Many classroom tasks and texts require additional cognitive skills beyond the reading strategies usually described in the literature on content area... reading. This book will help you design effective activities and assessments that foster the academic thinking skills and academic language your students need to understand challenging content area concepts taught in school. The chapters are organized into three parts. Part I explains the importance of developing academic thinking skills and the key role that academic language plays in this development. Part I also discusses the key components of assessment and instruction as they relate to the development of academic thinking. Part II contains the activities, grouped into chapters by 12 thinking skills: * Analyzing * Comparing * Categorizing and Classifying * Identifying Cause and Effect * Problem Solving * Persuading * Empathizing * Synthesizing * Interpreting * Evaluating * Communicating * Applying Each skill-based chapter describes an academic thinking skill, offers a list of academic language terms related to the skill, and provides activities that you can use to strengthen students' use of the skill. All the activities tap into students' multiple intelligences; four intelligences, in particular, are emphasized-interpersonal, visual, kinesthetic, and musical-because of their proven effectiveness in how children learn. Part III provides reproducible blackline masters that complement the activities in Part II. The appendixes offer additional multiple intelligence activities, a list of possible questions and controversial topics for use in classroom discussions and in several of the book's activities, and familiar songs for designing music-based activities. If you have students who struggle with abstract concepts, academic language, and complex reading and writing tasks, this handbook is for you.The International Reading Association is the world's premier organization of literacy professionals. Developing a Dream Destination is an interpretive history of tourism and tourism policy development in Hawai`i from the 1960s to the twenty-first... century. Part 1 looks at the many changes in tourism since statehood (1959) and tourism's imprint on Hawai`i. Part 2 reviews the development of public policy toward tourism, beginning with a story of the planning process that started around 1970--a full decade before the first comprehensive State Tourism Plan was crafted and implemented. It also examines state government policies and actions taken relative to the taxation of tourism, tourism promotion, convention center development and financing, the environment, Honolulu County's efforts to improve Waikiki, and how the Neighbor Islands have coped with explosive tourism growth. Along the way, author James Mak offers interpretations of what has worked, what has not, and why. He concludes with a chapter on the lessons learned while developing a dream destination over the past half century.

2001 Winner of the Phillip E. Frandson Award for Literature in Continuing Education"An absolutely indispensable trove of practical, concrete ideas for... teaching and training adults. Enough theorizing and mythologizing! This is the real stuff!"—Laurent A. Parks Daloz, associate director, the Whidbey Institute, and author of Mentor: Guiding the Journey of Adult Learners"This book gives us educators and trainers of adults a solid framework for intentionally incorporating into our practice what we believe to be a central tenet of what we do—help learners develop and change."—Rosemary S. Caffarella, professor, Division of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, University of Northern Colorado, and coauthor of Learning in Adulthood: A Comprehensive GuideToday's adult educators recognize that it is no longer sufficient for teachers to teach and trainers to train. This practical guide shows how to encourage learning and development while helping adult learners to become more aware of their personal growth and change. It not only offers a rationale for focusing on the experience and development of adult learners, but also presents a theoretical and conceptual framework of the intentions that guide educators. The authors provide nearly seventy instructional activities--some of which can be done in a single session and others that can be done in a series of sessions or an entire course. These flexible activities are organized according to their focus on a particular learning strategy. No matter the content or setting, readers can select any activity and customize it to suit their developmental and instructional objectives. Most important, Developing Adult Learners highlights the compelling voices of teachers and students who have discovered the excitement of growing and changing through learning. It is full of pragmatic advice for faculty members, part-time instructors, workplace educators, leadership trainers, and anyone dedicated to helping adult learners achieve rich and rewarding experiences.

An essential companion for those working in adult literacy, this book is designed to assist and support people who plan, develop, and deliver literacy... programs and initiatives for adults. Using a mix of theory and practical real-life examples, the book sets out some of the main concepts of literacy and approaches to adult literacy education used throughout the world. These are then used to show the wide variety of different ways to develop and manage adult literacy programs.Logically structured into sections, the book sets the scene for beginning to work on adult literacy. It presents the four key concepts of literacy that have shaped much of literacy learning over the last 30 years and the associated approaches. Preparation and planning for literacy learning is also covered, followed by a series of practical guides. The authors demonstrate the huge importance of literacy and its power to improve lives, while also showing that the role literacy plays in development is not a simple one and is never a quick fix solution. Literacy initiatives are complex and must take into account the local context, resources, scale, and most importantly the purposes of learners, the local community, and other key stakeholders.

This issue explores the growing field of adult degree programs and considers the theoretical underpinnings of such programs and hands-on issues as... curriculum, faculty, marketing, technology, financing, and accreditation, all with a goal of informing and equipping both scholars and practitioners.More and more adults who have been out of school for many years have turned to colleges and universities to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees that will make them competitive in the workforce, fulfill a professional requirement, or enrich them intellectually. Higher education institutions and many private organizations have responded to this demand by creating innovative degree programs aimed specifically at mature learners, students who want to self-design their educational programs and do not hesitate to change institutions if they believe their needs are not being met. This explosive growth in adult degree programs is largely the result of distance education technologies and the Internet. Other significant factors include the potential such programs have for providing additional revenue streams for institutions, the fierce competition from the private sector and other higher education institutions, and the rising interest in interdisciplinary programs. This is the 103rd volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education.
