Originally published in 1977, and reprinted several times since, this text provides an account of the profound impact that white settlement had on... Native-European relations in British Columbia after the fur trade ended. Robin Fisher argues that the fur trade had a limited effect on the cultures of Native people. Both Natives and Europeans were involved in a mutually beneficial economic system, and there was no incentive for non-Native fur traders to alter radically the Native social system. With the passing of the fur trade in 1858, however, and the beginning of white settlement, what had been a reciprocal system between the two civilizations became a pattern of white dominance. The second edition includes a preface in which the author re-examines his original arguments, surveys the literature since 1977, and comments on directions for new research. The original edition of the book was published at a time when there was relatively little written by historians on the subject.

In most forms of dancing, performers carry out their steps with a distance that keeps them from colliding with each other. Dancer Steve Paxton in the... 1970s considered this distance a territory for investigation. His study of intentional contact resulted in a public performance in 1972 in a Soho gallery, and the name “contact improvisation” was coined for the form of unrehearsed dance he introduced. Rather than copyrighting it, Paxton allowed it to evolve and spread. In this book the author draws upon her own experience and research to explain the art of contact improvisation, in which dance partners propel movement by physical contact. They roll, fall, spiral, leap, and slip along the contours and momentum of moving bodies. The text begins with a history, then describes the elements that define this form of dance. Subsequent chapters explore how contact improvisation relates to self and identity; how class, race, gender, culture and physiology influence dance; how dance promotes connection in a culture of isolation; and how it relates to the concept of community. The final chapter is a collection of exercises explained in the words of teachers from across the United States and abroad. Appendix A describes how to set up and maintain a weekly jam; Appendix B details recommended reading, videos and Web sites.

Books about contact improvisation are hard to find and it is even more difficult to find books containing specific exercises, instructions and ideas on... how to lead a Contact Improvisation workshop. Each Contact-teacher has his or her own area of interest--a complete survey has not yet been published in spite of growing public awareness. This book gives practical examples and ideas which have been tried and tested in the author's own Contact improvisation workshops. There are a lot of exercises and suggestions to help teach Contact improvisation classes.

Even with the advances in intraocular lens technology and the growing diversity of refractive surgery techniques, the role of contact lenses in... ophthalmic practice has only increased. This is due in part to the great strides in materials, technology, expanding applications (both refractive and therapeutic) for contact lenses, and the clear recognition that contact lenses will always be an important tool for the ophthalmologist. With the fitting of contact lenses as a medical art, requiring a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology and optics of the eye, this practice is formulaic only in part. The rest of contact lens practice requires sound medical judgment and decision- making that comes only with "hands-on" experience. The authors address this need by starting with a didactic approach that incorporates frequently-asked questions and straightforward answers so that the ophthalmology resident, intermediate contact lens practitioner, and optometrist will find this to be an indispensable resource.

This treatise is concerned with the stresses and deformation of solid bodies in contact with each other, along curved surfaces which touch initially at... a point or along a line. Examples are a railway wheel and rail, or a pair of gear wheel teeth. Professor Johnson first reviews the development of the theory of contact stresses since the problem was originally addressed by H. Hertz in 1882. Next he discusses the influence of friction and the topographical roughness of surfaces, and this is incorporated into the theory of contact mechanics. An important feature is the treatment of bodies which deform plastically or viscoelastically. In addition to stationary contact, an appreciable section of the book is concerned with bodies which are in sliding or rolling contact, or which collide.

The eleven essays in this volume probe multicultural interactions between Indians, Europeans, and Africans in eastern North America's frontier zones... from the late colonial era to the end of the early republic. Focusing on contact points between these groups, they construct frontiers as creative arenas that produced new forms of social and political organization.Contributors to the volume offer fresh perspectives on a succession of frontier encounters from the era of the Seven Years' War in Pennsylvania, New York, and South Carolina to the Revolutionary period in the Ohio Valley to the Mississippi basin in the early national era. Drawing on ethnography, cultural and literary criticism, border studies, gender theory, and African American studies, they open new ways of looking at intercultural contact in creating American identities. Collectively, the essays in Contact Points challenge ideas of either acculturation or conquest, highlighting instead the complexity of various frontiers while demonstrating their formative influence in American history. The contributors are Stephen Aron, Andrew R. L. Cayton, Gregory E. Dowd, John Mack Faragher, William B. Hart, Jill Lepore, James H. Merrell, Jane T. Merritt, Lucy Eldersveld Murphy, Elizabeth A. Perkins, Claudio Saunt, and Fredrika J. Teute.
