“A sharp, spirited appreciation of where Turkey stands now, and where it may head.” —Carlin Romano, The Philadelphia Inquirer In the first... edition of this widely praised book, Stephen Kinzer made the convincing claim that Turkey was the country to watch—poised between Europe and Asia, between the glories of its Ottoman past and its hopes for a democratic future, between the dominance of its army and the needs of its civilian citizens, between its secular expectations and its Muslim traditions. In this newly revised edition, he adds much important new information on the many exciting transformations in Turkey’s government and politics that have kept it in the headlines, and also shows how recent developments in both American and European policies (and not only the war in Iraq) have affected this unique and perplexing nation.

"Abu-Jaber's voluptuous prose features insights into the Arab American community that are wisely, warmly depicted."—San Francisco... ChronicleThirty-nine-year-old Sirine, never married, lives with a devoted Iraqi-immigrant uncle and an adoring dog named King Babar. She works as a chef in a Lebanese restaurant, her passions aroused only by the preparation of food—until an unbearably handsome Arabic literature professor starts dropping by for a little home cooking. Falling in love brings Sirene's whole heart to a boil—stirring up memories of her parents and questions about her identity as an Arab American. Praised by critics from The New Yorker to USA Today for her first novel, Arabian Jazz ("an oracular tale that unfurls like gossamer"), Diana Abu-Jaber weaves with spellbinding magic a multidimensional love story set in the Arab-American community of Los Angeles. Written in a lush, lyrical style reminiscent of The God of Small Things, infused with the flavors and scents of Middle Eastern food, and spiced with history and fable, Crescent is a sensuous love story and a gripping tale of risk and commitment.

From Library Journal: As a graduate student in Japan during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Hamabata found himself in an unusual situation--a... third-generation Japanese-American, he could pass for a Japanese, but in cultural background he was treated primarily as an outsider. Writing from this dual perspective, Hamabata (sociology, Haverford Coll.) discusses a number of aspects of traditional and contemporary Japanese society--succession within family businesses; funeral rites and the role of ancestors; patterns of family authority; and attitudes regarding love and marriage. Throughout, he takes care to correlate his personal experiences with the literature in the field. An important contribution to the subject that deserves the attention of general readers as well as specialists. --Scott Wright, Coll. of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn. Crew (or Cockpit) Resource Management training originated from a NASA workshop in 1979 that focused on improving air safety. The NASA research at that... time found the primary cause of the majority of aviation accidents to be human error, and further showed the main problems to be failures of interpersonal communication, leadership, and decision making in the cockpit. By the time of publication of our first editon of CRM, was celebrated as the convergence of a concept, an attitude and a very practical approach to pilot training. Equally important was the convergence and enthusiastic support of the research community, aviation regulators, transport operators and the pilot unions. CRM was maturing, implementing and developing all at the same time. Cockpit Resource Management (CRM) has gained increased attention from the airline industry in recent years due to the growing number of accidents and near misses in airline traffic. This book, authored by the first generation of CRM experts, is the first comprehensive work on CRM. Cockpit Resource Management is a far-reaching discussion of crew coordination, communication, and resources from both within and without the cockpit. A valuable resource for commercialand military airline training curriculum, the book is also a valuable reference for business professionals who are interested in effective communication among interactive personnel.Fifteen years later, CRM concepts have endured by not only integrating themselves into the fabric of training, but also expanding the team concept, evolving into new applications, and possibly most important to the original operators, inspiring development and integration of CRM into safety and quality assurance goals at the corporate level. A variety of CRM models have been successfully adapted to different types of industries and organizations, all based on the same basic concepts and principles. It has been adopted by the fire service to help improve situational awareness on the fireground. The new edition of Crew Resource Management continues to focus on CRM in the cockpit, but also emphasizes that the concepts and training applications provide generic guidance and lessons learned for a wide variety of 'crews' in the aviation system as well as in the complex and high-risk operations of many non-aviation settings.Long considered the ?bible? in this field, much of the basic style and structure of CRM 1e will be retained in the new edition. Textbooks are often heavily supplemented with or replaced entirely by course packs in advanced courses in the aviation field, as it is essential to provide students with cutting edge information from academic researchers, government agencies (FAA), pilot associations, and technology (Boeing, ALION). Our edited textbook will offer ideal coverage with first hand information from each of these perspectives. Case examples, which are particularly important given the dangers inherent in real world aviation scenarios, are liberally supplied. An image collection and testbank will be offered, making us the only text on the market with ancillary supportMaterial from the first edition remains relevant today and will be fully updated, often by new authors now at the fore of the field. New material - to the tune of an additional 50% - will focuses on the challenges facing aviation specialists today. New topics will include: international and cultural aspects of CRM, design and implementation of Line-Oriented Flight Training (LOFT), airline applications beyond the cockpit, spaceflight resource management, non-aviation applications, AQP, LOSA and special issues pertaining to low-cost airline carriers. The second edition editors offer essential breath of experience in aviation human factors from multiple perspectives (academia, government, and private enterprise) and the proposed contributors have all been chosen as experts in their fields who represent the diversity of the research of activities and organisational experience of CRM. The only CRM text on the market offering an up-to-date synthesis of primary source material*Instructors benefit from being able to adopt a single text for their courses, saves them time taken up by putting together course packsNew edition thoroughly updated and revised to include major new findings, complete with discussion of the int'l/cultural aspects of CRM, the design and implementation of LOFT*Gives students and aviation professionals a firm foundation in both the extant research and current issuesInstructor web site with testbank and image collection*The only text offering ancillary supportLiberal use of case examples*Ensures that readers will know how to respond to dangers and implement solutions when placed in real-world situations where timing is of the essence

Cribs is a discrete sequence of poems probing into the manifolds of the book's title word: "crib" as a small child's bed, as literal translation, as... plagiarism, as a summary or key to understanding a literary work, as a manger for feeding animals, as confinement, as home, as a memory aid for illegal immigrants, and so on. Speaking in a forked/chopsticked tongue, the author explores translingual and cross-cultural terrains where the inchoate, tangential, and back-translational emerge and diverge to unsettle an adopted diction.

The world of "Crick Crack, Monkey" is a dual one. Tee, the central character, is suspended between the warmth, spontaneity, and exuberance of Tantie's... household, into which she and her brother are received when their father immigrates to England, and the formality and pretension of her Aunt Beatrice's world, which Tee is obliged to enter when she wins a scholarship. Tee's initiation into the middle class is an uneasy one: she is confused and disturbed by the discrimination of color and class that she learns at Aunt Beatrice's hands and by the attitudes and values that divide her two aunts. Tee's shifting perceptions find no resolution, only acknowledgment that coherence will require a mature revaluation of her experience.

Since the late 1960s, health care in the United States has been described as a system in crisis. No matter their position, those seeking to improve the... system have relied on the rhetoric of crisis to build support for their preferred remedies, to the point where the language and imagery of a health care crisis are now deeply embedded in contemporary politics and popular culture. In Cries of Crisis, Robert B. Hackey analyzes media coverage, political speeches, films, and television shows to demonstrate the role that language and symbolism have played in framing the health care debate, shaping policy making, and influencing public perceptions of problems in the health care system. He demonstrates that the idea of crisis now means so many different things to so many different groups that it has ceased to have any shared meaning at all. He argues that the ceaseless talk of “crisis,” without a commonly accepted definition of that term, has actually impeded efforts to diagnose and treat the chronic problems plaguing the American health care system. Instead, he contends, reformers must embrace a new rhetorical strategy that links proposals to improve the system with deeply held American values like equality and fairness.
