This creatively written introductory work is full of insights about how humanity’s defining adaptation has evolved and functions. What makes van der... Elst’s approach uniquely engaging is his focus on the implications of technology, the ways humans organize themselves, and value assumptions for individuals’ life chances and choices. He confronts readers with the need to question their enculturated biases, instills appreciation of the origins of culture in biology and language, and explains such topics as the varieties of family and marriage types and the rise of inequality. Extending the thrust of the popular first edition, this totally revised second edition includes: 1) highlighted, entertaining vignettes that serve as germane examples; 2) an expanded treatment of language; 3) end-of-chapter questions for reflection and discussion; and 4) a new chapter that demystifies kinship nomenclature. As a key driver to bottom-line business success, organizational culture is a critical element to your total rewards strategy. Before you decide... which total rewards programs are right for your employees, you first should create the right culture. This poses a major challenge for employers. But the reward for developing a vibrant culture especially a culture that your employees embrace can pay huge dividends. This book serves as a template for assessing and managing an organizational culture. Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to the subject. But the tools provided in the book make it easy to understand not only what defines culture and how it works, but also ways you can influence it and make it work to your company's advantage. Action and Discussion Points are sprinkled liberally throughout the text, making the book both reader-friendly and accessible. Other quick, value-added takeaways, such as helpful hints, checklists and resources, make this a publication well worth owning and adding to your human resources library.

"Explains brilliantly the structures and processes of middle-class culture in historical perspective."--Robert Nye, Rutgers University "[This]... illuminating study of the Swedish middle class around the turn of the century . . . is one welcome sign that bourgeois, too, are once again recognized as parts of society worth studying . . . to be understood rather than to be savaged. Culture Builders is a welcome sign of yet another development: the ease with which historical studies may be integrated with neighboring disciplines."--Journal of Modern History "The authors take an impressively broad intellectual perspective. . . . The everyday routines of bourgeoisie, peasantry, and working class are dramatically portrayed through a skillful weaving together of excerpts from ethnological archives, schoolbooks, memoirs, novels, and etiquette manuals . . . provides insight into the sociocultural complexities, conflicts, and contradictions that are ignored in widely held national stereotypes."--American Anthropologist "Unites historical and ethnological approaches so as to present a way of life that will be of interest not only to scholars of Scandinavia but to historians, sociologists, and everyone trying to describe and interpret the bourgeois Western culture during the nineteenth century."--Ethnos Jonas Frykman and Orvar Lofgren teach in the Department of European Ethnology at the University of Lund, Sweden.

Are cultural centers ethnic enclaves of segregation, or safe havens that provide minority students with social support that promotes persistence and... retention?Though Black cultural centers boast a 40-year history, there is much misinformation about them and the ethnic counterparts to which they gave rise. Moreover, little is known about their historical roots, current status, and future prospects. The literature has largely ignored the various culture center models, and the role that such centers play in the experiences of college students. This book fills a significant void in the research on ethnic minority cultural centers, offers the historic background to their establishment and development, considers the circumstances that led to their creation, examines the roles they play on campus, explores their impact on retention and campus climate, and provides guidelines for their management in the light of current issues and future directions. In the first part of this volume, the contributors provide perspectives on culture centers from the point of view of various racial/ethnic identity groups, Latina/o, Asian, American Indian, and African American. Part II offers theoretical perspectives that frame the role of culture centers from the point of view of critical race theory, student development theory, and a social justice framework. Part III focuses specifically on administrative and practice-oriented themes, addressing such issues as the relative merits of full- and part-time staff, of race/ethnic specific as opposed to multicultural centers, relations with the outside community, and integration with academic and student affairs to support the mission of the institution. For administrators and student affairs educators who are unfamiliar with these facilities, and want to support an increasingly diverse student body, this book situates such centers within the overall strategy of improving campus climate, and makes the case for sustaining them. Where none as yet exist, this book offers a rationale and blueprint for creating such centers. For leaders of culture centers this book constitutes a valuable tool for assessing their viability, improving their performance, and ensuring their future relevance – all considerations of increased importance when budgets and resources are strained. This book also provides a foundation for researchers interested in further investigating the role of these centers in higher education.

Change in the culture of long-term care and the care of our elders is urgently needed! This insightful book lights the way. This book will inform you... about the theoretical and practical applications of culture change within the institutional long-term care setting. It examines existing models of “positive cultures,” emphasizing philosophy, underpinning, and implementation. You'll gain a greater understanding of theoretical frameworks for organizational change, of the changes that can occur in all members of the long-term care community, and of culture change in the context of broad organizational experience and cultural competence. From the editors: “This text provides a timely and comprehensive approach to understanding culture change from the perspective of management and business as well as policy and regulatory guidelines and the framework for aging services. It will provide the reader with an understanding of the current state of the art in conceptualizing long-term care environments that are resident-centered and resident-directed, that respect the individuality of the staff, and that are high-performance entities. The theory and practice of culture change are presented with an eye toward a future where aging people and their families will be both consumers and providers of long-term care.” The first section of Culture Change in Long-Term Care explores the cultural values existing in today's long-term care environment that make us desirous of culture change. The second section examines existing models and networks of culture change in long-term care, including the Eden Alternative, Wellspring, and Pioneer Network Section three brings you to the frontline with case studies from urban, suburban, and rural facilities, facilities with and without unionized staff, facilities from various geographic regions of the United States, and facilities whose experience ranges from years to a decade. Processes, challenges, and qualitative/quantitative findings are included. Section four provides international perspectives, with practical advice from Australia, Sweden, and British Columbia. The final section of Culture Change in Long-Term Care explores the underlying question: “Is change realistic?” This section explores the role of state government, public policy, and the regulatory environment in accomplishing culture change. With Culture Change in Long-Term Care you'll get a theoretical perspective on culture and culture change, as well as quality-of-life models and case studies that will help you learn if—and how—such a process is achievable in your institution. "These guys are funny daredevils of performance, totally fearless as they skewer convention and lazy thinking. Cool."—Eric Bogosian"Important social... satire for these urgent times."—Dolores Huerta, Vice President, United Farm Workers Union"Keep kicking them in the cojones."—George CarlinThe newest work by the ever-outrageous comic trio, Culture Clash (Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas, and Herbert Siguenza) collects their four most recent investigations into contemporary American culture as viewed in four very distinct American cities. Each piece was commissioned by a local theatre company who invited our three lads into their communities and unlocked the doors. This volume includes:• "Bordertown" examinines the twin border cities of San Diego and Tijuana with special guest appearances by Charleton Heston, Shamu the Killer Whale, and Sidewinder Sam. • "Nuyorican Stories" brings the Clash to the Big Apple as they delve into the personal histories of the early Puerto Rican political activists in New York. • "Mission Magic Mystery Tour" is Culture Clash’s return to their home turf of San Francisco’s Mission District as the locals withstand an all-out invasion by the dot-com generation. •"Dreaming of Lincoln" brings the fearless troupe to our nation’s capital for a unique look at the land of the free.Culture Clash formed in 1984 to fill a unique role in American arts. Their nominal mission is to show cultures in opposition and, by opposing them, bring them closer together. But their talents are too expansive to be restricted to just "political theatre." Culture Clash have managed to gerrymander theatre’s traditional map, erasing the borders between any and all districts they choose to explore. They have a style all their own with a foundation that harkens back to the best vaudevillians of the U.S. and Latin America. Comedy and satire is what they feed on, in the tradition of Lenny Bruce, the Marx Brothers, Charlie Chaplin, and Catinflas.
