Sometimes, the greatest comebacks take place far away from the ball field.Meet Peter Friedman, high school freshman. Talented photographer. Former... baseball star. When a freakish injury ends his pitching career, Peter has some major things to figure out. Is there life after sports? Why has his grandfather suddenly given him thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment? And is it his imagination, or is the super-hot star of the girls' swim team flirting with him, right in front of the amazing new girl in his photography class? In his new novel, teen author Jordan Sonnenblick performs his usual miraculous feat: exploring deep themes of friendship, romance, family, and tragedy, while still managing to be hilariously funny.

This fifth edition has been fully updated to cover the many advances made in CAGD and curve and surface theory since 1997, when the fourth edition... appeared. Material has been restructured into theory and applications chapters. The theory material has been streamlined using the blossoming approach; the applications material includes least squares techniques in addition to the traditional interpolation methods. In all other respects, it is, thankfully, the same. This means you get the informal, friendly style and unique approach that has made Curves and Surfaces for CAGD: A Practical Guide a true classic. The book's unified treatment of all significant methods of curve and surface design is heavily focused on the movement from theory to application. The author provides complete C implementations of many of the theories he discusses, ranging from the traditional to the leading-edge. You'll gain a deep, practical understanding of their advantages, disadvantages, and interrelationships, and in the process you'll see why this book has emerged as a proven resource for thousands of other professionals and academics. * Provides authoritative and accessible information for those working with or developing computer-aided geometric design applications.* Covers all significant CAGD curve and surface design techniques-from the traditional to the experimental.* Includes a new chapter on recursive subdivision and triangular meshes.* Presents topical programming exercises useful to professionals and students alike.* Offers complete C implementations of many of the book's examples via a companion Web site.

This introductory textbook puts forth a clear and focused point of view on the differential geometry of curves and surfaces. Following the modern point... of view on differential geometry, the book emphasizes the global aspects of the subject. The excellent collection of examples and exercises (with hints) will help students in learning the material. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students will find this a nice entry point to differential geometry. In order to study the global properties of curves and surfaces, it is necessary to have more sophisticated tools than are usually found in textbooks on the topic. In particular, students must have a firm grasp on certain topological theories. Indeed, this monograph treats the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and discusses the Euler characteristic. The authors also cover Alexandrov's theorem on embedded compact surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with constant mean curvature. The last chapter addresses the global geometry of curves, including periodic space curves and the four-vertices theorem for plane curves that are not necessarily convex. Besides being an introduction to the lively subject of curves and surfaces, this book can also be used as an entry to a wider study of differential geometry. It is suitable as the text for a first-year graduate course or an advanced undergraduate course.

Three pivotal works conceived by the avant-garde poet as a trilogy and now together in one volume at last.Rosmarie Waldrop's Curves to the Apple... brings together three highly praised and influential titles: The Reproduction of Profiles, Lawn of Excluded Middle, and Reluctant Gravities. Though originally published separately, these prose poems have always been intended as a loose trilogy of thought and feelingor of thought manifested as feeling. The author comments: "Just as the title Curves to the Apple combines the organic and geometry (not to mention myth and history of science) the poems navigate the conflicting, but inextricable claims of body and mind, especially the female body and feelings in a space of logic and physics. The poems could all be called dialogic, reaching out across a synaptic (sometimes humorous) gap to a possible 'you' (though it may be rhetorical, another point of view in the same mind). But while the 'I' dominates the first two volumes, the third gives both voices equal space and chance."

The repertory of architectural shapes has grown considerably over the last years. The offices of Zaha Hadid, Frank O. Gehry or Sir Norman Foster and the... younger scene with its progressive designers are increasingly using geometrically complex shapes for architectural designs. Rhinoceros® is one of the programs used for 3D modeling. It was originally conceived for the design of ships, jewelry and consumer goods, but its strengths are also evident in an architectural context. Rhinoceros® is precise, flexible and cost-efficient. It offers a range of interfaces, makes it possible to steer complex processes and accompanies the user from the design, to its rendering, to its final execution. Daniel Lordick is an architect himself; he shows the reader the different Rhinoceros® 3D modeling techniques, step by step. Small design tasks serve as detailed guides through the program functions. The reader learns how to handle open areas and shape styling and the completion of models with Rapid Prototyping or laser cutting.

In his second collection of poems, Stephen Cushman explores, appraises, and celebrates many different forms of connections-domestic, social historical,... and religious. With an easygoing voice, an engaging humor, and a sure understanding of his craft, he addresses subjects from marriage and travel to urbanism and the Civil War, illustrating the rewards of a sensitive regard for the junctions in everyday life and language. Invoking "all the lessons they ever taught me / about ordination in the ordinary," he reflects on members of his family, affirming attachments of marriage and blood. Beyond those immediate ties lie the connections of history-which take him to ancient Egypt, wartime Virginia, and Greece under Nazi occupation-as well as the broader bonds of struggling to love neighbors and strangers: a panhandler on a city street, an inmate in a county jail, a nun at a convent window, a fellow passenger in a subway car. In trying to make and maintain any of these links, Cushman avoids lapses of sentimental piety, admitting instead, in the words of the title poem, "I worship the sacred and savor the profane." Deftly balancing reverence and irreverence, the poems in Cussing Lesson both bless and curse. Whatever mode Cushman chooses and whatever form he employs, connections made by heart and head find their expression in his finely tuned confluence of words.
