This text is designed for an in-depth course in trigonometry. Although the development of trigonometry begins on page one, the authors realize that many... students may have completed algebra and geometry courses some time ago. Therefore, they have included algebra and geometry reminders throughout the text where they know from their teaching experience that many students need help in recalling ideas that are necessary to develop trigonometry. While it assumes no previous knowledge of trigonometry, this book shows how trigonometry can be used in many fields. It also develops algebra skills so that students will be thoroughly prepared to continue their study of mathematics and science. The use of graphing calculators has been incorporated throughout the text to reduce the labor of calculations and to expand the students' understanding of concepts and give students the opportunity to explore relationships. A Student Solutions Manual is available for sale. Additionally, an Instructor Solutions Manual is available for teachers by emailing shirley_grall@mcgraw-hill.com

Three components contribute to a theme sustained throughout the Coburn Series: that of laying a firm foundation, building a solid framework, and... providing strong connections. Not only does Coburn present a sound problem-solving process to teach students to recognize a problem, organize a procedure, and formulate a solution, the text encourages students to see beyond procedures in an effort to gain a greater understanding of the big ideas behind mathematical concepts. Written in a readable, yet mathematically mature manner appropriate for college algebra level students, Coburn’s College Algebra uses narrative, extensive examples, and a range of exercises to connect seemingly disparate mathematical topics into a cohesive whole. Coburn’s hallmark applications are born out of the author’s extensive experiences in and outside the classroom, and appeal to the vast diversity of students and teaching methods in this course area. Benefiting from the feedback of hundreds of instructors and students across the country, College Algebra second edition, continues to emphasize connections in order to improve the level of student engagement in mathematics and increase their chances of success in college algebra.

The Barnett/Ziegler/Byleen/Sobecki College Algebra series is designed to give students a solid grounding in pre-calculus topics in a user-friendly... manner. The series emphasizes computational skills, ideas, and problem solving rather than theory. Explore/Discuss boxes integrated throughout each text encourage students to think critically about mathematical concepts. All worked examples are followed by Matched Problems that reinforce the concepts being taught. New to these editions, Technology Connections illustrate how concepts that were previously explained in an algebraic context may also be solved using a graphing calculator. Students are always shown the underlying algebraic methods first so that they do not become calculator-dependent. In addition, each text in the series contains an abundance of exercises - including numerous calculator-based and reasoning and writing exercises - and a wide variety of real-world applications illustrating how math is useful.

Completely revised and up-to-date with MyPlate, Healthy People 2020 and Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, Contemporary Nutrition: A Functional... Approach is an alternate version of Wardlaw-Smith's Contemporary Nutrition, 9e. While Contemporary Nutrition: A Functional Approach shares the recognized strengths of the ninth edition, it offers a unique approach to the coverage of vitamins and minerals. It departs from a traditional presentation by instead organizing vitamins and minerals within the context of physiological functions and the health conditions they influence. The text will provide students who lack a strong science background the ideal balance of reliable nutrition information and practical consumer-oriented knowledge. With their friendly writing style, the authors act as the student's personal guide to dispelling common misconceptions and to gaining a solid foundation for making informed nutrition choices.

Instructors consistently ask for a human biology textbook that helps students develop an understanding of the main themes of biology while placing... the material in the context of the human body. Mader Human Biology was developed to fill this void. Organized around the main themes of biology, Human Biology guides students to think conceptually about biology and the world around them. Just as the levels of biological organization flow from one level to the next, themes and topics of Biology are tied to one another throughout the chapter, and between the chapters and parts through the concept of homeostasis. Combined with Dr. Mader’s hallmark writing style, exceptional art program, and pedagogical framework, difficult concepts become easier to understand and visualize, allowing students to focus on understanding how the concepts are related. Multimedia Integration: Michael Windelspecht represents the new generation of digital authors. Through the integration of multimedia resources, such as videos, animations and MP3 files, and in the design of a new series of interactive animations, Dr Windelspecht has worked to bring Dr. Mader’s texts to the new generation of digital learners. A veteran of the online, hybrid, and traditional teaching environments, Dr. Windelspecht is well versed in the challenges facing today’s students and educators. Dr. Windelspecht has also acted as the subject matter expert on all aspects of the Connect content being prepared for the Mader series of textbooks. The laboratory exercise in this manual are coordinated with Human Biology, a general biology text that covers the entire field of biology. The text emphasizes how we can apply biological knowledge to our own lives and to our relationships with other organisms.

“What any body is—and is able to do—cannot be disentangled from the media we use to consume and produce texts.” ---from the... Introduction.Kristin Arola and Anne Wysocki argue that composing in new media is composing the body—is embodiment. In Composing (Media) = Composing (Embodiment), they have brought together a powerful set of essays that agree on the need for compositionists—and their students—to engage with a wide range of new media texts. These chapters explore how texts of all varieties mediate and thereby contribute to the human experiences of communication, of self, the body, and composing. Sample assignments and activities exemplify how this exploration might proceed in the writing classroom.Contributors here articulate ways to understand how writing enables the experience of our bodies as selves, and at the same time to see the work of (our) writing in mediating selves to make them accessible to institutional perceptions and constraints. These writers argue that what a body does, and can do, cannot be disentangled from the media we use, nor from the times and cultures and technologies with which we engage. To the discipline of composition, this is an important discussion because it clarifies the impact/s of literacy on citizens, freedoms, and societies. To the classroom, it is important because it helps compositionists to support their students as they enact, learn, and reflect upon their own embodied and embodying writing.

The Miller/O'Neill/Hyde author team continues to offer an enlightened approach grounded in the fundamentals of classroom experience in Intermediate... Algebra 3e. The practice of many instructors in the classroom is to present examples and have their students solve similar problems. This is realized through the Skill Practice Exercises that directly follow the examples in the textbook. Throughout the text, the authors have integrated many Study Tips and Avoiding Mistakes hints, which are reflective of the comments and instruction presented to students in the classroom. In this way, the text communicates to students the very points their instructors are likely to make during lecture, and this helps to reinforce the concepts and provide instruction that leads students to mastery and success. The authors included in this edition Problem-Recognition Exercises, that many instructors will likely identify to be similar to worksheets they have personally developed for distribution to students. The intent of the Problem-Recognition exercises is to help students overcome what is sometimes a natural inclination toward applying problem-solving algorithms that may not always be appropriate. In addition, the exercise sets have been revised to include even more core exercises than were present in the previous edition. This permits instructors to choose from a wealth of problems, allowing ample opportunity for students to practice what they learn in lecture to hone their skills and develop the knowledge they need to make a successful transition into College Algebra. In this way, the book perfectly complements any learning platform, whether traditional lecture or distance-learning; its instruction is so reflective of what comes from lecture, that students will feel as comfortable outside of class as they do inside class with their instructor. For even more support, students have access to a wealth of supplements, including McGraw-Hill’s online homework management system, MathZone.
