Residential design that is inspired, responsible, and in harmony with the planet: that is the concept behind cradle-to-cradle systems, which seek to go... beyond sustainability to the use of waste-free products that return to the earth s lifecycles. Cradle to Cradle Home Design: Process and Experience is a groundbreaking text that offers a case study in this revolutionary design concept via the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Home Competition, based out of Roanoke, Virginia. More than 600 submissions from students and professionals around the world provide the archive for the book, creating a spirited, smart, and engaging guide that both delights in the possibilities offered by the paradigm, and inspires an alternative approach to design. Developed for interior design and architecture studio courses as well as practicing design firms, this book is a must-read for anybody looking to incorporate sustainable design principles and materials into his or her work.

A manifesto for a radically different philosophy and practice of manufacture and environmentalism"Reduce, reuse, recycle" urge environmentalists; in... other words, do more with less in order to minimize damage. As William McDonough and Michael Braungart argue in their provocative, visionary book, however, this approach perpetuates a one-way, "cradle to grave" manufacturing model that dates to the Industrial Revolution and casts off as much as 90 percent of the materials it uses as waste, much of it toxic. Why not challenge the notion that human industry must inevitably damage the natural world, they ask.In fact, why not take nature itself as our model? A tree produces thousands of blossoms in order to create another tree, yet we do not consider its abundance wasteful but safe, beautiful, and highly effective; hence, "waste equals food" is the first principle the book sets forth. Products might be designed so that, after their useful life, they provide nourishment for something new-either as "biological nutrients" that safely re-enter the environment or as "technical nutrients" that circulate within closed-loop industrial cycles, without being "downcycled" into low-grade uses (as most "recyclables" now are). Elaborating their principles from experience (re)designing everything from carpeting to corporate campuses, the authors make an exciting and viable case for change.

Concentrating on technology, economics, labor, and social history, Cradle to Grave documents the full life cycle of one of America's great mineral... ranges from the 1840s to the 1960s. Lankton examines the workers' world underground, but is equally concerned with the mining communities on the surface. For the first fifty years of development, these mining communities remained remarkably harmonious, even while new, large companies obliterated traditional forms of organization and work within the industry. By 1890, however, the Lake Superior copper industry of upper Michigan started facing many challenges, including strong economic competition and a declining profit margin; growing worker dissatisfaction with both living and working conditions; and erosion of the companies' hegemony in a district they once controlled. Lankton traces technological changes within the mines and provides a thorough investigation of mine accidents and safety. He then focuses on social and labor history, dealing especially with the issue of how company paternalism exerted social control over the work force. A social history of technology, Cradle to Grave will appeal to labor, social and business historians.

"It's terrible, / getting what you want, / because that's when you know you'll always want / something different" confesses the speaker in Cradling... Monsoons with a fabulously poignant bravado that keeps the reader tractor-beamed in thrall and enthralled within the light of these smart, funny, heartbreakingly gorgeous poems. Opening with a poem about a father who "cut down his family tree / to build a bridge from Kokomo to San Francisco that's still burning," the speaker in Sarah McKinstry-Brown's poems conversely puts down roots and stays for the birth of a first child whose arrival sets the city of everything she knew before on fire. Curbing her own impulses for wanderlust and fire-starting, she instead stands squarely within the blaze that is motherhood and family-that cycle of immolation, flame, ash, and rekindling-in poems that gracefully shape shift between the different, conflicting identities contemporary women embody: daughter, lover, mother, artist. These poems make art from life, and reveal the making and living of life as an art of terrible power and tenderness. These poems are pure muscle, fierce heart. -Lee Ann Roripaugh, Author of On the Cusp of a Dangerous Year The poems in this stunning first collection are "accessible" in the best sense of that word, in the sense that Stephen Dunn's, Dorianne Laux's, and Ted Kooser's are. The subjects come mostly from everyday life-Picture Day at school, a Folgers commercial, comfort food, December in Omaha, "the Tall, Blonde-haired, Blue-eyed, Smart, Talented Woman who Keeps Hitting on my Husband" -in which the poet discovers the extraordinary. The lines seem like intense conversation, but they are, at the same time, deeply engaging poetry that shows a mastery of sound and rhythm and a gift for creating fresh, radiant metaphors. I'm reminded of how great dancers and acrobats must learn to move in a way that looks natural and effortless. Or, as Pope put it, "True ease in writing comes from art, not chance,/As those move easiest who have learned to dance." Like our best poets, Sarah McKinstry Brown has learned. -William Trowbridge, Author of Ship of Fool

In Crafting a Life in Essay, Story, Poem, Donald Murray demonstrates the craft that has been his discipline and joy for more than half a century. He... describes how the writing act has allowed him to live his life twice--once in experience and once again as the evolving draft illuminates the texture and meaning of that experience. Murray takes the reader into his private writer's workshop and not only reveals the basic techniques of writing essays, stories, and poems, but also discusses the attitudes--emotional and mental--that determine the effectiveness of his craft. Beginning and experienced writers will work beside this Pulitzer Prize winning craftsperson, catching ideas from life, developing them in language, shaping them into publishable forms. In the first section of the book, Murray talks about attitudes and skills that encourage and initiate writing. Then he deals with specific techniques of writing the personal essay, fiction, and poetry. In the final section, he explains the skills of revision and editing as well as ways to develop a writing community and submit work for publication. Crafting a Life in Essay, Story, Poem is both a celebration of the writing process and a practical manual on how to explore the world with the written line. It is a book that every teacher and every student of writing should own.

Overview: The 18th edition of Crafting and Executing Strategy represents one of our most important and thoroughgoing revisions ever. The newest member... of the author team, Margie Peteraf, led a thorough re-examination of every paragraph on every page of the 17th edition chapters. The overriding objectives were to inject new perspectives and the best academic thinking, strengthen linkages to the latest research findings, modify the coverage and exposition as needed to ensure squarely on-target content, and give every chapter a major facelift. While this 18th edition retains the same 12-chapter structure of the prior edition, every chapter has been totally refreshed. And the chapter content continues to be solidly mainstream and balanced, mirroring both the best academic thinking and the pragmatism of real-world strategic management. An attractive collection of 20 relevant, readable, and recent readings that amplify important topics in managing a company's strategy-making, strategy-executing process is included in this Concepts and Readings version to provide students with a taste of the literature of strategic management before tackling cases or simulation projects.Thompson 18e, your best case scenario!
