This Lecture Notebook is designed to be used for a ten-week course on Introduction to Database Management. Even though the notebook was developed to be... used with FUNDAMENTALS OF DATABASE SYSTEMS by Elmasri/Navathe (3rd edition, 1999, Benjamin Cummings), the Notebook can be used with many other textbooks. The emphasis of this course is the practical application of database theory to real-world problems and database systems. The key features of this Notebook include: Database design using entity-relationship modeling, Translation techniques of entity relationship diagrams into relational schemas, Database integrity, Basics of relational algebra and update propagation, Database application development, and Data manipulation using Access 2000 and SQL in Oracle 8. In the fourth edition of this Notebook [the author has] corrected typos from the third edition and reflected the third edition of Elmasri and Navathe's book. The fourth edition also updated the contents in several chapters. Appendices were also revised for improved readability and the new version of Access, which was updated for Access 2000. The author has used the Notebook for many years in his Database Management course at the College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University.

Fifty years ago, in 1984, George Orwell imagined a future in which privacy was demolished by a totalitarian state that used spies, video surveillance,... historical revisionism, and control over the media to maintain its power. Those who worry about personal privacy and identity--especially in this day of technologies that encroach upon these rights--still use Orwell's "Big Brother" language to discuss privacy issues. But the reality is that the age of a monolithic Big Brother is over. And yet the threats are perhaps even more likely to destroy the rights we've assumed were ours.Database Nation: The Death of Privacy in the 21st Century shows how, in these early years of the 21st century, advances in technology endanger our privacy in ways never before imagined. Direct marketers and retailers track our every purchase; surveillance cameras observe our movements; mobile phones will soon report our location to those who want to track us; government eavesdroppers listen in on private communications; misused medical records turn our bodies and our histories against us; and linked databases assemble detailed consumer profiles used to predict and influence our behavior. Privacy--the most basic of our civil rights--is in grave peril.Simson Garfinkel--journalist, entrepreneur, and international authority on computer security--has devoted his career to testing new technologies and warning about their implications. This newly revised update of the popular hardcover edition of Database Nation is his compelling account of how invasive technologies will affect our lives in the coming years. It's a timely, far-reaching, entertaining, and thought-provoking look at the serious threats to privacy facing us today. The book poses a disturbing question: how can we protect our basic rights to privacy, identity, and autonomy when technology is making invasion and control easier than ever before?Garfinkel's captivating blend of journalism, storytelling, and futurism is a call to arms. It will frighten, entertain, and ultimately convince us that we must take action now to protect our privacy and identity before it's too late.

Database System Concepts, 5/e, is intended for a first course in databases at the junior or senior undergraduate, or first-year graduate, level. In... addition to basic material for a first course, the text contains advanced material that can be used for course supplements, or as introductory material for an advanced course. The authors assume only a familiarity with basic data structures, computer organization, and a high-level programming language such as Java, C, or Pascal. Concepts are presented as intuitive descriptions, and many are based on the running example of a bank enterprise. Important theoretical results are covered, but formal proofs are omitted. In place of proofs, figures and examples are used to suggest why a result is true. The fundamental concepts and algorithms covered in the book are often based on those used in existing commercial or experimental database systems. The aim is to present these concepts and algorithms in a general setting that is not tied to one particular database system. Details of particular commercial database systems are discussed in the case studies which constitute Part 8 of the book. The fifth edition of Database System Concepts retains the overall style of prior editions while evolving the content and organization to reflect the changes that are occurring in the way databases are designed, managed, and used. Key Handles: • Early coverage of SQL in two chapters • Think of SQL as doing or creating Queries • Silberschatz uses a bank analogy throughout his text with Running Examples • Case studies are incorporated that represent a different database, this is in the last Part of the text • Focuses on cutting edge material, such as xml, web based database systems

Database System Concepts by Silberschatz, Korth and Sudarshan is now in its 6th edition and is one of the cornerstone texts of database education. It... presents the fundamental concepts of database management in an intuitive manner geared toward allowing students to begin working with databases as quickly as possible. The text is designed for a first course in databases at the junior/senior undergraduate level or the first year graduate level. It also contains additional material that can be used as supplements or as introductory material for an advanced course. Because the authors present concepts as intuitive descriptions, a familiarity with basic data structures, computer organization, and a high-level programming language are the only prerequisites. Important theoretical results are covered, but formal proofs are omitted. In place of proofs, figures and examples are used to suggest why a result is true.
