Change: Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? That depends, says Lyle E. Schaller, on your viewpoint and values. Any given change can be threatening if... all your values are wedded to the way things are now, if you can only view the future through the lens of the past. Or it can be exciting, if your viewpoint is geared toward the new possibilities that will arise from this change. By looking at several examples of large-scale, discontinuous change that have occurred over the last ten to thirty years, Schaller prepares church leaders to orient themselves to the new challenges and opportunities for ministry that will result from the accelerated transition going on around us.

Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for solving partial differential equations, developed in the late 1990s, have become popular among computational... scientists. This book covers both theory and computation as it focuses on three primal DG methods--the symmetric interior penalty Galerkin, incomplete interior penalty Galerkin, and nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin which are variations of interior penalty methods. The author provides the basic tools for analysis and discusses coding issues, including data structure, construction of local matrices, and assembling of the global matrix. Computational examples and applications to important engineering problems are also included. Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Solving Elliptic and Parabolic Equations: Theory and Implementation is divided into three parts: Part I focuses on the application of DG methods to second order elliptic problems in one dimension and in higher dimensions. Part II presents the time-dependent parabolic problems without and with convection. Part III contains applications of DG methods to solid mechanics (linear elasticity), fluid dynamics (Stokes and Navier Stokes), and porous media flow (two-phase and miscible displacement). Appendices contain proofs and MATLAB® code for one-dimensional problems for elliptic equations and routines written in C that correspond to algorithms for the implementation of DG methods in two or three dimensions. Audience: This book is intended for numerical analysts, computational and applied mathematicians interested in numerical methods for partial differential equations or who study the applications discussed in the book, and engineers who work in fluid dynamics and solid mechanics and want to use DG methods for their numerical results. The book is appropriate for graduate courses in finite element methods, numerical methods for partial differential equations, numerical analysis, and scientific computing. Chapter 1 is suitable for a senior undergraduate class in scientific computing. Contents: List of Figures; List of Tables; List of Algorithms; Preface; Part I: Elliptic Problems; Chapter 1: One-dimensional problem; Chapter 2: Higher dimensional problem; Part II: Parabolic Problems; Chaper 3: Purely parabolic problems; Chapter 4: Parabolic problems with convection; Part III: Applications; Chapter 5: Linear elasticity; Chapter 6: Stokes flow; Chapter 7: Navier-Stokes flow; Chapter 8: Flow in porous media; Appendix A: Quadrature rules; Appendix B: DG codes; Appendix C: An approximation result; Bibliography; Index.

Are democracies less likely to go to war than other kinds of states? This question is of tremendous importance in both academic and policy-making... circles and one that has been debated by political scientists for years. The Clinton administration, in particular, has argued that the United States should endeavor to promote democracy around the world. This timely reader includes some of the most influential articles in the debate that have appeared in the journal International Security during the past two years, adding two seminal pieces published elsewhere to make a more balanced and complete collection, suitable for classroom use.

Global warming, acid rain, the depletion of forests, the polluting of our atmosphere and oceans--the threats to our environment are numerous, raising... justifiable concern among most of us and genuine alarm in some. But as scientist Daniel Botkin argues in this provocative book, our ability to solve these problems is limited--not by our scientific knowledge--but by the age-old myths and metaphors that shape our perception of the natural world. Indeed, our beliefs about nature have fallen well behind our knowledge. Daniel Botkin is a seasoned scientist. He has spent three decades in the field studying the changes and interactions of forests and animal species. In the 1970s he pioneered the use of computers to predict ecological trends. Now, in Discordant Harmonies, he combines his considerable expertise with the well-honed eye of the nature writer and a philosopher's sense of how ideas shape our perceptions of reality to take us on a marvelous guided tour of the natural world. His method is to introduce a problem in our beliefs about nature by giving us a fascinating case study: of predator-prey relationships, of forests evolving over centuries, of species nearing extinction, of the ways our "protection" of nature has had surprising--and often disappointing--results. Botkin's revealing case studies also highlight controversial present-day issues--like controlled burning in national forests, fishing and hunting quotas, and policy-making for management of natural resources. He looks at each of these cases in the light of past thinking and current research, revealing how old myths often blind us to the new technology and to the ways of thinking we need to solve our environmental problems. Above all, Botkin is concerned with redefining the relationship between human beings and nature, so that our needs can be met and the intricate systems of nature can persist. Whether discussing moose herds on Isle Royale or Yosemite's famous Mariposa Grove of Sequoias, Botkin writes vividly and insightfully about nature, challenging us to rethink some of our most cherished notions. Anyone who is concerned about the environment will find much here to ponder as well as the pleasure of meeting a stimulating and thoughtful mind at work.

Organized thematically, this introduction outlines the basic principles and moves on to examine the methods and theory of CDA (critical discourse... analysis). Topics covered include text and context, language and inequality, choice and determination, history and process, ideology and identity. Jan Blommaert focuses on how language can offer a crucial understanding of wider aspects of power relations, arguing that CDA should specifically analyze the effects of power.

Current methodological research has found that in order for learners to acquire language that is both linguistically accurate and socially appropriate,... their awareness of patterns and of what is systematic about language must be developed. In Discourse Analysis in the Language Classroom, Heidi Riggenbach has compiled activities that will foster this awareness by putting students in the role of discourse analysts and language researchers so that they may learn the patterns and systems for themselves. This book is intended for ESL/EFL teachers who wish to have a better understanding of discourse analysis as it applies to the language classroom and who need to design courses and materials with the goal of developing students' skills as researchers in acquiring their new language. The book includes: an overview of discourse analysis and its relevance to language teachers and learners; background material on the interesting features pertaining to oral language skills; presentation of techniques for preparing students to be researchers and for implementing discourse analysis tools in the classroom and the activities that employ these techniques; and a discussion of options for incorporating discourse analysis into different course situations.

Discourse and Context in Language Teaching: A Guide for Language Teachers is part of the Cambridge Handbooks for Language for Language Teachers series. ... This book recommends that language teachers incorporate an awareness of discourse and pragmatics in their teaching if they wish to implement a communicative approach in their classrooms. After two introductory chapters on discourse and pragmatics, the authors show how a discourse perspective can enhance the teaching of traditional areas of linguistic knowledge and the teaching of language processing skills. This awareness of discourse is then carried over to curriculum development, assessment, and classroom research. With discussion questions and activities at the end of each chapter, this book can be used in methods courses or in-service training programs.

Across the social sciences and humanities, "identity" is increasingly treated as something actively and publicly created through discourse. This book... examines everyday conversation, institutional settings, narrative, spatial locations, and other situations where people do "identity work." The authors demonstrate a range of analytical methods to study this discursive identity and link them to larger critical debates. Featuring several original case studies, practical instruction for analysis, and additional suggested readings, this book offers invaluable insight into the discursive components of identity.

Now available in paperback, this book is a critical introduction to discourse analysis as it is practised in a variety of different disciplines today,... from linguistics and sociolinguistics to sociology and cultural studies. The author shows how concern with the analysis of discourse can be combined, in a systematic and fruitful way, with an interest in broader problems of social analysis and social change. Fairclough provides a concise and critical review of the methods and results of discourse analysis, discussing the descriptive work of linguists and conversation analysts as well as the more historically and theoretically oriented work of Michel Foucault. He develops an original framework for discourse analysis which firmly situates discourse in a broader context of social relations bringing together text analysis, the analysis of processes of text production and interpretation, and the social analysis of discourse events.
