No two writing situations are exactly the same and skilled writers, like skilled painters, must develop the know-how to represent the objects of their... writing as part of a flexible art. This special art of writing lies hidden between grammar--the well-formedness of sentences--and genre--the capacity of texts to perform culturally holistic communicative functions (e.g., the memo, the strategic report, the letter to the editor). Concealed between grammar and genre, this less visible art of writing is what Kaufer and Butler call "representational composition." Texts within this hidden art are best viewed not primarily as grammatical units or as genre functions, but as bearers of design elements stimulating imagistic, narrative, and information-rich worlds, and as an invitation to readers to explore and interact with them. This volume presents a systematic study of the principles that underlie writing as representational composition. Drawing from student models derived from a studio method, the authors use each chapter to present a different aspect of what unfolds--across the course of the book--into a cumulative, interactive, and unified body of representational principles underlying the design of texts. They reveal what makes the textual representations achieved by expert writers worthwhile, and, at the same time, difficult for novice writers to reproduce. Extending the framework of their 1996 volume, Rhetoric and the Arts of Design, into a realm of textual design, this volume will interest students and instructors of writing, rhetoric, and information design.

Mainstream media, often known simply as MSM, have not yet disappeared in a digital takeover of the media landscape. But the long-dominant... MSM--television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and books--have had to respond to emergent digital media. Newspapers have interactive Web sites; television broadcasts over the Internet; books are published in both electronic and print editions. In Designing Media, design guru Bill Moggridge examines connections and conflicts between old and new media, describing how the MSM have changed and how new patterns of media consumption are emerging. The book features interviews with thirty-seven significant figures in both traditional and new forms of mass communication; interviewees range from the publisher of the New York Times to the founder of Twitter. We learn about innovations in media that rely on contributions from a crowd (or a community), as told by Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales and Craigslist's Craig Newmark; how the band OK Go built a following using YouTube; how real-time connections between dispatchers and couriers inspired Twitter; how a BusinessWeek blog became a quarterly printed supplement to the magazine; and how e-readers have evolved from Rocket eBook to QUE. Ira Glass compares the intimacy of radio to that of the Internet; the producer of PBS's Frontline supports the program's investigative journalism by putting documentation of its findings online; and the developers of Google's Trendalyzer software describe its beginnings as animations that accompanied lectures about social and economic development in rural Africa. At the end of each chapter, Moggridge comments on the implications for designing media. Designing Media is illustrated with hundreds of images, with color throughout. A DVD accompanying the book includes excerpts from all of the interviews, and the material can be browsed at www.designing-media.com.www.designing-media.comInterviews with [updated by Moggridge 2/1]]Chris Anderson, Rich Archuleta, Blixa Bargeld, Colin Callender, Fred Deakin, Martin Eberhard, David Fanning, Jane Friedman, Mark Gerzon, Ira Glass, Nat Hunter, Chad Hurley, Joel Hyatt, Alex Juhasz, Jorge Just, Alex MacLean, Bob Mason, Roger McNamee, Jeremy Merle, Craig Newmark, Bruce Nussbaum, Alice Rawsthorn, Anna Rosling Rönnlund, Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling, Paul Saffo, Jesse Scanlon, DJ Spooky, Neil Stevenson, Arthur Sulzberger Jr., Shinichi Takemura, James Truman, Jimmy Wales, Tim Westergren, Ev Williams, Erin Zhu, Mark Zuckerberg

Mobile is a powerful new tool for supporting organizational performance, including a wide-variety of learning opportunities including innovation,... collaboration, research, and design. Mobile generates new products, services, and helps solve problems. Whether providing needed tools, augmenting learning, or connecting individuals, mobile devices are empowering individuals and organizations.Designing mLearning is a hands-on resource that presents step-by-step guidance for designing, delivering, and deploying mobile solutions, covering both the background model and pragmatic considerations for successfully navigating mobile projects. The book takes an integrated approach to mobile learning regardless of the device used. Written by Dr. Clark Quinn, a noted leader in the mLearning revolution, Designing mLearning debunks commonly held myths about mLearning, defines the myriad opportunities for mobile, contains real-world, illustrative examples, includes implementation concerns, and places mobile learning in an overall strategic plan.Designing mLearning is written for instructional designers, developers, media experts, managers, and anyone with responsibility for supporting performance in organizations. While the focus is on the design of solutions, the book addresses the critical organizational issues to assist the larger agenda of mobilizing the organization. The information outlined in this groundbreaking guide can be applied across the mobile device spectrum and provides a systematic and integrated suite of conceptual frameworks to guide designers to pragmatic and effective solutions."Quinn takes you by the hand and leads you carefully and comprehensively through the m-learning maze of devices, models, examples, and designs, at the same time demonstrating that mobile learning is more than being about learning, but is also about performance."--Jane Hart, founder & CEO, Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies"Stop thinking mLearning is miniaturized eLearning. Just as digital video has enabled entirely new forms of entertainment and communication, mLearning enables powerful new (and old) performance solutions at very low costs. Clark omits the deafening hyperbole and delivers today's best source of clear, complete, and useful mLearning guidance for us all."--Michael Allen, CEO, Allen Interactions"The future is mobile. It will rock you more than the web did. And Clark Quinn has written the missing manual."--Jay Cross, CEO, Internet Time, and author, Informal Learning"Those of us in learning and development know we spend a disproportionate amount of time on formal training, missing opportunities to support workers where real learning occurs: in work, every day. With a wealth of examples, Clark Quinn provides a clear, useful guidebook for using 21st-century tools to support our performers as they enact their work and apply new learning."--Jane Bozarth, Ed.D., author, Social Media for Trainers and Better Than Bullet Points"Yes, this is a handy book about mobile learning and support. But it's also a thoughtful nudge towards rethinking what we mean when we say we are educators."--Allison Rossett, San Diego State University"Clark Quinn sets the pace for a swift race toward mobile everything. His thought-leadership and focus on solutions that work make him the one to watch, to read, and to learn from now!"--Marcia Conner, advisor in business culture and collaboration, co-author of The New Social Learning: A Guide to Transforming Organization Through Social Media

This anthology provides the first comprehensive and comparative international overview of effective approaches to "designing out" crime from products... and services. Prominent criminologists and scholars of design analyze the lessons derived from a wide range of successful design-against-crime initiatives worldwide, including (among many others): technologies that have dramatically decreased cell phone "cloning" in the U.S.; the fitting of immobilizers to prevent car theft; adoption of tamper-resistant product packaging; the redesign of banknotes to block counterfeiting; account verification technology to minimize credit card fraud; and the use of hard-to-shatter glass to reduce injuries in bar brawls. Chapter topics include: the role of governments in modifying criminogenic products, by editors Ronald V. Clarke (Rutgers University) and Graeme R. Newman (SUNY at Albany); the corporate sector's role in designing out crime, by staff of the Institute of Public Policy Research (London); designing out crime from the U.K. vehicle licensing system, by Gloria Laycock and Barry Webb (Jill Dando Institute, University College London); promoting design against crime, by Simon Learmount (Judge Institute of Management, University of Cambridge); the fundamentals of crime-proofing design, by Rachel Cooper, Andrew Wootton and Caroline Davey (Design and Innovation Group, University of Salford) and Mike Press (Robert Gordon University, Gray's School of Art); and a plan for security coding of electronic products, by the editors.
