Culture and Leadership Across the World: The GLOBE Book of In-Depth Studies of 25 Societies is the second major publication of GLOBE (Global Leadership... and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness), a groundbreaking, large-scale project on international management research featuring contributions from nearly 18,000 middle managers from 1,000 organizations in 62 countries, perhaps the largest project of its kind ever undertaken. This volume effectively presents a complex collection of global research addressing the culture of particular countries, leadership qualities within those countries, and recommendations on how managers should conduct business in countries other than their own. A massive effort with a cross-cultural focus and broad international appeal, this book explores: how leadership is conceptualized and enacted in its cultural milieu; quantitative data including middle manager questionnaires, unobtrusive measurement, and participant observation data; qualitative research from interviews, focus groups, and media analyses; and theoretical and methodological pitfalls that arise in the effort to develop universal management theories. This book is a coherent and well-organized presentation of the findings of the GLOBE Project and will appeal to scholars in leadership, management, international business, cultural studies; and also to practicing managers.

Few encounters in antiquity have had more profound consequences than that between Greek culture and Republican Rome. Focusing on the ruling elites of... the middle and later Republic, for whom Hellenic literature, religion, and visual arts were at once intimidating and appealing, Erich S. Gruen offers a compelling account of the assimilation and adaptation of Greek culture by the Romans.Gruen examines such key cultural developments in the history of Republican Rome as the adaptation of the legend of Troy to create a special place for Rome within Hellenic traditions and Cato's campaign to distinguish Roman cultural achievements by defining them in contrast to those of the Greeks. He describes the diverse purposes-civic, religious, and political-for which the Romans used Greek art, as well as the reshaping of Hellenic models to express a distinctively Roman character in historical reliefs, portraiture, and comic drama. The book treats a variety of means whereby the Greek legacy was molded to suit the living Roman tradition. Gruen shows that this complex process of cultural transformation served to sharpen the Romans' sense of their own values their national character, and their international image.Demonstrating that the Roman response to Hellenism was far more subtle and dynamic than has generally been acknowledged, Culture and National Identity in Republican Rome will be welcomed as an outstanding contribution by readers interested in ancient history, classical literature, and the history of art.

"This work of Dr. Aziza Braithwaite Bey is evidence of her life long insistence that the contributions of ancient and global cultures be represented in... every possible discourse where issues of human development and human contribution are discussed. First, as an internationally trained fashion designer; second, as a master of museology and costume curating and; third as a doctor of diversity in cultural education teaching in the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences at Lesley University, Dr. Bey's work now gives instructors a manual that introduces a plethora of comparative cultural material and evidence into the classroom-and into our thinking. Through well researched examples, her book carefully insists that both instructor and student begin to think of humanity outside of their own parochial setting. Through lessons on food, clothing and ritual, this manual purposefully underscores a deep appreciation of world-wide culture. In this era of globalization, it becomes particularly important that we manage to identify distinctions, still, in ethnic form and culture-so that no modern effort toward homogeneity obscures those particular ways and means that varieties of cultures have solved similar problems. This manual gently helps the user to create an understanding that the diverse range of human genius is the greatest contribution to civilization, world-wide. In this manual Bey celebrates that genius...of humanity to demonstrate how similar problems can be solved in acutely distinct ways while maintaining similarities of import across of the range of possibility. To this end Dr. Bey's work and her insistence on cultural inclusion demand both our respect and applause." Since Cultural Competency for Health Professionals was first published in 2000, much has changed in the world. The terrorist attacks of September 11,... 2001, have resulted in increased suspicion in the United States and around the world of people of Arab descent. In the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that began shortly thereafter, people from many countries have been killed or seriously wounded, among them U.S. service members whose injuries are significantly challenging health care practitioners in the armed services and Veterans Administration hospitals around the country. In addition, the United States is becoming an increasingly diverse nation, and advances in communications technology have made it possible to connect with cultures from around the world in an instant. In the world of occupational therapy, the concepts of occupational justice, community-based rehabilitation, and health disparities have been introduced and studied. AOTA's Centennial Vision has called for a culturally diverse occupational therapy workforce by 2017, the 100th anniversary of the profession. Also, the first culturally sensitive occupational therapy practice model, the Kawa Model, has been developed to provide a culturally appropriate intervention option for Japanese clients. The future of health care and of the occupational therapy profession are merging with the realities of this changing world. Becoming culturally competent is a requirement for occupational therapy professionals today, who have opportunities to become leaders as agents for change so that all people, privileged and disadvantaged alike, have equal access to health care, social and political resources, and meaningful occupation. This book provides information, theories, and examples of how this can happen as well as introduces the Cultural Competency Model, which occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants can use to help provide in culturally competent care to all clients.

The second edition of Culture and Power in the Classroom could not have come at a better time. Enormously significant for many teachers and community... activists since it was first published, the book has changed how they view and how they do education, as we can see from the personal essays by teachers, professors, and community activists at the conclusion of this new edition.... Unlike other texts that discuss educational failure as if it were context-free, the book provided a historical context for understanding underachievement in our nation. Thoroughly revised to include the new thinking on diversity and learning, the book now also includes a new chapter on assessment and the brain as well as thought-provoking and inspired reflections from teachers, parents, and community activists. This second edition has been a massive undertaking, one that will be welcomed by previous and new readers alike. -Sonia Nieto, from the Foreword to the new edition

"The main thrust of this book is to deliver a major critique of materialist and rationalist explanations of social and cultural forms, but the in the... process Sahlins has given us a much stronger statement of the centrality of symbols in human affairs than have many of our 'practicing' symbolic anthropologists. He demonstrates that symbols enter all phases of social life: those which we tend to regard as strictly pragmatic, or based on concerns with material need or advantage, as well as those which we tend to view as purely symbolic, such as ideology, ritual, myth, moral codes, and the like. . . ."—Robert McKinley, Reviews in Anthropology
