Differential geometry has a long, wonderful history. It has found relevance in areas ranging from machinery design to the classification of... four-manifolds to the creation of theories of nature's fundamental forces to the study of DNA. This book studies the differential geometry of surfaces with the goal of helping students make the transition from the compartmentalized courses in a standard university curriculum to a type of mathematics that is a unified whole. It mixes together geometry, calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, complex variables, the calculus of variations, and notions from the sciences. Differential geometry is not just for mathematics majors. It is also for students in engineering and the sciences. The mix of ideas offer students the opportunity to visualize concepts through the use of computer algebra systems such as Maple. The book emphasizes that this visualization goes hand-in-hand with the understanding of the mathematics behind the computer construction. Students will not only see geodesics on surfaces, but they will also observe the effect that an abstract result such as the Clairaut relation can have on geodesics. Furthermore, the book shows how the equations of motion of particles constrained to surfaces are actually types of geodesics. The book is rich in results and exercises that form a continuous spectrum, from those that depend on calculation to proofs that are quite abstract.

Bundles, connections, metrics and curvature are the 'lingua franca' of modern differential geometry and theoretical physics. This book will supply a... graduate student in mathematics or theoretical physics with the fundamentals of these objects. Many of the tools used in differential topology are introduced and the basic results about differentiable manifolds, smooth maps, differential forms, vector fields, Lie groups, and Grassmanians are all presented here. Other material covered includes the basic theorems about geodesics and Jacobi fields, the classification theorem for flat connections, the definition of characteristic classes, and also an introduction to complex and Kahler geometry.Differential Geometry uses many of the classical examples from, and applications of, the subjects it covers, in particular those where closed form expressions are available, to bring abstract ideas to life. Helpfully, proofs are offered for almost all assertions throughout. All of the introductory material is presented in full and this is the only such source with the classical examples presented in detail.

The study of homogeneous spaces provides excellent insights into both differential geometry and Lie groups. In geometry, for instance, general theorems... and properties will also hold for homogeneous spaces, and will usually be easier to understand and to prove in this setting. For Lie groups, a significant amount of analysis either begins with or reduces to analysis on homogeneous spaces, frequently on symmetric spaces. For many years and for many mathematicians, Sigurdur Helgason's classic Differential Geometry, Lie Groups, and Symmetric Spaces has been--and continues to be--the standard source for this material. Helgason begins with a concise, self-contained introduction to differential geometry. He then introduces Lie groups and Lie algebras, including important results on their structure. This sets the stage for the introduction and study of symmetric spaces, which form the central part of the book. The text concludes with the classification of symmetric spaces by means of the Killing-Cartan classification of simple Lie algebras over $\mathbf{C}$ and Cartan's classification of simple Lie algebras over $\mathbf{R}$. The excellent exposition is supplemented by extensive collections of useful exercises at the end of each chapter. All the problems have either solutions or substantial hints, found at the back of the book. For this latest edition, Helgason has made corrections and added helpful notes and useful references. The sequels to the present book are published in the AMS's Mathematical Surveys and Monographs Series: Groups and Geometric Analysis, Volume 83, and Geometric Analysis on Symmetric Spaces, Volume 39. Sigurdur Helgason was awarded the Steele Prize for Differential Geometry, Lie Groups, and Symmetric Spaces and Groups and Geometric Analysis.

Differential geometry is a major field of mathematics that uses tools from calculus, in particular integrals and derivatives, to study problems in... geometry. Differential geometry has applications in several fields, including physics, economics, engineering, and computer vision. This book focuses on the geometric properties of curves and surfaces, one- and two-dimensional objects in Euclidean space. The problems generally relate to questions of local properties (the properties observed at a point on the curve or surface) or global properties (the properties of the object as a whole). Some of the more interesting theorems look at how local properties relate to global ones. A special feature is the availability of accompanying online interactive java applets coordinated with each section. The applets allow students to investigate and manipulate curves and surfaces to develop intuition and to help analyze geometric phenomena. Each section includes numerous interesting exercises that range from straightforward to challenging.

"How useful it is," noted the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, "to have a single, short, well-written book on differential topology." This... accessible volume introduces advanced undergraduates and graduate students the systematic study of the topological structure of smooth manifolds, from elements of theory to method of surgery. 1993 edition.

Differential Topology provides an elementary and intuitive introduction to the study of smooth manifolds. In the years since its first publication,... Guillemin and Pollack's book has become a standard text on the subject. It is a jewel of mathematical exposition, judiciously picking exactly the right mixture of detail and generality to display the richness within. The text is mostly self-contained, requiring only undergraduate analysis and linear algebra. By relying on a unifying idea--transversality--the authors are able to avoid the use of big machinery or ad hoc techniques to establish the main results. In this way, they present intelligent treatments of important theorems, such as the Lefschetz fixed-point theorem, the Poincaré-Hopf index theorem, and Stokes theorem. The book has a wealth of exercises of various types. Some are routine explorations of the main material. In others, the students are guided step-by-step through proofs of fundamental results, such as the Jordan-Brouwer separation theorem. An exercise section in Chapter 4 leads the student through a construction of de Rham cohomology and a proof of its homotopy invariance. The book is suitable for either an introductory graduate course or an advanced undergraduate course.

This brief and highly practical text offers pre-service and in-service teachers strategies and activities for differentiating early literacy... instruction for English language learners. The author draws on a wealth of classroom experience working with teachers and students to create a book that gives readers the critical information they need to teach English language learners in an accessible format. This book is packed with strategies and activities that are directly applicable to the classroom and that focus on meeting the early literacy demands of No Child Left Behind. Early literacy strategies for English language learners are differentiated according five levels of language proficiency. The book includes a wealth of tips for parent involvement, offering ways parents, who may not be literate in English, can help their child develop literacy skills. Assessment tools for differentiating levels of English proficiency are included throughout to help pre-service and in-service teachers assess levels of English proficiency in order to differentiate instruction.

This book demonstrates how to make your classroom more responsive to the needs of individual students with a wide variety of learning styles, interests,... goals, cultural backgrounds, and prior knowledge. Focusing on grades 6 through 12, this book showcases classroom-tested activities and strategies. Differentiated Instruction: A Guide for Middle and High School Teachers shows you how to vary your instruction so you can respond to the needs of individual learners. The concrete examples in this book demonstrate how you can use differentiated instruction to clarify: • the content (what you want students to know and be able to do) • the process (how students are going to go about learning the content) • and the product (how they will show you what they know.) This book is uniquely interactive. It features "Reflections" to help you understand your teaching style and guide you towards developing habits of mind which result in effective differentiated instruction. Also included is a chapter on teaching students whose native language is not English.
