Using this accessible book and CD method, anyone can learn to improvise to familiar tunes! Developing Musicianship through Improvisation offers an... approach to learning music that is similar to the process for learning a language. Just as it is possible for everyone to engage in meaningful conversation, it is also possible for everyone to engage in meaningful improvisation. Throughout these materials you will build a vocabulary of tonal patterns, melodic phrases, rhythm patterns, and rhythm phrases you will apply in many ways. In the course of this study, you will read and write music, connecting your improvisation to meaningful experiences with notation. Each unit in Developing Musicianship through Improvisation is based on a familiar tune with six parts: 1) Repertoire 2) Patterns and Progressions 3) Improvising Melodic Phrases 4) Seven Skills for Learning to Improvise 5) Reading and Writing 6) Learning Characteristic Solos. It is never too late to begin learning tunes and harmony by ear. This process is at the heart of improvisation, and it is perhaps the most exciting aspect of Developing Musicianship through Improvisation.

This outstanding contribution to market research focuses on the upfront activities and ideas for new product and service development. A central theme of... this book is that there is, or should be, a constant struggle going on in every organization, business, and system between delivering feature-rich versions of products and services using extravagant engineering and delivering low-cost versions of products and services using frugal engineering. A number of powerful concepts and tools are presented in the book to facilitate new product development. For example, three templates are featured that facilitate new product and service development. The FAD (features, attributes, and design) template is used to identify the features and attributes that can be used for product and service differentiation. The Ten Ten planning process contains two templates: an Organizational and Industry Analysis template and the Business Plan Overview template. These two templates coupled with the FAD template can be used to develop a full-blown business plan. Entrepreneurship, technology and product life cycles, product and service versioning, product line optimization, creativity, lock-in real options, business valuation, and project management topics are also covered.

What is number sense? How do children develop number sense? What are the most effective teaching methods and resources? How can research findings inform... classroom practice? This fascinating book, designed as a companion volume to Teaching Number Sense for the later primary and early secondary years, will help you answer these questions, and more. Reflecting recent research into children's mathematical learning, Julia Anghileri focuses on the connections that help to develop understanding, such as how counting underpins many calculating methods and the way mental working and informal jotting can support problem solving. She uses a balance of theory and practice to help teachers deal with the problems and issues they encounter on a day-to-day basis in mathematics teaching, including examples for use specifically in the classroom. This book will prove essential reading for trainee and established mathematics teachers alike.

This text offers a comprehensive discussion of philosophies that are relevant to the conceptualization and development of the knowledge base and... discipline of nursing. Coverage progresses from classical philosophy to the rationalism of Descartes, the roots of modern science in British empiricism, the evolution of modern science, and the concept of interpretive inquiry. Also included are chapters on the knowledge-practice connection and models for nursing knowledge development. This book explores how philosophy shapes aspects of nursing and provides students with a much richer and fuller understanding of how nursing works, how it can be approached most effectively, and how it might be shaped to advance in the future.

Patient/client care is swinging away from the institution and into the community. This is true not only for occupational therapy but also for many... health care providers. Just as mental health and illness and the concerns of humane care established the origins of occupational therapists, these same concerns have ushered a return to the community as a favored site for practice. The text covers building a foundation within a community, program development, program evaluation and program examples for children, adolescents and adults.

The authors--a once-skeptical chemistry professor and a director of assessment sensitive to the concerns of her teacher colleagues--use a personal voice... to describe the basics of outcomes-based assessment. The purpose of the book is to empower faculty to develop and maintain ownership of assessment by articulating the learning outcomes and evidence of learning that are appropriate for their courses and programs. The authors offer readers a guide to the not always tidy process of articulating expectations, defining criteria and standards, and aligning course content consistently with desired outcomes. The wealth of examples and stories, including accounts of successes and false starts, provide a realistic and honest guide to what's involved in the institutionalization of assessment.

A nuanced critique of how the World Bank encourages gender norms through its policies, Developing Partnerships argues that financial institutions are... key players in the global enforcement of gender and family expectations.By combining analysis of documents produced and sponsored by the World Bank with interviews of World Bank staffers and case studies, Kate Bedford presents a detailed examination of gender and sexuality in the policies of the world's largest and most influential development institution. Looking concurrently at economic and gender policy, Bedford connects reform of markets to reform of masculinities, loan agreements for export promotion to pamphlets for indigenous adolescents advising daily genital bathing, and attempts to strengthen institutions after the Washington Consensus to efforts to promote loving couplehood in response to economic crisis. In doing so, she reveals the shifting relationships between development and sexuality and the ways in which gender policy impacts debates about the future of neoliberalism.Providing a multilayered account of how gender-aware policies are conceived and implemented by the World Bank, Developing Partnerships demonstrates as well how institutional practices shape development.
