Riots, revolution, terrorism, genocide, and other forms of collective violence have shaped the historical landscape and remain an important feature of... modern life. Now in its second edition, Collective Violence examines the sources, dynamics, and consequences of this violence in the world today and in centuries past. Its overriding view is that collective violence is a largely rational attempt to advance or resist social and political change. Although this type of violence easily arouses strong opinions and is difficult to discuss objectively, Collective Violence provides a balanced perspective grounded in the fields of history, political science, psychology, and sociology. This second edition has been completely updated with new material covering the post-9/11 world and the latest research on the many forms of collective violence. It now includes three chapters on cults; hate groups, ethnic conflict, and genocide; and gangs, survivalists, and militias to replace the one chapter that covered all these topics in the first edition. These new chapters provide a more comprehensive picture of groups and behaviors that remain poorly understood by the general public. Written to and for students in clear and engaging language, Collective Violence is appropriate as a core text or supplement for courses on collective violence, social movements, and social conflict commonly found in departments of criminology and criminal justice, history, justice studies, political science, and sociology.

Extreme forms of collective violence - such as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes - can endanger international peace and security. The... international criminal justice system has been set up in order to prosecute these crimes and thus to restore international peace and security. These crimes are, however, extremely complex social phenomena and it takes an inter- and multidisciplinary approach to understand the true nature of this type of criminality and to effectively prosecute the perpetrators thereof. This book enhances our knowledge of these complex phenomena and thus contributes to a better and more effective system of international criminal justice. Scholars from many different scientific disciplines - such as law, criminology, political science, psychology, research methodology, and information technology - as well as practitioners from within the field, have contributed to this book. General themes include: What kind of people are perpetrators of collective violence? How can we attribute criminal responsibility to individuals for crimes which are collective in nature? How can we study these crimes and how can we discover patterns of violence? What role can statistics play when holding individuals accountable? How do we develop strategies of prosecution? What difficulties do prosecutors and judges face? How important and useful is the International Criminal Court Case Matrix? These are just a few of the many questions addressed in the book.
