Classic African American Women's Narratives offers teachers, students, and general readers a one-volume collection of the most memorable and important... prose written by African American women before 1865. The book reproduces the canon of African American women's fiction and autobiography during the slavery era in U.S. history. Each text in the volume represents a "first." Maria Stewart's Religion and the Pure Principles of Morality (1831) was the first political tract authored by an African American woman. Jarena Lee's Life and Religious Experience (1836) was the first African American woman's spiritual autobiography. The Narrative of Sojourner Truth (1850) was the first slave narrative to focus on the experience of a female slave in the United States. Frances E. W. Harper's "The Two Offers" (1859) was the first short story published by an African American woman. Harriet E. Wilson's Our Nig (1859) was the first novel written by an African American woman. Harriet Jacob's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) was the first autobiography authored by an African American woman. Charlotte Forten's "Life on the Sea Islands" (1864) was the first contribution by an African American woman to a major American literary magazine (the Atlantic Monthly). Complemented with an introduction by William L. Andrews, this is the only one-volume collection to gather the most important works of the first great era of African American women's writing.

Since publication in 1979 Isabel Rivers' sourcebook has established itself as the essential guide to English Renaissance poetry. It: provides an... account of the main classical and Christian ideas, outlining their meaning, their origins and their transmission to the Renaissance; illustrates the ways in which Renaissance poetry drew on classical and Christian ideas; contains extracts from key classical and Christian texts and relates these to the extracts of the English poems which draw on them; includes suggestions for further reading, and an invaluable bibliographical appendix.

Written for engineers and engineering scientists, this book gives first priority to the formulation of problems, presenting the classical results as the... gold standard, and the numerical approach as a tool for obtaining solutions. The classical part is a revision of the text "Foundations of Solid Mechanics", with a much-expanded discussion on the theories of plasticity and large elastic deformation with finite strains. The computational part is all new and aims to solve major linear and nonlinear boundary-value problems.

Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory is a “hybrid” between a core textbook and a primary source reader. This book builds on the authors’... Sociological Theory in the Classical Era and Sociological Theory in the Contemporary Era, to combine the major writings of sociology’s core classical and contemporary theorists with an historical and theoretical framework for understanding them. It provides not just a biographical and theoretical summary of each theorist/reading, but, in addition, an overarching scaffolding which students can use to examine, compare, and contrast each theorists’ major themes and concepts. No other theory text combines such “student-friendly” explanation and analysis with original theoretical works.

This unique hybrid of text and readings combines the major writings of sociology’s core classical and contemporary theorists with an historical as... well as theoretical framework for understanding them. This novel approach provides students the analytical guidance necessary to interpret the readings. No other theory text combines such "student-friendly" explanation and analysis with original theoretical works.

Classical and Modern Numerical Analysis: Theory, Methods and Practice provides a sound foundation in numerical analysis for more specialized topics,... such as finite element theory, advanced numerical linear algebra, and optimization. It prepares graduate students for taking doctoral examinations in numerical analysis. The text covers the main areas of introductory numerical analysis, including the solution of nonlinear equations, numerical linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, approximation theory, numerical integration, and boundary value problems. Focusing on interval computing in numerical analysis, it explains interval arithmetic, interval computation, and interval algorithms. The authors illustrate the concepts with many examples as well as analytical and computational exercises at the end of each chapter. This advanced, graduate-level introduction to the theory and methods of numerical analysis supplies the necessary background in numerical methods so that students can apply the techniques and understand the mathematical literature in this area. Although the book is independent of a specific computer program, MATLAB® code is available on the authors' website to illustrate various concepts.

This book provides a solid introduction to the classical and statistical theories of thermodynamics while assuming no background beyond general... physics and advanced calculus. Though an acquaintance with probability and statistics is helpful, it is not necessary. Providing a thorough, yet concise treatment of the phenomenological basis of thermal physics followed by a presentation of the statistical theory, this book presupposes no exposure to statistics or quantum mechanics. It covers several important topics, including a mathematically sound presentation of classical thermodynamics; the kinetic theory of gases including transport processes; and thorough, modern treatment of the thermodynamics of magnetism. It includes up-to-date examples of applications of the statistical theory, such as Bose-Einstein condensation, population inversions, and white dwarf stars. And, it also includes a chapter on the connection between thermodynamics and information theory. Standard International units are used throughout. An important reference book for every professional whose work requires and understanding of thermodynamics: from engineers to industrial designers.ÿ

This volume introduces the major classical Arabic philosophers through substantial selections from the key works (many of which appear in translation... for the first time here) in each of the fields -- including logic, philosophy of science, natural philosophy, metaphysics, ethics, and politics -- to which they made significant contributions. An extensive Introduction situating the works within their historical, cultural, and philosophical contexts offers support to students approaching the subject for the first time, as well as to instructors with little or no formal training in Arabic thought. A glossary, select bibliography, and index are also included.

Short fiction was an immensely innovative art in the medieval Arab world, providing the perfect vehicle for transmitting dazzling images of life and... experiences as early as pre-Islamic times. These works also speak to the urbanization of the Arab domain after Islam, mirroring the bustling life of the Muslim Arabs and Islamized Persians and reflecting the sure stamp of an urbanity that had settled very staunchly after big conquests. All the noises and voices of the Umayyads and Abbasids are here. One can taste the flavor of Abbasid food, witness the rise of slave girls and singers, and experience the pride of state. Reading these texts today illuminates the wide spectrum of early Arab life and suggests the influences and innovations that flourished so vibrantly in medieval Arab society. The only resource of its kind, Salma Khadra Jayyusi's Classical Arabic Stories selects from an impressive corpus, including excerpts from seven seminal works: Ibn Tufail's novel, Hayy ibn Yaqzan; Kalila wa Dimna by Ibn al-Muqaffa; The Misers by al-Jahiz; The Brethren of Purity's The Protest of Animals Against Man; Al-Maqamat (The Assemblies) by al-Hamadhani and al-Hariri; Epistle of Forgiveness by al-Ma'arri; and the epic romance, Sayf Bin Dhi Yazan. Jayyusi organizes her anthology thematically, beginning with a presentation of pre-Islamic tales, stories of rulers and other notables, and thrilling narratives of danger and warfare. She follows with tales of love, religion, comedy, and the strange and the supernatural. Long assumed to be the lesser achievement when compared to Arabic literature's most celebrated genre-poetry-classical Arabic fiction, under Jayyusi's careful eye, finally receives a proper debut in English, demonstrating its unparalleled contribution to the evolution of medieval literature and its sophisticated representation of Arabic culture and life.
