In Activists beyond Borders, Margaret E. Keck and Kathryn Sikkink examine a type of pressure group that has been largely ignored by political analysts:... networks of activists that coalesce and operate across national frontiers. Their targets may be international organizations or the policies of particular states. Historical examples of such transborder alliances include anti-slavery and woman suffrage campaigns. In the past two decades, transnational activism has had a significant impact in human rights, especially in Latin America, and advocacy networks have strongly influenced environmental politics as well. The authors also examine the emergence of an international campaign around violence against women.

Can scholars generate knowledge production and pedagogy that bolster local and global forms of resistance to U.S. imperialism, racial/gender oppression,... and the economic violence of capitalist globalization? This book explores what happens when scholars create active engagements between the academy and communities of resistance. In so doing, it suggests a new direction for antiracist and feminist scholarship, rejecting models of academic radicalism that remain unaccountable to grassroots social movements and exploring the community and the academy as interlinked sites of struggle. The chapters are authored by leading scholars from the U.S., Canada, India, Japan, and the UK who are involved in feminist, antiracist, indigenous sovereignty, transgender liberation, antiglobalization, antimilitary, and antiprison movements. They provide models and the opportunity for critical reflection for students and faculty as they struggle to align their commitments to social justice with their roles in the academy. At the same time, they explore the tensions and challenges of engaging in such contested work.

One wonders if there is any academic field that doesn’t suffer from the way it is portrayed by the media, by politicians, by pundits and other... publics. How well scholars in a discipline articulate their own definition can influence not only issues of image but the very success of the discipline in serving students and its other constituencies. The Activist WPA is an effort to address this range of issues for the field of English composition in the age of the Spellings Commission and the No Child Left Behind Act. Drawing on recent developments in framing theory and the resurgent traditions of progressive organizers, Linda Adler-Kassner calls upon composition teachers and administrators to develop strategic programs of collective action that do justice to composition’s best principles. Adler-Kassner argues that the “story” of college composition can be changed only when writing scholars bring the wonders down, to articulate a theory framework that is pragmatic and intelligible to those outside the field--and then create messages that reference that framework. In The Activist WPA, she makes a case for developing a more integrated vision of outreach, English education, and writing program administration.

Revised edition of the invaluable guidebook for developing interest, meaning, and true understanding in the classroom! According to Piaget, all... higher-order thinking skills have their bases in activities involving concrete manipulation and observation. The third edition of this highly regarded collection of social studies activities, now with new contributing author Mary Margaret Wogan, continues to be based on the premise that children learn best through experiences and activities learning by doing. It features new activities for each social studies category (geography, history, anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, and interdisciplinary). Three important additions to the key elements of the easy-to-follow activity format make it easier for instructors to meet standards-based curriculum requirements: - A detailed treatment of National Council of Social Studies standards addressed - Specific multiple intelligences addressed (This concept is reinforced by a new multiple intelligences section in the back of the book) - Useful Web site(s) for group/individual research (URLs for sites that will expand or enrich the learning experience for the activity) By engaging pupils in meaningful, worthwhile social studies activities, instructors can emphasize the processes of learning rather than the products, resulting in a richly rewarding experience for pupils and teacher alike. Filled with over 100 inquiry-based activities, Activities for Mathematical Thinking addresses the changing ways in which students learn and teachers... teach mathematics. The emphasis is on hands-on learning and an inductive, rather than deductive, approach to mathematics. Organized in 11 sections, activities range from understanding number systems to developing geometric thinking to exploring part-whole relationships. While diverse in content and complexity, all activities emphasize inquiry and process and include recommended grade levels as well as NCTM process and content standards. Worksheets and handouts are provided in the back of the workbook to help support many of the activities. FEATURES: Explore-Invent-Discover strategies-Structures and guides mathematics investigations. Engaging student questions-Set a context and help focus the inquiry process. Exploration of hands-on methods and manipulatives-Lets students model and visualize mathematical situations and experience them directly. Printable and customizable forms, manipulatives, and worksheets outlined in activities are easily accessible on the Activity CD-ROM in the back of every copy of the text. Problem-solving strategies. Each activity includes recommended grade levels and NCTM process and content standards. Descriptions of what teachers and students will do to prompt the learning process-Followed by discussions of approaches students might take toward understanding or solving problems.

In this book, Bell Hooks, one of America's leading black intellectuals, shares her philosophy of the classroom, offering ideas about teaching that... fundamentally rethink democratic participation. Hooks advocates the process of teaching students to think critically and raises many concerns central to the field of critical pedagogy, linking them to feminist thought. In the process, these essays face squarely the problems of teachers who do not want to teach, of students who do not want to learn, of racism and sexism in the classroom, and of the gift of freedom that is, for Hooks, the teacher's most important goal.

Activities for Teaching Science as Inquiry includes over 100 activities to cover essential concepts in physical, life, and earth strands. Background... information is provided for teachers as well as ways to motivate learners and help them apply what they learn. Every activity follows the 5-E Model (Engaging, Exploring, Explaining, Elaborating, and Evaluating,) and is sequenced to develop science concepts in a developmentally appropriate way for grades K-8. The 5-E model is a Learning Cycle Model that reflects the NSES Science as Inquiry Standards. The inclusion of the NSES standards provides a comprehensive view of how the NSES Science Content Standards can be used to organize curriculum and inform instruction in elementary and middle school science. A series of activities are also included to meet the needs of students with exceptionalities. The book is organized into four sections: 1. Teaching Inquiry Science Activities 2. Physical Science Activities 3. Life Science Activities 4. Earth and Space Science Activities The appendices include information on safety, measuring, where to buy supplies, science periodicals, professional societies, and contemporary elementary science projects and programs.
