In this book Herbert Marcuse makes clear that capitalism is now reorganizing itself to meet the threat of a revolution that, if realized, would be the... most radical of revolutions: the first truly world-historical revolution. Capitalism's counterrevolution, however, is largely preventive, and in the Western world altogether preventive. Yet capitalism is producing its own grave-diggers, and Marcuse suggests that their faces may be very different from those of the wretched of the earth. The future revolution will be characterized by its enlarged scope, for not only the economic and political structure, not only class relatoins, but also humanity's relation to nature (both human and external nature) tend toward radical transformation. For the author, the "liberation of nature" is the connecting thread between the economic-political and the cultural revolution, between "changing the world" and personal emancipation.

"Fast paced, gripping . . . [a] well written dive into the arcane world of counterterrorism over the past decade ." —Foreign Policy In... Counterstrike, Eric Schmitt and Thom Shanker of The New York Times take readers into a previously hidden theater of war, as U.S. ground troops, intelligence operatives, and top executive branch officials have fashioned effective new strategies to fight terrorism, in sharp contrast to the cowboy slogans that once characterized the U.S. government's public posture. They show how these innovative strategies, drawn from classic Cold War deterrence theory, were employed in the dramatic raid in which Osama bin Laden was killed, and in a new afterword the authors point to the ongoing challenges and successes facing America in the Middle East, in cyberspace, and at home.Filled with startling revelations about how our national security is being managed, Counterstrike will change the way Americans think about the ongoing struggle with violent radical extremism.

Inside the Pentagon's secretive and revolutionary new strategy to fight terrorism--and its game-changing effects in the Middle East and at homeIn the... years following the 9/11 attacks, the United States waged a "war on terror" that sought to defeat Al Qaeda through brute force. But it soon became clear that this strategy was not working, and by 2005 the Pentagon began looking for a new way.In Counterstrike, Eric Schmitt and Thom Shanker of The New York Times tell the story of how a group of analysts within the military, at spy agencies, and in law enforcement has fashioned an innovative and effective new strategy to fight terrorism, unbeknownst to most Americans and in sharp contrast to the cowboy slogans that characterized the U.S. government's public posture. Adapting themes from classic Cold War deterrence theory, these strategists have expanded the field of battle in order to disrupt jihadist networks in ever more creative ways.Schmitt and Shanker take readers deep into this theater of war, as ground troops, intelligence operatives, and top executive branch officials have worked together to redefine and restrict the geography available for Al Qaeda to operate in. They also show how these new counterterrorism strategies, adopted under George W. Bush and expanded under Barack Obama, were successfully employed in planning and carrying out the dramatic May 2011 raid in which Osama bin Laden was killed.Filled with startling revelations about how our national security is being managed, Counterstrike will change the way Americans think about the ongoing struggle with violent radical extremism.

Terrorism is no longer something that only happens to other countries.  Attacks on US soil in the 1990’s brought the reality of terrorism home and... the Sept 11th tragedy let us know that the United States is a high priority target. The goal of today’s terrorist is body count, and while traditional bombings have served them in the past, the allure of killing thousands of people with a very small amount of biological or chemical agent will prove irresistible.  Our only defense on the front line is a well-prepared emergency response team. The key to an effective terrorist response is to understand and contain the hazardous materials involved. Counter-Terrorism for Emergency Responders, Second Edition meticulously details the characteristics, actions, identification, containment, and emergency treatment of all types of agents. Drastically updated from the 1999 edition, chapter after chapter is packed with new information on chemical agents, biological agents, and explosive, nuclear, and incendiary devices.  Using his 26 years of experience in emergency services and his skills as a hazardous materials consultant in more than 15 states, the author prepares the first responder to handle everything from re-establishing control and on-scene triage to investigating the crime. Including information on pre-incident and avoidance tactics, the author provides new monitoring and detection techniques, protective equipment and decontamination, and an extensive list of resource organizations and training opportunities.  The worst may never happen to your community, but will you be prepared if it does?

This casebook, in a logical and student-friendly format, presents the challenges that terrorism poses to the law. The decisions of Congress, the... President, and the courts are organized around various counterterrorism strategies and processes. Strategies used in the United States are compared with those of other nations. The cases and notes explore fascinating issues seldom found elsewhere in law schools such as, crimes punishing speech; warrantless searches and seizures; data mining; foreign intelligence surveillance; extraordinary rendition; state secrets; lengthy military detention; enhanced interrogation techniques; unusual trial forums and processes; targeted killings; immigration sweeps; and compensation barriers. Illustrations include: boundary-blurring between criminal and military law reconsideration of traditional detention and interrogation practices mingling of investigation and intelligence-gathering exceptions to constitutional protections of individual rights new fault lines between courts, the executive, and Congress modifications to the law of armed conflict revisions to immigration law unique aspects of compensation systems related to terrorism. The book is structured into the following chapters and topics: Chapter I provides a broad brush introduction, primarily non-legal, to terrorism and counterterrorism, a short substitute for an undergraduate overview of this field. Chapters II and III explore antiterrorism criminal law (including punishments) and criminal procedures related to finding terrorists. Chapter IV then examines in detail a specific investigatory tool, foreign intelligence surveillance. Chapters V-VII present the legal battles over civilian and military detention and interrogation of alleged terrorists and the processes (mainly habeas corpus) for ending detention. Trial processes concerning defendants charged with terrorism offenses are treated in the context of both civilian trials (Chapter VIII) and military commission proceedings (Chapter IX). Chapter X explores the allocation of authority in the United States to deal with terrorism, followed by Chapter XI, which examines international law constraints on the use of military force as a counterterrorism tool. Finally, Chapters XII and XIII consider, respectively, the immigration system as a counterterrorism shield and civil liability as a tool for making terrorists and their supporters, as well as counterterrorism officials, pay for harm to individuals.

This book asserts that professionals who work with the old, the disabled and the dying need to confront their own fears of growing old and perhaps... helpless, of dying and the unknown, as well as their need for control, professional omnipotence and their need to be needed. Examination of the feelings experienced by the therapist towards the client is regarded as an important therapeutic tool and the basis for empathy and deeper understanding of both the older client's and the helper's own processes. Many case studies are woven throughout the book to illustrate how practitioners can use their own feelings and behaviour to work with clients more effectively.

Spotlighting Asian Americans on both sides of the motion picture camera, "Countervisions" examines the aesthetics, material circumstances, and politics... of a broad spectrum of films released in the last thirty years. This anthology focuses in particular on the growing presence of Asian Americans as makers of independent films and cross-over successes. Essays of film criticism and interviews with film makers emphasize matters of cultural agency that is, the practices through which Asian American actors, directors, and audience members have shaped their own cinematic images. One of the anthology's key contributions is to trace the evolution of Asian American independent film practice over thirty years.Essays on the Japanese American internment and historical memory, essays on films by women and queer artists, and the reflections of individual film makers discuss independent productions as subverting or opposing the conventions of commercial cinema. But "Countervisions" also resists simplistic readings of 'mainstream' film representations of Asian Americans and enumerations of negative images. Writing about Hollywood stars Anna May Wong and Nancy Kwan, director Wayne Wang, and erotic films, several contributors probe into the complex and ambivalent responses of Asian American audiences to stereotypical roles and commerical success. Taken together, the spirited, illuminating essays in this collection offer an unprecedented examination of a flourishing cultural production.Darrell Y. Hamamoto is Associate Professor in the Asian American Studies Program at the University of California, Davis. He is the author of "Nervous Laughter: Television Situation Comedy and Liberal Democratic Ideology", "Monitored Peril: Asian Americans and the Poltics of Television Representation", and "New American Destinies: a Reader in Contemporary Asian and Latino Immigration". Sandra Liu is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Ethnic Studies, University of California, Berkeley.

In Native American tradition, a warrior gained honor and glory by "counting coup" -- touching his enemy in battle and living to tell the tale. This is a... modern story of...COUNTING COUPIn this extraordinary work of journalism, Larry Colton journeys into the world of Montana's Crow Indians and follows the struggles of a talented, moody, charismatic young woman named Sharon LaForge, a gifted basketball player and a descendant of one of George Armstrong Custer's Indian scouts. But "Counting Coup" is far more than just a sports story or a portrait of youth. It is a sobering exposé of a part of our society long since cut out of the American dream.Along the banks of the Little Big Horn, Indians and whites live in age-old conflict and young Indians grow up without role models or dreams. Here Sharon carries the hopes and frustrations of her people on her shoulders as she battles her opponents on and off the court. Colton delves into Sharon's life and shows us the realities of the reservation, the shattered families, the bitter tribal politics, and a people's struggle against a belief that all their children -- even the most intelligent and talented -- are destined for heartbreak. Against this backdrop stands Sharon, a fiery, undaunted competitor with the skill to dominate a high school game and earn a college scholarship. Yet getting to college seems beyond Sharon's vision, obscured by the daily challenge of getting through the season -- physically and ps

Safe drinking water counts for nothing. A pollution-free environment counts for nothing. Even some people - namely women - count for nothing. This is... the case, at least, according to the United Nations System of National Accounts. Author Marilyn Waring, former New Zealand M.P., now professor, development consultant, writer, and goat farmer, isolates the gender bias that exists in the current system of calculating national wealth. As Waring observes, in this accounting system women are considered 'non-producers' and as such they cannot expect to gain from the distribution of benefits that flow from production. Issues like nuclear warfare, environmental conservation, and poverty are likewise excluded from the calculation of value in traditional economic theory. As a result, public policy, determined by these same accounting processes, inevitably overlooks the importance of the environment and half the world's population.Counting for Nothing, originally published in 1988, is a classic feminist analysis of women's place in the world economy brought up to date in this reprinted edition, including a sizeable new introduction by the author. In her new introduction, the author updates information and examples and revisits the original chapters with appropriate commentary. In an accessible and often humorous manner, Waring offers an explanation of the current economic systems of accounting and thoroughly outlines ways to ensure that the significance of the environment and the labour contributions of women receive the recognition they deserve.
