For a quarter century, this casebook has been the staple of Complex Litigation courses. It covers a wide variety of cases : civil rights, mass torts,... securities and provides a strong foundation for handling any type of complex case. While retaining the book's familiar coverage, the Fifth Edition offers expanded treatment of Multidistrict Litigation, new material on the Class Action Fairness Act, and a new section on litigating class certification. The authors have created a new chapter on Settling Complex Cases, allowing students to understand the special issues that arise in class action settlements and in non-class aggregate settlements. Materials on discovery and judicial management have been streamlined and updated.

This complex litigation casebook focuses on complex cases brought by lawyers seeking to promote social reform. A significant portion of the book is... devoted to so-called impact class actions, which are designed to have an "impact" and bring forth social change. At the same time, this casebook will also cover the more traditional topics found in other complex litigation casebooks, particularly the mass tort class action. Cases seeking to promote social change often have taken complex forms. Brown v. Board of Education, 347 U.S. 483 (1954) as well as its precursors, for example, relied on the class action device in an attempt to desegregate the public schools and, more generally, to dismantle Jim Crow in the United States. Advocates for years have brought civil rights, employment discrimination, prison reform, securities fraud, public benefits, housing, environmental, immigration, and other class actions in efforts to reform public institutions and bring forth changes in policies and practices. Class action litigation seeks to transform the tobacco industry, as well as address the epidemic of tobacco-related disease in the United States.

This volume serves as an introduction to the Kodaira-Spencer theory of deformations of complex structures. Based on notes taken by James Morrow from... lectures given by Kunihiko Kodaira at Stanford University in 1965-1966, the book gives the original proof of the Kodaira embedding theorem, showing that the restricted class of Kähler manifolds called Hodge manifolds is algebraic. Included are the semicontinuity theorems and the local completeness theorem of Kuranishi. Readers are assumed to know some algebraic topology. Complete references are given for the results that are used from elliptic partial differential equations. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in abstract complex manifolds.

The purpose of this book is to demonstrate that complex numbers and geometry can be blended together beautifully. This results in easy proofs and... natural generalizations of many theorems in plane geometry, such as the Napoleon theorem, the Ptolemy-Euler theorem, the Simson theorem, and the Morley theorem. The book is self-contained - no background in complex numbers is assumed - and can be covered at a leisurely pace in a one-semester course. Many of the chapters can be read independently. Over 100 exercises are included. The book would be suitable as a text for a geometry course, or for a problem solving seminar, or as enrichment for the student who wants to know more.

This classic in organizational theory provides a succinct overview of the principal schools of thought as it presents a critical, sociopsychological,... and historical orientation to the field of organizational analysis. Vividly written, with theories made concrete by specific, student-oriented examples, it takes a critical view toward organizations, analyzing their impact on individuals, groups, and society as a whole. New chapters on economic theories of organization and the conditional power theory are among the features of this revised edition.

A complete guide to carrying out complex survey analysis using RAs survey analysis continues to serve as a core component of sociological research,... researchers are increasingly relying upon data gathered from complex surveys to carry out traditional analyses. Complex Surveys is a practical guide to the analysis of this kind of data using R, the freely available and downloadable statistical programming language. As creator of the specific survey package for R, the author provides the ultimate presentation of how to successfully use the software for analyzing data from complex surveys while also utilizing the most current data from health and social sciences studies to demonstrate the application of survey research methods in these fields. The book begins with coverage of basic tools and topics within survey analysis such as simple and stratified sampling, cluster sampling, linear regression, and categorical data regression. Subsequent chapters delve into more technical aspects of complex survey analysis, including post-stratification, two-phase sampling, missing data, and causal inference. Throughout the book, an emphasis is placed on graphics, regression modeling, and two-phase designs. In addition, the author supplies a unique discussion of epidemiological two-phase designs as well as probability-weighting for causal inference. All of the book's examples and figures are generated using R, and a related Web site provides the R code that allows readers to reproduce the presented content. Each chapter concludes with exercises that vary in level of complexity, and detailed appendices outline additional mathematical and computational descriptions to assist readers with comparing results from various software systems.Complex Surveys is an excellent book for courses on sampling and complex surveys at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also a practical reference guide for applied statisticians and practitioners in the social and health sciences who use statistics in their everyday work.

"Complex Variables and Applications, 8E" will serve, just as the earlier editions did, as a textbook for an introductory course in the theory and... application of functions of a complex variable. This new edition preserves the basic content and style of the earlier editions. The text is designed to develop the theory that is prominent in applications of the subject. You will find a special emphasis given to the application of residues and conformal mappings. To accommodate the different calculus backgrounds of students, footnotes are given with references to other texts that contain proofs and discussions of the more delicate results in advanced calculus. Improvements in the text include extended explanations of theorems, greater detail in arguments, and the separation of topics into their own sections.

An understanding of functions of a complex variable, together with the importance of their applications, form an essential part of the study of... mathematics. Complex Variables and their Applications assumes as little background knowledge of the reader as is practically possible, a sound knowledge of calculus and basic real analysis being the only essential pre-requisites. With an emphasis on clear and careful explanation, the book covers all the essential topics covered in a first course on Complex Variables, such as differentiation, integration and applications, Laurent series, residue theory and applications, and elementary conformal mappings. The reader is also introduced to the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation, Dirchlet problems, harmonic functions, analytic continuation, infinite products, asymptotic series and elliptic functions. Applications of complex variable theory to linear ordinary differential equations and integral transforms are also included. Complex Variables and their Applications is an ideal textbook and resource for second and final year students of mathematics, engineering and physics.
