This book covers recent developments in correlated data analysis. It utilizes the class of dispersion models as marginal components in the formulation... of joint models for correlated data. This enables the book to cover a broader range of data types than the traditional generalized linear models. The reader is provided with a systematic treatment for the topic of estimating functions, and both generalized estimating equations (GEE) and quadratic inference functions (QIF) are studied as special cases. In addition to the discussions on marginal models and mixed-effects models, this book covers new topics on joint regression analysis based on Gaussian copulas.

"This book provides one of the clearest treatments of correlations and regression of any statistics book I have seen. . . . Bobko has achieved his... objective of making the topics of correlation and regression accessible to students. . . . For someone looking for a very clearly written treatment of applied correlation and regression, this book would be an excellent choice." --Paul E. Spector, University of South Florida "As a quantitative methods instructor, I have reviewed and used many statistical textbooks. This textbook and approach is one of the very best when it comes to user-friendliness, approachability, clarity, and practical utility." --Steven G. Rogelberg, Bowling Green State University

Correlations, in general, and the Pearson product-moment correlation in particular, can be used for many research purposes, ranging from describing a... relationship between two variables as a descriptive statistic to examining a relationship between two variables in a population as an inferential statistic, or to gauge the strength of an effect, or to conduct a meta-analytic study. How can correlation be more effectively used so that one doesn't misinterpret the data? This book reveals how to do this by examining Pearson r from its conceptual meaning, to assumptions, special cases of the Pearson r, the biserial coefficient and tetrachoric coefficient estimates of the Pearson r, its uses in research (including effect size, power analysis, meta-analysis, utility analysis, reliability estimates and validation), factors that affect the Pearson r, and finally to additional nonparametric correlation indexes. After reading this book, the reader will be able to compare and distinguish the concepts of similarity and relationship, identify the distinction between correlation and causation, and to interpret correlations correctly.

Modern societies rely upon prodigious amounts of oil for transport activity. The impacts over the near term of increasing oil scarcity and higher prices... on transport will be among the major challenges facing humanity and will require a revolution in thinking about how we move people and goods.Transport Revolutions analyzes five prior episodes of rapid and radical change in the way people and goods travel. It examines the worldwide state of transport today, especially its energy use and impacts, positive and negative. The authors then show how ample movement of people and freight could be sustained beyond 2025 with much-reduced dependence on oil, focusing on the United States and China. Preparations for the end of cheap oil include:Substantial use of electricity for land transport, particularly through direct powering of vehiclesUse of wind to power water transportRadical changes in aviationRestructuring how transport is financed and managedWritten for transport professionals, those with a business interest in transport, and planners and policymakers, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in how transport will evolve in the years ahead.Richard Gilbert is a consultant on transport and energy and the author of numerous books, including several for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.Anthony Perl is a professor of political science and urban studies at Simon Fraser University. He has co-edited and co-authored four books, including New Departures: Rethinking Rail Passenger Policy for the Twenty-First Century and The Integrity Gap: Canada’s Environmental Policy and Institutions.

For many students, the classroom is not the central focus of school. The school's corridors and doorways are areas largely given over to student... control, and it is here that they negotiate their cultural identities and status among their peer groups. The flavor of this "corridor culture" tends to reflect the values and culture of the surrounding community.Based on participant observation in a racially segregated high school in New York City, Corridor Cultures examines the ways in which school spaces are culturally produced, offering insight into how urban students engage their schooling. Focusing on the tension between the student-dominated halls and the teacher-dominated classrooms and drawing on insights from critical geographers and anthropology, it provides new perspectives on the complex relationships between Black students and schools to better explain the persistence of urban school failure and to imagine ways of resolving the contradictions that undermine the educational prospects of too many of the nations' children.Dickar explores competing discourses about who students are, what the purpose of schooling should be, and what knowledge is valuable as they become spatialized in daily school life. This spatial analysis calls attention to the contradictions inherent in official school discourses and those generated by students and teachers more locally.By examining the form and substance of student/school engagement, Corridor Cultures argues for a more nuanced and broader framework that reads multiple forms of resistance and recognizes the ways students themselves are conflicted about schooling.

This Fourth Edition presents an updated overview of the essential aspects of corrosion science and engineering that underpin the tools and technologies... used for managing corrosion, enhancing reliability, and preventing failures. Select features of this new edition include: expanded discussions on electrochemical polarization, predicting corrosion using thermodynamics, steel reinforcements in concrete, and applications of corrosion control technologies in various industries; and a stronger emphasis on environmental concerns and regulations in the context of their impact on corrosion engineering.

This is an expanded edition of a classic work by the late Mars G. Fontana. It uniquely presents corrosion data in terms of corrosives or environments... rather than in terms of materials. Isocorrosion charts, created by Fontana, provide a quick look at candidates for a particular corrosive. It includes case histories on eight forms of corrosion and sections on nuclear waste, solar energy, and geothermal energy and discusses corrosion principles and applications, forms of corrosion, and corrosion testing

Winner of the Prix Goncourt and the 1994 Prix Maghreb, Tahar Ben Jelloun is one of the most acclaimed novelists writing in French today. Casablanca and... Tangier provide the backdrops for Corruption, an exotic and erotic tale of modern-day morality about Mourad, the last honest man in Morocco. After a lifetime of resistance, Mourad finally gives in to the demands of his materialistic wife and accepts "commissions" for his work: just one envelope stuffed with cash, then another. . .

Corruption is a worldwide phenomenon. Developing countries and those making a transition from socialism are particularly at risk. This book suggests how... high levels of corruption limit investment and growth and lead to ineffective government. Corruption creates economic inefficiencies and inequities, but reforms are possible to reduce the material benefits from payoffs. Corruption is not just an economic problem, however; it is also intertwined with politics. Reform may require changes in both constitutional structures and the underlying relationship of the market and the state. Effective reform cannot occur unless both the international community and domestic political leaders support change.

A groundbreaking book about suicide. In this new edition of his acclaimed work, Dr. Herbert Hendin casts new light on the problem of suicide, offering... what he calls a "psychosocial perspective." Demonstrating that treatment of seriously suicidal people is possible, he also shows how our social policy toward suicide is marked by misconception. He evaluates the "right-to-die" movement, and in a comprehensive new chapter he presents a powerful portrait of euthanasia and assisted suicide in the Netherlands. Interviews with the leading practitioners and proponents are included. This book has much to say not only about how we die but also about how we choose to live.
