(Schott). This book is intended for those who want detailed, practical assistance in how and why to use Orff techniques and materials in the classroom.... Goals are outlined and the best ways to achieve them are explored, but the principal focus is on the arrangement of the curriculum in a logical sequence. Such a structure provides a reasonable progression from simple to more complex objectives not only from day to day but from year to year. Structured learning need not be the enemy of improvisation but rather the best way to provide students with the tools they need to improvise. The book contains an introduction to the development of Orff-Schulwerk and a discussion of the distinguishing features of this approach. Chapter Two introduces the activities children use in their music-making. The teaching procedure that structures those activities is taken up in Chapter Three while Chapter Four explains the vocabulary and accompaniment theory essential to the Orff teacher. Part Two applies these elements in a sequential curriculum designed for Grades One through Five. Especially important in each chapter is the inclusion of supporting activities designed to aid in teaching the various skills and concepts.

Theology is the knowledge of God; but unlike other types of information, which simply provide a broader understanding of a topic, theology is intimately... connected to how we exist and conduct ourselves in the world. With this in mind, it’s important that we, as Christians, understand our beliefs in order to value their impact and practice them effectively.Discovering Our Christian Faith is an introduction to Christian theology. It explores the Bible’s amazing story, beginning with creation and ending with the return of Christ. Dr. Samuel Powell presents the leading doctrines of Christianity and explores how they have been shaped throughout the centuries. With thorough examination and academic scholarship, he outlines the creedal statements of Wesleyan-holiness churches and explores the importance of eschatology in every doctrine, seeking to maintain the coherence and systematic character of Christian belief. In addition to a section on ethical dimensions of the doctrines discussed, each chapter includes a hymn by John and/or Charles Wesley that expresses the theme of the chapter.Discovering Our Christian Faith offers students, scholars, pastors, and teachers the opportunity to engage and unite their faith and intellect in an act of worship. With challenging insight and enriching evidence, it brings readers face to face with the beginning and end of our being by seeking to understand and encounter the knowledge of God.Check out this review of Discovering Our Christian Faith by The Arminian Magazine

This brief, inexpensive introduction to the techniques, methods, and theoretical frameworks of contemporary archaeology follows the same organizing... principle as the text Archaeology: Discovering Our Past but features less detail. Archaeological methods and theory are covered comprehensively--at a reasonable level of detail--in under 300 pages. Illustrative examples and case studies present a temporal and geographic balance of both Old and New World sites. Abundant student aids include maps of archaeological areas, extensive illustrations, chapter introductions and summaries, a guide to further reading at the end of each chapter, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index.

Discovering Philosophy is a comprehensive introduction to philosophy that is specially designed for readers who are more comfortable with secondary,... rather than primary sources. Using more accessible content that is unintimidating yet intellectually engaging, it relates the philosophical issues to readers' own experiences and challenges them to do philosophy on their own. Presents excerpts from primary sources when appropriate, but relies primarily on summaries, explanations, and discussions of the major arguments on the issues involved; teaches readers not so much about what philosophers think, but how to think philosophically themselves; demonstrates that after understanding a philosopher's position we are supposed to react to it, not memorize it; explores the major, traditional areas and topics of philosophy – logic, free will/determinism, ethics, political obligation, the nature of reality, knowledge, the existence of God, the meaning of life.
