looks at other members of the black community–from the white stars’ black servants, who had their own money and prestige, to gossip columnists, hairstylists, and architects–and at the world that grew up around them along Central Avenue, the Harlem of the West.In the tradition of Hortense Powdermaker’s classic Hollywood: The Dream Factory and Neal Gabler’s An Empire of Their Own, in Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams, Donald Bogle re-creates a vanished world that left an indelible mark on Hollywood–and on all of America. From the Hardcover edition.

Massive data acquisition technologies--such as genome sequencing, high-throughput drug screening, and DNA arrays--are in the process of revolutionizing... biology and medicine. This concise, user-friendly and interdisciplinary guide to DNA microarray technology is an introduction and a reference for both biologists and computational scientists. The authors describe the underlying technologies and offer an awareness of the "noise" and pitfalls present in the data generated. They also provide an idea of the different data mining techniques and algorithms that are available to interpret data, and the advantages and disadvantages of each in differing situations.
