In this insightful study, Braatz and Rowland examine how Wisconsin's Winnebago County negotiated nagging issues such as unemployment, debt relief, and... sluggish industry during the Great Depression, while attempting to understand the effect these times had on the people who called the county home. In the fall of 1929, the Great Depression descended hard upon Winnebago County. Although the county suffered debilitating effects from the economic collapse, the pain was not evenly distributed amongst this largely industrial region in the southern Fox Valley. At the northern edge of Winnebago County, the cities Neenah and Menasha, driven by the paper industry, suffered far less than Oshkosh, a city greatly reliant upon the woodworking mills lining the Fox River. When new housing disappeared, demand for Oshkosh's doors and window sashes went with it_and the jobs were quick to follow. The searing hardships caused by the Great Depression ravaged the economy and social fabric of the Winnebago County community.

Focusing on the spectacular disasters of the 1980s - the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the Chernobyl meltdown, the Challenger space shuttle explosion, the... Bhopal chemical plant release, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic - Ann Larabee examines how culture is reconstructed after disaster through victims' stories, media coverage, and official efforts to restore faith in technology. "Decade of Disaster" gives voice to a diverse cast of disaster participants, including Bhopal widows, people with AIDS, Chernobyl tourists, NASA administrators, international nuclear power authorities, and corporate spokespeople. Integrating sources ranging from official reports and scientific studies to news stories, movies, and science fiction novels, Larabee explores the fierce debates that followed these disasters, as government agencies, corporations, public interest groups, academics, and local communities fought to control their meaning. An incisive commentary at the intersection of cultural history and cultural studies, "Decade of Disaster" peels away layers and screens of rhetoric to expose the underlying process of cultural negotiation.

Why did the youthful optimism and openness of the sixties give way to Ronald Reagan and the spirit of conservative reaction--a spirit that remains... ascendant today? Drawing on a wide array of sources--including tabloid journalism, popular fiction, movies, and television shows--Philip Jenkins argues that a remarkable confluence of panics, scares, and a few genuine threats created a climate of fear that led to the conservative reaction. He identifies 1975 to 1986 as the watershed years. During this time, he says, there was a sharp increase in perceived threats to our security at home and abroad. At home, America seemed to be threatened by monstrous criminals--serial killers, child abusers, Satanic cults, and predatory drug dealers, to name just a few. On the international scene, we were confronted by the Soviet Union and its evil empire, by OPEC with its stranglehold on global oil, by the Ayatollahs who made hostages of our diplomats in Iran. Increasingly, these dangers began to be described in terms of moral evil. Rejecting the radicalism of the '60s, which many saw as the source of the crisis, Americans adopted a more pessimistic interpretation of human behavior, which harked back to much older themes in American culture. This simpler but darker vision ultimately brought us Ronald Reagan and the ascendancy of the political Right, which more than two decades later shows no sign of loosening its grip. Writing in his usual crisp and witty prose, Jenkins offers a truly original and persuasive account of a period that continues to fascinate the American public. It is bound to captivate anyone who lived through this period, as well as all those who want to understand the forces that transformed--and continue to define--the American political landscape.

Historians have long held that the Kennedy administration forged the American alliance with Israel as a way of courting political support from American... Jews. In contrast, the Eisenhower administration is believed to have considered Israel a political and strategic liability. In Decade of Transition, Abraham Ben-Zvi now shows that the Eisenhower years were an "incubation period" during which the ground-work was laid for the eventual American-Israeli alliance. As a result, President Kennedy's Israeli policy is understood as not the beginning, but a continuation of a process with foundations in the prior administration.Focusing on the period between Eisenhower's inauguration and Kennedy's landmark decision to sell the Hawk anti-aircraft missile to Israel, Ben-Zvi shows how the warming of American-Israeli diplomatic relations began with Eisenhower's second term. In his first administration, relations between the two countries reached a nadir with the Suez War, but in 1958, Israel's reaction to an intensifying crisis in Jordan caused Eisenhower to reevaluate Israel's strategic potential. Amid growing fears of unrest in the Middle East and a perceived Soviet threat, Israel could now become a useful ally and a new base of stability in the region. Ben-Zvi argues that both Eisenhower and Kennedy sought an alliance with Israel not to satisfy domestic political concerns, but to invest in Israel's growing strength and political stability. He analyzes Eisenhower's initial perceptions of Israel, and shows how they evolved along with his estimate of the increasing significance of the Middle East on the world stage. Ben-Zvi traces the process of deterrence and coercion used by both presidents to transform Israel into a strategic asset for the United States, from American insistence on inspecting Israel's nuclear weapons facilities to failed attempts to influence Israel's policy on Palestinian refugees.Thoroughly researched and drawing on thousands of documents-many only recently made public- Decade of Transition provides a significant reevaluation of the nature and origins of the American-Israeli relationship and the shaping of the modern Middle East.

Only by understanding Central and Eastern Europe's turbulent history during the first half of the twentieth century can we hope to make sense of the... conflicts and crises that have followed World War II and, after that, the collapse of Soviet-controlled state socialism. Ivan Berend looks closely at the fateful decades preceding World War II and at twelve countries whose absence from the roster of major players was enough in itself, he says, to precipitate much of the turmoil. As waves of modernization swept over Europe, the less developed countries on the periphery tried with little or no success to imitate Western capitalism and liberalism. Instead they remained, as Berend shows, rural, agrarian societies notable for the tenacious survival of feudal and aristocratic institutions. In that context of frustration and disappointment, rebellion was inevitable. Berend leads the reader skillfully through the maze of social, cultural, economic, and political changes in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Austria, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and the Soviet Union, showing how every path ended in dictatorship and despotism by the start of World War II.

Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron was the first great masterpiece of European storytelling; this brilliant new translation by J. G. Nichols faithfully... captures its timeless vitality in readable and natural English. In the summer of 1348, with the plague ravaging Florence, ten young men and women take refuge in the countryside. There they entertain one another for ten days with tales of love, death, and deception, featuring a host of characters from lascivious clergymen and mad kings to devious lovers and false miracle-makers. Named from the Greek for "ten days," the Decameron draws on ancient mythology, historical events, and everyday life, blending them into a treasury of tragic, comic, and outrageously bawdy stories that have influenced writers and entertained readers for more than six centuries.

Decedents' Estates: Cases and Materials, Second Edition offers a current and refined look at the most recent developments in the law of wills, trusts,... and estates while retaining the structure and clarity of the first edition. To present a focused overview of the most recent changes occurring within the field, the book uses Tool Bars that introduce each chapter, comprehensive statutory analysis relevant to each topic, and insightful Notes expanding upon each case. The authors discuss the current posturing of states adopting the Uniform Trust Code, the most recent amendments to the Uniform Probate Code, the effect of the federal estate tax laws, and the most modern views on constantly expanding issues such as spousal elective share, non-biological heirship, same-sex inheritance rights, and the proliferation of non-probate transfers. The authors also respond to the effect of the ongoing economic collapse by integrating a comprehensive overview of the rules of prudent investing and their significance to the modern trust and estate practitioner. The second edition offers a refreshing insight on what is new, but it also respects what continues to motivate so much change family. Through an introductory hypothetical, Chapter One of the text introduces a myriad of issues that every family will confront upon the death of a family member, and that every professor will address in a course on decedents' estates. Each chapter then incorporates and dissects these issues, from the formulae underlying the rules of intestacy in Chapter Two and the statutory requirements of wills in Chapter Three, to government restraints on the transfer of wealth in Chapter Five, the utilization of trusts in Chapter Seven, and the planning for incapacity in Chapter Eight. From start to finish, the text offers a modern perspective on an ever-changing area of law that every professor and student of the subject must recognize and consider. With a variety of cases, statutes, forms, and web-based resources, this text offers a clear and comprehensive resource for professors to engage these considerations, and for students to enter the field of wills, trusts and estates with clarity and confidence.

Deceit and Denial details the attempts by the chemical and lead industries to deceive Americans about the dangers that their deadly products present to... workers, the public, and consumers. Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner pursued evidence steadily and relentlessly, interviewed the important players, investigated untapped sources, and uncovered a bruising story of cynical and cruel disregard for health and human rights. This resulting exposé is full of startling revelations, provocative arguments, and disturbing conclusions--all based on remarkable research and information gleaned from secret industry documents. This book reveals for the first time the public relations campaign that the lead industry undertook to convince Americans to use its deadly product to paint walls, toys, furniture, and other objects in America's homes, despite a wealth of information that children were at risk for serious brain damage and death from ingesting this poison. This book highlights the immediate dangers ordinary citizens face because of the relentless failure of industrial polluters to warn, inform, and protect their workers and neighbors. It offers a historical analysis of how corporate control over scientific research has undermined the process of proving the links between toxic chemicals and disease. The authors also describe the wisdom, courage, and determination of workers and community members who continue to voice their concerns in spite of vicious opposition. Readable, pathbreaking, and revelatory, Deceit and Denial provides crucial answers to questions of dangerous environmental degradation, escalating corporate greed, and governmental disregard for its citizens' safety and health.

Drawing on the expertise of some of the most innovative minds in the field of leisure studies from across Canada, Decentring Work questions how and why... we have come to value paid employment as the marker of social success and individual self-worth and, more provocatively, investigates the role that leisure might play in its stead. The contributors probe the dimensions of marginalization and oppression experienced by groups such as women living in poverty, aboriginal youth, new immigrants, and older adults, and show how leisure can be a vital element in confronting issues in the social construction of homelessness, incarceration, dementia care, disability, and ethnicity. Using a mix of approaches from in-depth empirical studies to more conceptually driven discussions, the chapters in Decentring Work weave together effectively into a treatise on notions of work, leisure, power, and social change. This new collection is essential reading for anyone in the field of leisure studies, recreation, or social work who is interested in the role that leisure can and should play in reshaping human and community development.

Deception is a traditional component of political and military conflict. Indeed, many argue that it is intrinsic to all human interaction. It is... sometimes mistakenly confused with unintentional confusion or misinformation. Disinformation, intentional deception, should not be confused with misinformation. Deception depends on two criteria: first, it is intentional; and, second, it is designed to gain an advantage for the practitioner.1 Deception in the forms of concealment and activity designed to mislead is common in nature. Protective coloration serves to protect some flora and fauna, either by making them difficult to see or by causing them to resemble something of little interest to predators. Some animals will feign injury to lure predators away from nests or offspring. Students of deception note these examples as evidence of the utility and effectiveness of disinformation even beyond the human experience.
