The U.S. healthcare system is in critical condition--but this should come as a surprise to no one. Yet until now the solutions proposed have been... unworkable, pie-in-the-sky plans that have had little chance of becoming law and even less of succeeding. In Code Red, David Dranove, one of the nation's leading experts on the economics of healthcare, proposes a set of feasible solutions that address access, efficiency, and quality. Dranove offers pragmatic remedies, some of them controversial, all of them crucially needed to restore the system to vitality. He pays special attention to the plight of the uninsured, and proposes a new direction that promises to make premier healthcare for all Americans a national reality. Setting his story against the backdrop of healthcare in the United States from the early twentieth century to the present day, he reveals why a century of private and public sector efforts to reform the ailing system have largely failed. He draws on insights from economics to diagnose the root causes of rising costs and diminishing access to quality care, such as inadequate information, perverse incentives, and malfunctioning insurance markets. Dranove describes the ongoing efforts to revive the system--including the rise of consumerism, the quality movement, and initiatives to expand access--and argues that these efforts are doomed to fail without more fundamental, systemic, market-based reforms. Code Red lays the foundation for a thriving healthcare system and is indispensable for anyone trying to make sense of the thorny issues of healthcare reform.

This book is an integrated introduction to the mathematics of coding, that is, replacing information expressed in symbols, such as a natural language or... a sequence of bits, by another message using (possibly) different symbols. There are three main reasons for doing this: economy, reliability, and security, and each is covered in detail. Only a modest mathematical background is assumed, the mathematical theory being introduced at a level that enables the basic problems to be stated carefully, but without unnecessary abstraction. Other features include: clear and careful exposition of fundamental concepts, including optimal coding, data compression, and public-key cryptography; concise but complete proofs of results; coverage of recent advances of practical interest, for example in encryption standards, authentication schemes, and elliptic curve cryptography; numerous examples and exercises, and a full solutions manual available to lecturers from www.springer.com.

The financial industry's invention of complex products such as credit default swaps and other derivatives has been widely blamed for triggering the... global financial crisis of 2008. Codes of Finance takes readers behind the scenes of the equity derivatives business at one of the world's leading investment banks before the crisis, providing a detailed firsthand account of the creation, marketing, selling, accounting, and management of these financial instruments--and of how they ultimately created havoc inside and outside the bank. Vincent Antonin Lépinay, a former employee of the bank, investigates the journey of a derivative through the bank's front, middle, and back offices. In the process, he provides a rare look at the strange world of quants, traders, salespeople, accountants, and others involved in a self-annihilating form of life in which securities designed by the bank eventually threaten its infrastructure. Throughout, he tries to understand the baffling languages of engineered financial products and the often-conflicting bodies of expertise that are mobilized to create them. Codes of Finance highlights the massive costs of investment banking's hubristic dream of manufacturing global financial services that derive their value from multiple economies across the world. Yet the book challenges simplistic condemnations of financial engineering by showing that derivation is the central operator of economic life--stretching far beyond the phenomenon of financial derivatives themselves. Essential reading for economic sociologists and financial economists, as well as for readers curious to decipher modern finance, this is the first serious study of the intellectual and organizational puzzles raised by the controversial products of contemporary financial engineering.

Codes, Regulations, and Standards in Interior Design shows interior design students and practitioners how to make the incorporation of code... requirements an integral part of their design process. The text develops a clear understanding of the reasons for, the history of, the meaning and application of, and the enforcement of applicable codes, regulations, and standards to real problems in Interior Design. Hurt instills in students that codes, regulations, and standards are not "necessary evils", but are there to assist them as designers in understanding and applying the principles of life safety and property protection, both of which are important and integral goals in any design project. The text covers the most current reference documents available today—primarily the 2009 series of model codes from the International Code Council.

It is quite commonplace for bilingual speakers to use two or more languages, dialects or varieties in the same conversation, without any apparent... effort. The phenomenon, known as code-switching, has become a major focus of attention in linguistics. This concise and original study explores how, when and where code-switching occurs. Drawing on a diverse range of examples from medieval manuscripts to rap music, novels to advertisements, emails to political speeches, and above all everyday conversation, it argues that code-switching can only be properly understood if we study it from a variety of perspectives. It shows how sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, grammatical and developmental aspects of code-switching are all interdependent, and findings in each area are crucial to others. Breaking down barriers across the discipline of linguistics, this pioneering book confronts fundamental questions about what a 'native language' is, and whether languages can be meaningfully studied outside of the individuals who use them.

"In Code-Switching Lessons, we show you how to lay down the red pen and use successful strategies-contrastive analysis and code-switching-for teaching... Standard English in linguistically diverse classrooms."-Rebecca Wheeler & Rachel Swords Our kids bring to school powerful linguistic know-how-the cadences, rhythms, and language patterns of their homes and communities. Code-Switching Lessons shows teachers how to build on students' existing knowledge (Community English) to add new knowledge (Academic English).Teacher educator Rebecca Wheeler and urban educator Rachel Swords show how to lead students in discovery learning of grammar. Through contrastive analysis students gain explicit awareness of the contrasts between informal and formal English. From there, Rebecca and Rachel show how to lead students to code-switch-to choose the language style to fit the setting-the time, place, audience, and communicative purpose. In this way, teachers learn to build on students' linguistic strengths and add Standard English to students' linguistic toolkits. Code-Switching Lessons components:- 9 grammar units that fit naturally into your writing block form the core of the lesson book. Each unit contains two to four lessons that lead students to explore informal and formal grammar patterns in search of generalizations, comparisons, and contrasts. Following a scientific method of grammar inquiry, lessons move students from defining and classifying the grammar patterns to practicing and applying the pattern in their own writing.- An accompanying CD-ROM provides video and print resources to support your teaching. This electronic resource also provides answers to frequently asked questions and an extensive list of vernacular English patterns often found in school writing. While showing teachers how to identify and successfully respond to the top 9 grammar patterns common among students who speak African American Vernacular English (AAVE), these code-switching strategies extend to students speaking diverse dialects of US English (Appalachian, Southern, etc), International English (Australian English, Hong Kong English, British English), and to students who are English Language Learners (ELL). Listen to a podcast of Rebecca Wheeler and David Brown as they discuss what code-switching is with illustrations from literature and student work.

When African American students write or say "Mama jeep is out of gas" or "The Earth revolve around the sun," many teachers--labeling this usage poor... English or bad grammar--assume that their students have problems with possession or don't know how to make subjects and verbs agree.Forty years of linguistic research, however, demonstrates that the student is not making errors in Standard English--the child is writing or speaking correctly in the language patterns of the home and of the community. Building on the linguistic knowledge that children bring to school becomes the focus of this book, which advocates the use of "code-switching" to enable students to add another linguistic code--Standard English--to their linguistic toolbox.Rather than drill the idea of "Standard English" into students by labeling their home language as "wrong," the authors recommend teaching students to recognize the grammatical differences between home speech and school speech so that they are then able to choose the language style most appropriate to the time, place, audience, and communicative purpose.University researcher Rebecca Wheeler and urban elementary teacher Rachel Swords offer a practical, hands-on guide to code-switching, providing teachers with step-by-step instructions and numerous code-switching charts that can be reproduced for classroom use. The success of Wheeler's presentations in urban school districts and the positive results that Swords has observed in her own classroom speak to the effectiveness of the research and of this approach. While the book focuses on language use in the elementary classroom, the procedures and materials introduced can be easily adapted for middle and high school students.
