In this bestselling textbook, contributors describe theories of normal human development advanced by such pioneers as Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, Jean... Piaget, Nancy Chodorow, Daniel Levinson, Erik Erikson, and Margaret Mahler. Beginning with infancy, toddlerhood, and preschool, each chapter examines corresponding ideologies concerning maturation and development in middle childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age, while acknowledging that no one theory can encompass all aspects of human development. In-depth analyses of the psychology and sociology of development provide educators and practitioners with insights into the specific social contexts of human behavior and help identify variables and deviations. This second edition features up-to-date empirical information, including additional studies on diverse populations, and a new chapter on attachment theory, a growing area of interest for today's clinicians.

This book brings together new scholarship that expands and refines the concept of self-authorship across cultures. It adopts a... constructive-developmental approach to self-evolution that emphasizes the interaction of personal characteristics and contextual influences on individuals’ construction of knowledge, identities, and relationships. Individual chapters cover subjects from populations as varied as Dutch students, male and female Bedouin and Jewish adolescents, African American male and female adolescents in economically depressed areas of the US, Latino/a college students grappling with ethnic identity and dissonance, Australian college females preparing to be childcare workers, and finally a comparative study of Japanese and U.S. college students’ epistemic beliefs. The book concludes by addressing questions about the challenges and opportunities involved in developing a valid measure of self-authorship that is less time and expertise-intensive than the in-depth one-on-one interview employed until now; and offering an outline of future theoretical and methodological research needed to further our understanding of self-evolution in general and self-authorship in particular.

Evelyne Huber and John D. Stephens offer the most systematic examination to date of the origins, character, effects, and prospects of generous welfare... states in advanced industrial democracies in the post—World War II era. They demonstrate that prolonged government by different parties results in markedly different welfare states, with strong differences in levels of poverty and inequality. Combining quantitative studies with historical qualitative research, the authors look closely at nine countries that achieved high degrees of social protection through different types of welfare regimes: social democratic states, Christian democratic states, and "wage earner" states. In their analysis, the authors emphasize the distribution of influence between political parties and labor movements, and also focus on the underestimated importance of gender as a basis for mobilization.Building on their previous research, Huber and Stephens show how high wages and generous welfare states are still possible in an age of globalization and trade competition.

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of development and the developing world. Written in a clear and accessible way, it... introduces students to the key theoretical perspectives and conceptual frameworks in development studies, and provides a guide to contemporary issues and current debates. The early part of the book focuses on definitions and theories of development, providing a historical account of the evolution of development theory and practice in the last few decades - through the impasse in development studies in the 1980s to the consolidation of the neo-liberal consensus across the world. Subsequent chapters analyse key development strategies - the role of the state and of international trade - in the context of a number of contemporary problems, including the spread of HIV in Africa, the use of GM technology in agriculture and the role of education, population growth and urbanization. In doing so, Kambhampati highlights the interdependence between the causes and consequences of development, emphasizing why the development problem has been hard both to identify and to solve.Development and the Developing World will be an essential text for undergraduate and graduate students coming to the subject for the first time and taking courses in development studies, globalization and international relations.

* Comprehensive examination of roles private sector plays in development* Collection part of the Kumarian Press and Oxfam Development in Practice... readers series Corporations have a major impact on the lives of people in developing countries. Not only do they determine the shape of the international economy but many private companies now provide essential social services that were previously the responsibility of government. The growth of corporate power has generated a backlash as companies are held to account for the social and environmental impacts of their business. The resulting array of new initiatives coming under the term ‘corporate social responsibility’ has many implications for development. There are heated debates as to whether these initiatives should remain voluntary, or form part of tighter international regulation of business. Corporations clearly have the potential to contribute to sustainable economic growth in developing countries. However, their business can also undermine people’s livelihoods. Contributors to this volume examine the impact of the private sector on development, whether through core business practices, corporate responsibility endeavors, or philanthropic activities. Bringing together both analytical chapters and case studies ranging from El Salvador, to Kenya, to Timor-Leste, this book focuses on how the private sector can do less harm, and even do considerable good by fostering equitable development. Other contributors: Stephanie Ware Barrientos, Jem Bendell, Catherine Dolan, Sumi Dhanarajan, Deborah Doane, Niamh Garvey, David Hall, April Linton, Lienda Loebis, Emanuele Lobina, Robin de la Motte, Ben Moxham, Julian Oram, Peter Newell, Carolina Quinteros, Leopoldo Rodriguez-Boetsch, Hubert Schmitz, Sally Smith, Anne Tallontire, and Peter Utting.

Development Anthropology is a detailed examination of how anthropology is used in international development projects. Written from a practitioner's... standpoint, and containing numerous examples and case studies, the book aims to provide students with a comprehensive overview of what development anthropologists do, how they do it, and what problems they encounter in their work. The first part of the book looks at the evolution of both applied anthropology and international development, and how these have been involved with each other since the 1950s. The second, and main, part of the book focuses on how development projects work, and how anthropology is used in their design, implementation, and evaluation. The final section of the book looks at how both development and anthropology must change in order to be more effective. An appendix outlines what students should do to plan a career in development anthropology.

By the winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Economics,  an essential and  paradigm-altering framework for understanding economic development--for both... rich and poor--in the twenty-first century. Freedom, Sen argues, is both the end and most efficient means of sustaining economic life and the key to securing the general welfare of the world's entire population. Releasing the idea of individual freedom from association with any particular historical, intellectual, political, or religious tradition, Sen clearly demonstrates its current applicability and possibilities. In the new global economy, where, despite unprecedented increases in overall opulence, the contemporary world denies elementary freedoms to vast numbers--perhaps even the majority of people--he concludes, it is still possible to practically and optimistically restain a sense of social accountability. Development as Freedom is essential reading.
