Our schools and colleges often make the intellectual life seem more impenetrable, narrowly specialized, and inaccessible than it is or needs to be,... argues this eminent scholar and educator, whose provocative book offers a wealth of practical suggestions for making the culture of ideas and arguments more readily understandable.Graff is reopening the door on a major debate. In the wake of theory, in the wake of feminism, post-colonial criticism and all the rest, what is a liberal arts education supposed to be about? How should teachers teach? What should students learn? Intelligently, humanely, Gerald Graff is bringing all of these questions back home to the classroom, which, at least for now, seems exactly where they belong.”Mark Edmundson, Washington Post Book World['Graff] writes with lucidity and charm. . . . A worthwhile work.”Steven Lagerfeld, Wall Street JournalClueless in Academe is charming. . . . The reader chuckles in recognition over the tales told of scholars and students.”Terence Kealey, The Times Higher Education Supplement

How do solutions develop? This question leads de Shaver to a provocation discussion of all the solution-related things that client and therapist do... during a session, which ultimately point to a task that says, "Now that you know what works, do more of it." Once therapist and client are focused on investigating solutions rather than problems, therapy inevitably becomes brief-sometimes only one session.

The Nicene Creed's powerful summary of Christian faith has stood the test of time, embodying core truths and distinguishing essential Christian... teachings from those of lesser importance. As respected thinker and educator David Willis explores the Nicene Creed in this new book, he provides clues for meaningfully interpreting this most ecumenical of church creeds in the twenty-first century. / Writing especially for educated laypeople, advanced students, and theological educators, Willis eloquently links the ancient creed to life today. As he points out, faith is constantly taking different shapes within broad boundaries like the creed's perennial truths, and even these truths need to be reinterpreted in each age to keep them intelligible and compelling. Willis admirably achieves this task for our day by elucidating the creed's statement of faith with analogies drawn from such diverse areas as architecture, graphic art, poetry, sculpture, and psychological theory. / Those seeking to delve into the creed or to deepen a lifelong encounter with it will be enriched by Willis's reflections.

Clybourne park had its UK premiere at the Royal Court Theatre, London. Set in Chicago, the play "applies a modern twist to the issues of race and... housing and aspirations for a better life." It is loosely based on real events. The first act depicts the racial atmosphere in Chicago in 1959. The second act is set in 2009 in the same house where a white couple wants to move into the now-gentrifying black neighborhood. The premise is gentrification, but Norris bares much more. He peels away layers of propriety with acuity, subtlety, and boldness.
