"We have at our disposal one of the greatest vehicles for...community-building known to humankind--the one called education." --from the foreword by... Parker Palmer"Connecting authentically and deeply with others across all dimensions of life enriches the human spirit. The sense of community resulting from such connections is a hallmark of a supportive campus environment, which we know is an important factor in enhancing student learning. The contributions to this book offer a vision we can work toward and provide instructive examples from different types of institutions to point the way." --George D. Kuh, chancellor's professor and director, National Survey of Student Engagement, Indiana University"Ernie Boyer was a giant in higher education. This book, a resource guide, focuses on one of his great loves--campus community. The book examines his contributions and offers a compelling agenda for action." --Arthur Levine, president, Teachers College, Columbia University"This well-written and timely book draws on the lessons learned from five very different institutions as they attempted to address a major challenge to higher education-building effective campus communities. Practitioners will find this to be an invaluable resource and guide as they attempt to bring Ernie Boyer's vision to life on their campuses. A great tribute to one of America's leading educators!" --Charles C. Schroeder, professor of higher education, University of Missouri-Columbia"There is no topic more important in higher education today than creating campus community. McDonald and his associates have indeed lived up to Ernest Boyer's legacy by presenting us with a remarkable set of campus models for us to admire. . . and emulate." --Yolanda T. Moses, president, American Association for Higher Education"This book comes at an auspicious time of educational transformation. Like the Boyer Center, this book's fundamental priority in meeting today's challenging new realities is the discovery and creation of new forms of community." --Glen R. Bucher, executive director, the Boyer Center

If a country’s Gross Domestic Product increases each year, but so does the percentage of its people deprived of basic education, health care, and... other opportunities, is that country really making progress? If we rely on conventional economic indicators, can we ever grasp how the world’s billions of individuals are really managing? In this powerful critique, Martha Nussbaum argues that our dominant theories of development have given us policies that ignore our most basic human needs for dignity and self-respect. For the past twenty-five years, Nussbaum has been working on an alternate model to assess human development: the Capabilities Approach. She and her colleagues begin with the simplest of questions: What is each person actually able to do and to be? What real opportunities are available to them? The Capabilities Approach to human progress has until now been expounded only in specialized works. Creating Capabilities, however, affords anyone interested in issues of human development a wonderfully lucid account of the structure and practical implications of an alternate model. It demonstrates a path to justice for both humans and nonhumans, weighs its relevance against other philosophical stances, and reveals the value of its universal guidelines even as it acknowledges cultural difference. In our era of unjustifiable inequity, Nussbaum shows how—by attending to the narratives of individuals and grasping the daily impact of policy—we can enable people everywhere to live full and creative lives.

Vibrant, believable characters help drive a fictional story. Along with a clever plot, well-drawn characters make us want to continue reading a novel or... finish watching a movie. In Creating Characters, Dwight V. Swain shows how writers can invent interesting characters and improve them so that they move a story along.'The core of character,' he says in chapter 1, 'lies in each individual story person s ability to care about something; to feel implicitly or explicitly, that something is important.' Building on that foundation the capacity to care Swain takes the would-be writer step-by-step through the fundamentals of finding and developing 'characters who turn you on.' This basic but thought-provoking how-to is a valuable tool for both the novice and the seasoned writer.

Creating Christian Granada provides a richly detailed examination of a critical and transitional episode in Spain's march to global empire. The city of... Granada-Islam's final bastion on the Iberian peninsula-surrendered to the control of Spain's "Catholic Monarchs" Isabella and Ferdinand on January 2, 1492. Over the following century, Spanish state and Church officials, along with tens of thousands of Christian immigrant settlers, transformed the formerly Muslim city into a Christian one. With constant attention to situating the Granada case in the broader comparative contexts of the medieval reconquista tradition on the one hand and sixteenth-century Spanish imperialism in the Americas on the other, Coleman carefully charts the changes in the conquered city's social, political, religious, and physical landscapes. In the process, he sheds light on the local factors contributing to the emergence of tensions between the conquerors and Granada's formerly Muslim, "native" morisco community in the decades leading up to the crown-mandated expulsion of most of the city's moriscos in 1569-1570.Despite the failure to assimilate the moriscos, Granada's status as a frontier Christian community under construction fostered among much of the immigrant community innovative religious reform ideas and programs that shaped in direct ways a variety of church-wide reform movements in the era of the ecumenical Council of Trent (1545-1563). Coleman concludes that the process by which reforms of largely Granadan origin contributed significantly to transformations in the Church as a whole forces a reconsideration of traditional "top-down" conceptions of sixteenth-century Catholic reform.

How do you set up supportive classrooms in which children can become real readers, writers, and inquirers? Can it be done every day, across the... curriculum? In the first edition, Short, Harste, and Burke presented practical theory of literacy instruction based on their work with classroom teachers. Their aim was to show practicing and preservice elementary teachers how to create the best possible literacy-learning environment. In this second edition, the authors offer more ideas and rich descriptions of how their curriculum moved from writing and reading to include inquiry. Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirersrepresents their latest thinking, along with lingering questions and new concerns. The first half of the book focuses on the authoring cycle and the ways in which Short, Harste, Burke, and other teacher-researchers have used the cycle as a curricular framework. The authors share their work within the writing curriculum, then move to the reading curriculum, and finally to rethinking curriculum as inquiry. They also discuss issues related to maintaining a community of inquirers. The second half of the book contains more detailed descriptions of curricular engagements within the authoring cycle framework, such as authors folder, bookmaking, and readers theatre. These classroom strategies have already worked for hundreds of teachers, and Short, Harste, and Burke are at their practical best as they share them with you. Extensive samples of student work are included. The ideas and experiences expressed in this volume are the result of a group of people who have worked together, thought together, and built from the work of others over time. Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirers is a resource you will refer to again and again.

In Creating Colonial Williamsburg, Anders Greenspan examines the restoration and re-creation of the structures and gardens of Virginia's colonial... capital beginning in 1926. The restoration was undertaken by the Rockefeller family, whose aim was to promote an appreciation for eighteenth-century ideals in the twentieth century. Ironically, those ideals, including democracy, individualism, and representative government, were often promoted at the expense of a more complete understanding of the town's true history. The meaning and purpose of Colonial Williamsburg has changed over time, along with America's changing social and political landscapes, making the study of this historic site a unique and meaningful entry point to understanding the shifting modern American character. In recent years, financial struggles and declining attendance forced a new interpretation of the town, extending the presentation into the period of the American Revolution, while adding new approaches such as street theater and a greater emphasis on technology. Over its eighty-year history, says Greenspan, Colonial Williamsburg has grown and matured, while still retaining its emphasis on the importance of eighteenth-century values and their application in the modern world.

Why should I do business with you… and not your competitor?Whether you are a retailer, manufacturer, distributor, or service provider – if you... cannot answer this question, you are surely losing customers, clients and market share. This eye-opening book reveals how identifying your competitive advantages (and trumpeting them to the marketplace) is the most surefire way to close deals, retain clients, and stay miles ahead of the competition. The five fatal flaws of most companies:• They don’t have a competitive advantage but think they do• They have a competitive advantage but don’t know what it is—so they lower prices instead• They know what their competitive advantage is but neglect to tell clients about it• They mistake “strengths” for competitive advantages• They don’t concentrate on competitive advantages when making strategic and operational decisionsThe good news is that you can overcome these costly mistakes – by identifying your competitive advantages and creating new ones. Consultant, public speaker, and competitive advantage expert Jaynie Smith will show you how scores of small and large companies substantially increased their sales by focusing on their competitive advantages. When advising a CEO frustrated by his salespeople’s inability to close deals, Smith discovered that his company stayed on schedule 95 percent of the time – an achievement no one else in his industry could claim. By touting this and other competitive advantages to customers, closing rates increased by 30 percent—and so did company revenues.Jack Welch has said, “If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete.” This straight-to-the-point book is filled with insightful stories and specific steps on how to pinpoint your competitive advantages, develop new ones, and get the message out about them.
