Postwar Canada was far more complex than the well-worn stereotypes of Cold War conformity and 1960s rebellion suggest. Various parts of the country... experienced nationalist awakenings; a baby boom was accompanied by increased immigration and an expanding labour force; women were demanding access to birth control; and Canada was rethinking its relationship with the United States. Creating Postwar Canada: Community, Diversity, and Dissent showcases new research on this period, exploring postwar Canada's diverse symbols and battlegrounds. Contributors to the first half of the collection consider evolving definitions of the nation in Quebec, Acadian New Brunswick, and English Canada. They examine the ways in which Canada was reimagined to include both the Canadian North and landscapes structured by trade and commerce. The essays that make up the latter half of the anthology analyze debates on shopping hours, professional striptease, the "provider" role of fathers, interracial adoption, sexuality on campus, and illegal drug use, issues that shaped how the country defined itself in sociocultural and political terms. This collection sheds light on an underexamined era in Canadian history. It also contributes to the historiography of nationalism, gender and the family, consumer cultures, and countercultures. It will appeal to historians, students, and readers interested in postwar Canada and the history of Canadian identity and culture.

A seminal figure in the field of public management, Mark Moore presents his summation of fifteen years of research, observation, and teaching about... what public sector executives should do to improve the performance of public enterprises. Useful for both practicing public executives and those who teach them, this book explicates some of the richest of several hundred cases used at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and illuminates their broader lessons for government managers. Moore addresses four questions that have long bedeviled public administration: What should citizens and their representatives expect and demand from public executives? What sources can public managers consult to learn what is valuable for them to produce? How should public managers cope with inconsistent and fickle political mandates? How can public managers find room to innovate? Moore's answers respond to the well-understood difficulties of managing public enterprises in modern society by recommending specific, concrete changes in the practices of individual public managers: how they envision what is valuable to produce, how they engage their political overseers, and how they deliver services and fulfill obligations to clients. Following Moore's cases, we witness dilemmas faced by a cross section of public managers--William Ruckelshaus and the Environmental Protection Agency, Jerome Miller and the Department of Youth Services, Miles Mahoney and the Park Plaza Redevelopment Project, David Sencer and the swine flu scare, Lee Brown and the Houston Police Department, Harry Spence and the Boston Housing Authority. Their work, together with Moore's analysis, reveals how public managers can achieve their true goal of producing public value.

Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Left Behind series are but the latest manifestations of American teenagers' longstanding fascination... with the supernatural and the paranormal. In this groundbreaking book, Lynn Schofield Clark explores the implications of this fascination for contemporary religious and spiritual practices. Relying on stories gleaned from more than 250 in-depth interviews with teens and their families, Clark seeks to discover what today's teens really believe and why. She finds that as adherence to formal religious bodies declines, interest in alternative spiritualities as well as belief in "superstition" grow accordingly. Ironically, she argues, fundamentalist Christian alarmism about the forces of evil has also fed belief in a wider array of supernatural entities. Resisting the claim that the media "brainwash" teens, Clark argues that today's popular stories of demons, hell, and the afterlife actually have their roots in the U.S.'s religious heritage. She considers why some young people are nervous about supernatural stories in the media, while others comfortably and often unselfconsciously blur the boundaries between those stories of the realm beyond that belong to traditional religion and those offered by the entertainment media. At a time of increased religious pluralism and declining participation in formal religious institutions, Clark says, we must completely reexamine what young people mean--and what they may believe--when they identify themselves as "spiritual" or "religious." Offering provocative insights into how the entertainment media shape contemporary religious ideas and practices, From Angels to Aliens paints a surprising--and perhaps alarming--portrait of the spiritual state of America's youth.

It is commonplace today to read about the importance of collaborative, hands-on science. But can we assume that children build knowledge simply through... their interactions with materials and each other? How can we be sure that students are engaged in meaningful and productive scientific inquiry? In Creating Scientific Communities, two classroom teachers and two university researchers reveal what a better understanding of early scientific literacy can tell us. Based on transcripts of classroom conversations and samples of children's writing, Creating Scientific Communities looks at the social context of the elementary classroom and its impact on science teaching and learning. In lessons structured much like those in a writers workshop, group work in science is bracketed by whole class meetings, providing numerous opportunities for students to construct meaning through dialogue with each other and their teacher. Throughout the lessons, the teachers use a variety of discourse strategies - including questioning, modeling, and dialogue journals - to support, extend, and ultimately assess their students' understanding. An approach to scientific inquiry that centers on group work and dialogue is necessarily unpredictable. Teachers must be purposeful, yet flexible, and collaboration must be guided by shared rules and norms. In Creating Scientific Communities, you will witness how these teachers and researchers collaborated to develop classroom environments in which students learn more than scientific concepts and procedural skills, they acquire the values and attitudes associated with successful scientific collaboration.

Dee Fink poses a fundamental question for all teachers: "How can I create courses that will provide significant learning experiences for my students?"... In the process of addressing this question, he urges teachers to shift from a content-centered approach to a learning-centered approach that asks "What kinds of learning will be significant for students, and how can I create a course that will result in that kind of learning?" Fink provides several conceptual and procedural tools that will be invaluable for all teachers when designing instruction. He takes important existing ideas in the literature on college teaching (active learning, educative assessment), adds some new ideas (a taxonomy of significant learning, the concept of a teaching strategy), and shows how to systematically combine these in a way that results in powerful learning experiences for students. Acquiring a deeper understanding of the design process will empower teachers to creatively design courses for significant learning in a variety of situations.
