Moving from the blues and country music scene of East Texas in the late 1970s to the underground rock scene of the Northeast in the 1980s, Cloud Cuckoo... Land tells the story of a young female street musician's search for home -- and the unlikely place where she finds one. Miri's travels are told in a masterful first-person voice that grows from girlhood to adulthood over the course of the book: from an only child raised by her grandmother, to life on the streets sleeping in warehouses and scamming for meals, to her unlikely destiny in Philadelphia. There, as a homeless busker who owns nothing but a lovely voice, she meets Jamie, a gay man who could have studied music at Juilliard but dreamed of a life in rock and roll instead. It’s not long before Miri and Jamie are performing and living together in a unique partnership, teaching each other important lessons about music and about life. They call their duet Cloud Cuckoo Land, a sort of bird heaven, a name that describes their musical dreams and recalls the kaleidoscopic landscape of Miri’s coming of age. At turns hilarious and touching, Lisa Borders has crafted an unforgettable tale of two people, thrown together by chance, making their way together.

"...a truly great poet, one in whom the lyrical image-maker and the critical human intelligence dealing with the tragic twentieth century are utterly... fused, as they so rarely are . . . The quality of the translation is such that it is hard to remember the poems were not first written in English, even though one is always aware of Radnoti's vision as European and of his locus as Hungary."--Denise LevertovThe Hungarian Jewish poet Miklos Radnoti (1909-1944) was also a prolific translator and editor who wrote some of his greatest poems in the labor camps and copper mines of Yugoslavia before being killed by the Nazis. Leaving behind a body of work that ranks with the classics of Hungarian verse, his influence is now being felt among a younger generation. In 1946, Radnoti's body was exhumed from a mass grave by his wife who found a notebook of his poems (many of which were addressed to her) in his coat pocket.

This book is intended to provide a foundation in the grammar of classical Chinese on which the student who plans to specialize in classical studies can... build, and to give the student of modern Chinese sufficient knowledge of literary Chinese for his purposes. The material was developed over twenty years for use in the course "Introduction to Classical Chinese," as taught at Cornell University, where students of Chinese history and literature began their study of the literary language after one year of modern Chinese, and students in modern fields after two years. It is therefore assumed that the student can already pronounce Chinese words, use a system of romanization, read and write a few hundred Chinese characters, and understand simple passages of modern Chinese. The language studied in this book took shape in the latter half of the first millennium B.C. and persists as a living medium of expression today. Bernhard Karlgren has said of it: "All grammatical expedients which have been current at any time in the past, can be used promiscuously in the literature of later epochs."Texts 1-22 in Volume I constitute the core of the course. With the accompanying Exercises (also in Volume I), they provide material for about forty class sessions, thus leaving time in a normal academic year to take up a selection from Texts 23-34 and the Additional Texts A-N. (All are included in Volume I.) Most of the first twenty-two texts are from classical works of the formative period when the basic syntax was established. The remaining texts illustrate later grammatical forms and contain subject matter of considerable variety.

Comedy / Casting: 4m, 3f w/doubling / Scenery: 2 exteriors The time-shifting comedy by the author of Top Girls created a sensation Off-Broadway directed... by Tommy Tune. Here we are in 1880 darkest but British Africa as portrayed in old movies, plays and novels. Only with a difference. Both parody and spoof of the Victorian Empire and its rigid attitudes especially towards sex. There is Clive, a British functionary, his wife Betty (played by a man), their daughter Victoria (a rag doll), Clive's friend Harry an explorer, Mrs. Saunders who runs about dressed in a riding habit, Clive's son Edward who still plays with dolls and is played by a woman and Joshua a native servant who knows exactly what is really going on. What really is going on is a marvelous send up and a non-stop round robin of sexual liaisons. All this time the natives are restless in the background. The second act shifts to London in 1980 except for the surviving characters it is only twenty five years later and all those repressed sexual longings have evaporated along with the Empire. "Intelligent, inventive and funny."-The New York Times "I really don't know when I've had more fun. It blends farce, pathos into a work of total theatre."-New York Daily News

On the surface, L. S. Klatt’s poems are airy and humorous—with their tales of chickens wandering the highways of Ohio and Winnebago trailers rolling... up to heaven and whales bumping like watermelons in a bathtub—but just under the surface they turn disconcertingly serious as they celebrate the fluent word. Under the heat of inquiry, under the pressure of metaphor, the poems in Cloud of Ink liquefy, bend, and serpentine as they seek sometimes a new and sometimes an ancient destination. They present the reader with existential questions as they side-wind into the barbaric; the pear is figured as a “wild boar” and the octopus is “gutted,” yet primal energies cut a pathway to the mystical and the transcendent. The poetic cosmos Klatt creates is loquacious and beautiful, strange and affirmative, but never transparent. Amid “a maelstrom of inklings,” the writer—and the audience—must puzzle out the meaning of the syllabary.

Through interviews and biographical profiles, Cloud of Witnesses introduces us to a company of modern witnesses-peacemakers, martyrs, saints-who have... embodied the gospel challenge of our day. We meet Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker movement; Fannie Lou Hamer, champion of the freedom struggle in Mississippi; Thomas Merton, the Trappist monk and prophet of peace; and Martin Luther King, Jr. Some have endured persecution: Martin Niemoeller, the pastor who spent years as Hitler's prisoner; Jon Sobrino, who escaped the massacre of his Jesuit community in El Salvador; Brian Wilson, the peace activist whose legs were severed by a train carrying weapons to Central America.
All of them - whether from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, or the United States - give proof and inspiration that the gospel can be lived in our time.
