It approaches each criminal incident as its own universe of behaviors and relationships. Throughout the text, the author illustrates the most crucial tenet that any good criminal profiler should adhere to: the enthusiastic desire to investigate and examine the facts. With 35% new content, this edition contains cases in each chapter, along with the latest advances in evidence-based profiling. Criminal Profiling: Principles and Practice provides a compendium of original scientific research on constructing a criminal profile for crimes that are... not readily resolvable by conventional police investigative methods. Leading profiling expert Richard N. Kocsis, PhD, utilizes a distinct approach referred to as Crime Action Profiling (CAP), a technique that has its foundations in the disciplinary knowledge of forensic psychology. The initial four chapters examine the skills, accuracy, components, and processes surrounding the construction of a criminal profile. The next two chapters focus on CAP research, the methods developed for the profiling of violent crimes and describing a systematic method for the interpretation and use of the CAP models. The subsequent three chapters canvass the respective CAP studies undertaken for crimes of serial rape, serial/sexual murder, and serial arson. An explanation for how each of the models is developed is also given. The final chapters of the book are devoted to the geographical analysis of crime patterns and to a discussion of the format conventions and procedural guidelines for developing a criminal profile. Offering a scientifically grounded method for the construction of a criminal profile, Criminal Profiling: Principles and Practice provides law enforcement personnel, forensic psychologists and psychiatrists, criminologists, and forensic investigators with a step-by-step, practical guide for understanding and applying CAP techniques for the construction of a criminal profile in a systematic and replicable manner.

"Pardon me; I must seem to you so stupid! Why is the property of the woman who commits Murder, and the property of the woman who commits Matrimony,... dealt with alike by your law?" So ends the "little allegory" in conversational form with which Frances Power Cobbe opens the 1868 essay that gives this collection its title. Cobbe was a widely read essayist of remarkable lucidity and power; her pieces display incisive wit and remarkable focus as she returns repeatedly to "the woman question," but it was typical of the time that when Cobbe died she was described in the Wellesley Index to Victorian periodicals as a "miscellaneous writer." Cobbe was not alone; as much as 15 per cent of the essays in Victorian periodicals were written by women, yet even the best of these pieces were allowed by the male-dominated world of scholarship to disappear from print. This anthology makes available again some of the best Victorian writing by women. The second edition has been revised and updated; additions include a chronology and an essay by Frances Power Cobbe on the education of women.

Congratulations to Steve Tibbetts, winner of the Outstanding Professional Development Award at CSU-San Bernadino!“This book is interesting,... informative, comprehensive, and-more importantly for students of criminology-accessible.” -Robert Apel, University at Albany "Without doubt, Criminals in the Making will spark debate, incite controversy and challenge mainstream criminological understanding."-THEORETICAL CRIMINOLOGYWhy do individuals exposed to the same environment turn out so differently, with some engaging in crime and others abiding by societal rules and norms? Why are males involved in violent crime more often than females? And why do the precursors of serious pathological behavior typically emerge in childhood? The authors of this text address key questions surrounding criminal propensity by discussing studies of the life-course perspective-criminological research linking biological factors associated with criminality and social environmental agents thought to cause, facilitate, or otherwise influence one’s tendency towards criminal activity. The text offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary understanding of the current thinking in the field about criminal behavior over the course of a lifetime and ends on a positive note, highlighting interventions proven effective and illustrating how the life-course perspective has contributed to a greater understanding of the causes of crime. Key Features and Benefits Includes a recurring boxed feature on the thief ‘Stanley,’ adapted from Clifford Shaw’s classic case study that was published in a well-known book entitled “The Jack-Roller: A Delinquent Boy’s Own Story” to clarify the life-course concept Provides numerous helpful illustrations of the brain and nervous system to illustrate biological concepts, Addresses interesting issues such as the impact of lead on brain development and the limits of parental influences in boxed inserts throughout the book Features policy recommendations and initiatives for the prevention of crime in the concluding chapter to spark classroom discussion and guide future student research Intended Audience: Designed for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in criminal justice and criminology, sociology, and psychology programs, this groundbreaking supplement provides novel insights into criminal pathology for courses such as Criminological Theory and Introduction to Criminology. “I think this is going to be an important book, one that generates discussion and maybe even motivates criminology to become more scientific. This book will force people to reassess their understanding of crime and see how many known facts of crime are illusory once biological concepts are considered.” -Matt DeLisi, Iowa State University
