Burke challenges the current thesis that companies should act responsibly toward communities and societies. Instead, he shows that changes in society... mandate that companies must develop strategies and programs that foster a reputation of trust in local communities in order that they preserve their license to operate. Burke describes strategies and programs of action that enable companies to develop trust and thus maintain their license to operate. He also describes ways to use philanthropy and volunteer programs to achieve a competitive advantage. The public environment in which companies operate has changed significantly since the 1970s. Communities, in response to elected officials and community groups, are demanding that companies observe new norms of behavior. They expect companies to respect the environment, respond to the concerns of the community residents, and contribute to the support of community institutions. As Burke illustrates, a company's community reputation also affects the behavior of consumers and employees. Consumers prefer to buy products from companies that are involved in the community. Employees are attracted to companies that have a good community reputation.Just as successful companies need to be a supplier of choice, an employer of choice, and an investor of choice, they now have to become a neighbor of choice. They have to behave in ways that build a legacy of trust in order to be positioned positively in the community. As Burke shows, to be a neighbor of choice, a company has to pursue three strategies: build sustainable and ongoing relationships with key community individuals, groups, and organizations; institute procedures that anticipate and respond to community expectations, concerns, needs, and issues; and focus the company's community programs on ways that promote and strengthen the community's quality of life and which also support the business goals of the company. The strategies developed by Burke will be of great use to community and public affairs managers and general managers of corporations as well as CEOs and other executive officers. Students in courses on corporate strategy and general management will find the book of value, as will students in courses on non-profit management.

In exploring the criminalization of corporations, this book uses the landmark "Ford Pinto case" as a centerpiece for exploring corporate violence and... the long effort to bring such harm within the reach of the criminal law. Corporations that illegally endanger human life now must negotiate the surveillance of government regulators and risk civil suits from injured parties seeking financial compensation. They also may be charged with criminal offenses and their officials sent to prison.A revised version of the first edition, titled Corporate Crime Under Attack: The Ford Pinto Case and Beyond -- an endeavor prompted in part by the Ford Pinto case's twenty-fifth anniversary and the corresponding recognition of the continuing significance of the issues this prosecution raised and of the important developments that have transpired in the intervening years. In addition to the new, more descriptive subtitle, the book has been substantially remodeled and new sections added.

No subject is more important to the success of today's business organization than Corporate Culture. After so many years of failed fads and fix-its,... such as business-process reengineering, outsourcing, downsizing, flawed go-for-growth strategies, and outrageous cases of corporate lawlessness, Dr. Jerry Want brings clarity and direction to the one subject that is most critical to the success and very survival of today's corporation- corporate culture. Corporate Culture: Illuminating the Black Hole is the definitive source of knowledge for understanding and building the new type of business culture that is required in this age of radical business change. Through dozens of real-life examples drawn from his many years of consulting and corporate experience, and unique tools such as the proprietary Hierarchy of Corporate cultures ranging from Predatory through Bureaucratic to high-performing New Age cultures, Dr. Want shows concretely and clearly how a company's culture permeates everything it does, and how to revitalize the culture in order to grow and perform to maximum capability. Case studies show how corporate culture has contributed to the success of such companies as Nucor, Harley-Davidson, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, and Cisco Systems, among others. The book also examines how flawed corporate cultures have contributed to the failure or near failure of former industry leaders such as SmithKline, Motorola, Arthur Andersen, Xerox, and Polaroid, among others.

Business experts everywhere have been finding that corporations run not only on numbers, but on culture. In this revised and updated 2000 edition of... Corporate Cultures, organization consultants Terrence Deal and Allan Kennedy probe the conference rooms and corridors of corporate America to discover the key to business excellence. They find that the health of the bottom line is not ultimately guaranteed by attention to the rational aspects of managing-financial planning, personnel policies, cost controls, and the like. What's more important to long-term prosperity is the company's culture-the inner values, rites, rituals, and heroes-that strongly influence its success, from top management to the secretarial pool. For junior and senior managers alike, Deal and Kennedy offer explicit guidelines for diagnosing the state of one's own corporate culture and for using the power of culture to wield significant influence on how business gets done.

Corporate Finance, by Ross, Westerfield, and Jaffe emphasizes the modern fundamentals of the theory of finance, while providing contemporary examples to... make the theory come to life. The authors aim to present corporate finance as the working of a small number of integrated and powerful intuitions, rather than a collection of unrelated topics. They develop the central concepts of modern finance: arbitrage, net present value, efficient markets, agency theory, options, and the trade-off between risk and return, and use them to explain corporate finance with a balance of theory and application. The well-respected author team is known for their clear, accessible presentation of material that makes this text an excellent teaching tool. The ninth edition has been fully updated to reflect the recent financial crisis and is now accompanied by Connect, an exciting new homework management system.
