Gerald Vizenor gives life to traditional tribal stories by presenting them in a new perspective: he challenges the idyllic perception of rural life,... offering in its stead an unusual vision of survival in the cities-the sanctuaries for humans and animals. It is a tribal vision, a quest for liberation from forces that would deny the full realization of human possibilities. In this modern world his characters insist upon survival through an imaginative affirmation of the self.In Dead Voices Vizenor, using tales drawn from traditional tribal stories, illuminates the centuries of conflict between American Indians and Europeans, or "wordies." Bagese, a tribal woman transformed into a bear, has discovered a new urban world, and in a cycle of tales she describes this world from the perspective of animals-fleas, squirrels, mantis, crows, beavers, and finally Trickster, Vizenor’s central and unifying figure. The stories reveal unpleasant aspects of the dominate culture and American Indian culture such as the fur trade, the educational system, tribal gambling, reservation life, and in each the animals, who represent crossbloods, connect with their tribal traditions, often in comic fashion. As in his other fiction, Vizenor upsets our ideas of what fiction should be. His plot is fantastic; his story line is a roller-coaster ride requiring that we accept the idea of transformation, a key element in all his work. Unlike other Indian novelists, who use the novel as a means of cultural recovery, Vizenor finds the crossblood a cause for celebration.

DEAD WENDY is a sequence of elegiac poems, reflections on broken relationships and unlikely friendships, lyrics—sung, shouted, wept—of life’s raw... drama and ultimate tragedy. At heart, it is a love story. The narrative a tapestry of memories brought forth in three distinct voices as each character recounts events, the poems chronicle the last days of a young woman and the two men who loved her—and pursued her beyond death.

Edward Lytton Wheeler (1854-1885) was an American author. He was the creator of the adventures of Deadwood Dick series. He was born in Avoca, New York.... In 1877 his first novelette Hurricane Nell: The Girl Dead-Shot; or, The Queen of the Saddle and Lasso was published as No. 1 of Starr's Ten Cent Pocket Library. Deadwood Dick appeared in a series of stories, or "dime novels", published between 1877 and 1897. The name became so widely known in its time that it was used to advantage by several men who actually resided in Deadwood, South Dakota. Wheeler also ran a theatrical company for a short while during 1880. His other works include: Wild Edna: The Girl Bandit (1877) and The Border Bloodhounds (1877).

By dramatizing the intersection of self-interested capitalism and foundational violence in a mining camp in 1870s South Dakota, the HBO series Deadwood... reinvented the television Western. In this volume, Ina Rae Hark examines the groundbreaking series from a variety of angles: its relationship to past iterations of the genre on the small screen; its production context, both within the HBO paradigm and as part of the oeuvre of its creator and showrunner David Milch; and its thematics. Hark s comprehensive analysis also takes into account the series trademark use of language: both its unrelenting and ferocious obscenity and the brilliant complexity of its dialogue.Hark argues that Deadwood dissolves several traditional binaries of the Western genre. She demonstrates that while the show appears to pit individuality, savagery, lawlessness, social regulation, and civilization against each other, its narrative shows that apparent opposites are often analogues, and these forces can morph into allies very quickly. Indeed, perhaps the show s biggest paradox and most profound revelation is that self-interest and communitarianism cannot survive without each other. Hark closely analyzes Al Swearengen (as played by Ian McShane), the character who most embodies this paradox. A brutal cutthroat and purveyor of any vice that can turn him a profit, Swearengen nevertheless becomes the figure who forges connections among the camp s disparate individuals and shepherds their growth into a community.Deadwood is quintessentially, if unflatteringly, American in what it reveals about the dark underpinnings of national success rooted not in some renewed Eden but in a town that is, in the apt words of one of its promotional taglines, a hell of a place to make your fortune. Fans of the show and scholars of television history will enjoy Hark s analysis of Deadwood.
