Statistical Mechanics is the study of systems where the number of interacting particles becomes infinite. In the last fifty years tremendous advances... have been made which have required the invention of entirely new fields of mathematics such as quantum groups and affine Lie algebras. They have engendered remarkable discoveries concerning non-linear differential equations and algebraic geometry, and have produced profound insights in both condensed matter physics and quantum field theory. Unfortunately, none of these advances are taught in graduate courses in statistical mechanics. This book is an attempt to correct this problem. It begins with theorems on the existence (and lack) of order for crystals and magnets and with the theory of critical phenomena, and continues by presenting the methods and results of fifty years of analytic and computer computations of phase transitions. It concludes with an extensive presentation of four of the most important of exactly solved problems: the Ising, 8 vertex, hard hexagon and chiral Potts models.

In the past two decades, scientists have made remarkable progress in understanding stars. This graduate-level textbook provides a systematic,... self-contained and lucid introduction to the physical processes and fundamental equations underlying all aspects of stellar astrophysics. The timely volume provides authoritative astronomical discussions as well as rigorous mathematical derivations and illuminating explanations of the physical concepts involved. In addition to traditional topics such as stellar interiors and atmospheres, the reader is introduced to stellar winds, mass accretion, nuclear astrophysics, weak interactions, novae, supernovae, pulsars, neutron stars and black holes. A concise introduction to general relativity is also included. At the end of each chapter, exercises and helpful hints are provided to test and develop the understanding of the student. As the first advanced textbook on stellar astrophysics for nearly three decades, this long-awaited volume provides a thorough introduction for graduate students and an up-to-date review for researchers.

This groundbreaking book extends traditional approaches of risk measurement and portfolio optimization by combining distributional models with risk or... performance measures into one framework. Throughout these pages, the expert authors explain the fundamentals of probability metrics, outline new approaches to portfolio optimization, and discuss a variety of essential risk measures. Using numerous examples, they illustrate a range of applications to optimal portfolio choice and risk theory, as well as applications to the area of computational finance that may be useful to financial engineers.

First published in 1999, Advanced Strategic Planning explained why planning was so important to carrying out the church's mission. Now in its second... edition, this practical resource offers - a nine-step strategic thinking and acting model - useful ideas for developing a strategy - diagrams to help illustrate concepts - a new chapter on spiritual formation This updated edition places a stronger emphasis on disciplemaking and clarifies answers to nine fundamental ministry questions. The methods in this book are proven to work, having already helped many churches articulate their vision and implement their mission.

This systematic exploration of real-world stress analysis has been completely revised and updated to reflect state-of-the-art methods and applications... now in use throughout the fields of aeronautical, civil, and mechanical engineering and engineering mechanics. Distinguished by its exceptional visual interpretations of the solutions, it offers an in-depth coverage of the subjects for students and practicing engineers. The authors carefully balance comprehensive treatments of solid mechanics, elasticity, and computer-oriented numerical methods. In addition, a wide range of fully worked illustrative examples and an extensive problem sets–many taken directly from engineering practice–have been incorporated. Key additions to the Fourth Edition of this highly acclaimed textbook are materials dealing with failure theories, fracture mechanics, compound cylinders, numerical approaches, energy and variational methods, buckling of stepped columns, common shell types, and more. Contents include stress, strain and stress-strain relations, problems in elasticity, static and dynamic failure criteria, bending of beams and torsion of bars, finite difference and finite element methods, axisymmetrically loaded members, beams on elastic foundations, energy methods, elastic stability, plastic behavior of materials, stresses in plates and shells, and selected references to expose readers to the latest information in the field.

This book provides a broad and comprehensive coverage of the theoretical, experimental, and numerical techniques employed in the field of stress... analysis. Designed to provide a clear transition from the topics of elementary to advanced mechanics of materials. Its broad range of coverage allows instructors to easily select many different topics for use in one or more courses. The highly readable writing style and mathematical clarity of the first edition are continued in this edition. Major revisions in this edition include: an expanded coverage of three-dimensional stress/strain transformations; additional topics from the theory of elasticity; examples and problems which test the mastery of the prerequisite elementary topics; clarified and additional topics from advanced mechanics of materials; new sections on fracture mechanics and structural stability; a completely rewritten chapter on the finite element method; a new chapter on finite element modeling techniques employed in practice when using commercial FEM software; and a significant increase in the number of end of chapter exercise problems some of which are oriented towards computer applications.

Help your students refine basic swimming strokes, master competitive strokes, and discover the art of "watermanship" with Advanced Swimming: Steps... to Success. This second-level swimming book, by master teacher David Thomas, continues the progression started in Swimming: Steps to Success--part of the Steps to Success Activity Series, the most extensively researched and carefully developed set of sport skill instruction books ever published.Offer swimmers 18 proven steps for mastering advanced skills. In Advanced Swimming: Steps to Success, swimmers climb 18 additional steps to advanced swimming success. This unique skill progression reviews and improves the crawl and breast strokes, introduces the new competitive back and butterfly strokes, and helps swimmers learn competitive strokes and turns. Each step:- explains why the concept or skill is important,- identifies the keys to proper technique,- helps swimmers correct common errors,- explains how to practice each skill in realistic ways,- lists specific performance goals for each drill,- gives swimmers a summary checklist for evaluating proper technique, and- lets swimmers proceed at their own pace.In addition, this advanced book takes swimmers through the evolution of the breaststroke, the sidestroke, the less commonly known overhand sidestroke, and the series of trudgen strokes.See all the titles available in the Steps to Success Series.
