Does children's literature portray the authentic perspectives of children, or does it present the views of the adults who write, sell, and review the... books? How does it demonstrate the ways in which perceptions of childhood have developed over the centuries? How are issues of censorship and freedom of speech brought to light in children's books? Addressing these and many other issues, Crosscurrents of Children's Literature: An Anthology of Texts and Criticism is the only anthology of classic and contemporary readings in children's literature to combine primary works with related critical essays. Organized thematically around modern critical debates, the selections explore how children's literature integrates instruction and entertainment, oral and written traditions, realism and fantasy, words and pictures, classics and adaptations, and perspectives on childhood and adult life. Illuminating the rich diversity of children's literature studies, the book incorporates approaches from several different fields including psychology, education, history, cultural studies, and literary criticism. It spans a wide range of literary periods and genres, balancing contemporary and historical texts, excerpts and longer selections, traditional and nontraditional materials, and English and translated works. The volume includes Native American and African American writings and offers insights into a variety of cultural and ethnic traditions. It is enhanced by introductory essays, illustrations, an alternate table of contents organized by genre, a timeline, and a bibliography of critical works. An Instructor's Manual and a Website (http://crosscurrentsoup.org) provide additional helpful resources. Examining how literary forms and genres, diverse influences, and evolving attitudes toward childhood have shaped the field of children's literature, Crosscurrents of Children's Literature: An Anthology of Texts and Criticism encourages students and other readers to challenge common assumptions about children, childhood, and children's books.

This Understanding treatise provides students with an analysis of the underlying rationales of Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code, the federal... Bankruptcy Code as it relates to Article 9, and other relevant state and federal legislation. Familiarity with these rationales is critical for a true understanding of the law of secured transactions. The organization of this text is largely based upon the traditional five-part approach to the law of secured transactions:• Scope of the article;• Attachment of security interests;• Perfection of security interests;• Priorities among competing claimants (including extensive treatment of the effects of bankruptcy on security interests); and • Enforcement of security interests. In addition, this treatise explains in practical terms the essential elements of different types of secured transactions, giving students a perspective that is crucial to their ability to understand how Article 9 functions in the real world. For example, it describes the structure and use of financing arrangements that are made possible through such techniques as asset-based securitization, mortgage warehouse lending, terminal and field warehousing, financing of accounts, factoring of accounts, and floor planning, as well as other methods of transacting business. The new Fourth Edition provides case citations to recent judicial opinions interpreting the provisions of revised Article 9. Finally the Fourth Edition provides comprehensive treatment of the interaction between Article 9 and the Bankruptcy Code, fully updated to reflect all changes made by the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005.Entries in the Table of Contents include a descriptive word phrase, along with relevant section numbers of the UCC and the Bankruptcy Code. The Table of Contents does not cite all the provisions that might be relevant, but only the most fundamental provisions relating to the particular topic. This approach should aid students using the book as a supplemental text by enabling them to find the relevant discussion based on either the subject or the basic statutory section numbers. The Index and the Table of Statutes and Authorities enable a more detailed search.

In today's theological landscape the significance of the cross has become strongly affirmed and radically questioned. This exciting volume gathers... theologians and historians who have thought through these critical and constructive issues: Do traditional understandings of the cross valorize suffering or violence? Are the older soteriological models, which see redemption as a kind of ransom or debt satisfaction, fitting for the contemporary worldview? Do they produce a piety that acquiesces in needless suffering, or does the cross precisely meet the massive suffering and injustice of today’s world? Following an expert introduction to the issues and options by editor Marit Trelstad, each author addresses the Christian symbol of the cross in the context of current theological, sociological, political, or environmental issues.

The historic sites and nearly pristine estuary of the Piscataqua region represent a mixture of heritage and nature unparalleled in New England. They are... worth preserving. For centuries the Piscataqua region was an extended maritime community connected by the Great Bay Estuary, the short seacoast of New Hampshire and southern Maine, and the seven tributary rivers that fortify the Piscataqua River itself. Moving water shaped the region--under its vessels, at its mills, and across its marshes. Carrying the freight of our history, and holding out the promise of community-based conservation, this book (and these waters) invite you on a journey of exploration and renewal. Join the naturalists, fishermen ,and historic preservationists who have all felt the pull of this place, and who wish to sustain it in the face of the headlong development consuming America today.

We have read the stories of those who have "crossed" lines of race and class and culture. But few have written of crossing—completely and... entirely—the gender line. Crossing is the story of Deirdre McCloskey (formerly Donald), once a golden boy of conservative economics and a child of 1950s and 1960s privilege, and her dramatic and poignant journey to becoming a woman. McCloskey's account of her painstaking efforts to learn to "be a woman" unearth fundamental questions about gender and identity, and hatreds and anxieties, revealing surprising answers.

Beginning with a Cuban Catholic ritual in Miami, this book takes readers on a momentous theoretical journey toward a new understanding of religion. At... this historical moment, when movement across boundaries is of critical importance for all areas of human life—from media and entertainment to economy and politics—Thomas Tweed offers a powerful vision of religion in motion, dynamic, alive with crossings and flows. A deeply researched, broadly gauged, and vividly written study of religion such as few American scholars have ever attempted, Crossing and Dwelling depicts religion in place and in movement, dwelling and crossing. Tweed considers how religion situates devotees in time and space, positioning them in the body, the home, the homeland, and the cosmos. He explores how the religious employ tropes, artifacts, rituals, and institutions to mark boundaries and to prescribe and proscribe different kinds of movements across those boundaries; and how religions enable and constrain terrestrial, corporeal, and cosmic crossings. Drawing on insights from the natural and social sciences, Tweed's work is grounded in the gritty particulars of distinctive religious practices, even as it moves toward ideas about cross-cultural patterns. At a time when scholars in many fields shy away from generalizations, this book offers a responsible way to think broadly about religion, a topic that is crucial for understanding the contemporary world. Lucid in explanations, engaging in presentation, rich in examples, Crossing and Dwelling has profound implications for the study and teaching of religion in our day.

The Navajo people of Canyon de Chelly must negotiate a delicate balance between the old and the new as they struggle to maintain their traditional ways... of life in the midst of archaeologists, U.S. Park Service employees, and the increasing numbers of tourists who come to visit this hauntingly beautiful part of northeastern Arizona. Anthropologist-writer Jeanne Simonelli, who worked at Canyon de Chelly as a seasonal park ranger, interweaves stories of her personal experiences and friendships with canyon residents with discussions of native history and culture in the region. Focusing on the members of one extended Navajo family, Simonelli describes the small moments of their daily lives: shearing goats, baking bread, attending a solemn all-night health ceremony, washing clothes at the local laundromat, playing traditional games and contemporary sports, talking about the history of the Diné--the Navajo people--and pondering the changes they have witnessed in the canyon and the difficulties they confront. Crossing Between Worlds is sumptuously illustrated with insightful black-and-white photographs that document the everyday activities of Navajo families in one of the most spectacular corners of the American Southwest.

Rigoberta Menchu is a worldwide symbol of courage in the continuing fight of indigenous peoples for justice The Guatemalan Indian leader first came to... the world's attention with the publication of her autobiography I, Rigocerta Menchu in 1984. The book chronicled the terrible hardship of her childhood in Guatemala, including the murder of her brother, father and mother at the hands of a ruthless military. But it also captured the dignity of Indian daily life in a cadence which was beautifully simple. I, Rigoberta Menchu has become an international best seller with one million copies in print. In Crossing Borders, Rigoberta picks up her story where the first volume left oft. In 1981 she fled from Guatemala to Mexico City, deeply traumatized by the violence against her family and community. She resolved to dedicate her life to the Indian cause and painstakingly built a solidarity movement with the Indians living as outlaws in Guatemala's mountains. In 1988 she returned to Guatemala as a representative of the opposition in exile. She was immediately arrested and was released only after an international outcry. Danielle Mitterand and Desmond Tutu were amongst the leading names in an international campaign to secure the Nobel Peace Prize for Rigoberta, which she was awarded in 1992. The long struggle to build effective representation for indigenous peoples has taken Rigoberta around the world and its telling is a thread throughout this book. But Crossing Borders is more than an account of a political campaign. In these pages Rigoberta also talks with deep affection about her mother and the traditions of her Mayan background. In her introduction to I, Rigocerta Menchu the ethnologist Elizabeth Burgos Debray writes: "Her voice is so heart-rendingly beautiful because it speaks to us of every facet of the life of a people and their oppressed culture. Her story is overwhelming because what she has to say is simple and true." In Crossing the Borders that story continues to enchant and inspire.
