With the integration of people with disabilities into society, there has been increasing interest in modifying homes to enable them to live... independently in the community. The aging population has also raised concerns about how well homes can support older peoples’ health and safety as they age. Occupational therapists require skills and knowledge to assess the modification needs of these clients including consideration of their current and future requirements and the nature and use of the home environment. An Occupational Therapist’s Guide to Home Modification Practice by Elizabeth Ainsworth and Desleigh De Jonge, uses a transactional approach to examine the person in their home environment. The text assists occupational therapists in addressing the needs of consumers, including consideration of their current and future requirements, the nature and use of the home environment, understanding the technical aspects of the built environment, design approaches, and the application of a range of products and finishes to determine appropriate modification solutions. An Occupational Therapist’s Guide to Home Modification Practice provides occupational therapists with valuable information and expertise for identifying home modification requirements. The text discusses how to consider the personal, cultural, social, temporal, and physical aspects of the home in decision making and provides occupational therapists with a systematic process for identifying and evaluating home-based interventions.Inside you’ll find: • A detailed understanding of aspects of the home environment that impact home modification decisions • A review of legislative environment and funding systems that facilitate service delivery • An overview of home modification services, as well as future trends • An in-depth examination of the home modification process, including discussion about approaches to evaluation, measuring and drawing the environment, identifying and evaluating interventions, the relevance and application of design standards, and reporting and legal issues • Comprehensive case studies – illustrated by photographs – will assist occupational therapists in understanding the range of issues and conceptualizing solutionsWith content that is essential to occupational therapy practice that is not currently addressed in any other text, plus a systematic approach to identifying and evaluating home-based interventions, An Occupational Therapist’s Guide to Home Modification Practice is a vital text for occupational therapy educators and students, as well as both novice and experienced clinicians. From the Foreword: “This is a book that should be on the bookshelf in every clinic… and should be a core text for students.” -Carolyn M. Accidents, as in "chance happenings" (according to Webster), are hardly chance at all. Accidents don't just happen. They are caused; caused by... indifference and by incompetence. A meteor hitting your car is an accident, everything else is driver error. If you don't believe that, this book will convince you. Racing drivers use their eyes, hands and feet in ways which can benefit us on the highway. This book shows how these skills can be used to improve everyday driving. It addresses the thought processes involved and suggests ways to improve quick thinking, rapid decision making and anticipation to help avoid accidents. State driver licensing tests do nothing to show the applicant's ability to minimize judgement errors. This book shows exactly what they are and how to correct them. Whether you are expert or novice at driving, you will learn equally from this book. It will make you a better driver.

Forget everything you thought you knew about how to motivate people--at work, at school, at home. It's wrong. As Daniel H. Pink explains in his new and... paradigm-shattering book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, the secret to high performance and satisfaction in today's world is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does--and how that affects every aspect of our lives. He demonstrates that while the old-fashioned carrot-and-stick approach worked successfully in the 20th century, it's precisely the wrong way to motivate people for today's challenges. In Drive, he reveals the three elements of true motivation: * Autonomy- the desire to direct our own lives * Mastery- the urge to get better and better at something that matters * Purpose- the yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves Along the way, he takes us to companies that are enlisting new approaches to motivation and introduces us to the scientists and entrepreneurs who are pointing a bold way forward. Drive is bursting with big ideas--the rare book that will change how you think and transform how you live.

This thoroughly revised Third Edition of Drive Yourself Sane, first published in 1993, remains the most reliable short introduction to 'general... semantics' (GS) now available. A remarkable system of thought founded by Alfred Korzybski (1879-1950), GS is based on a careful study of human behavior and scientific problem-solving, bridging applied psychology and practical philosophy. Drive Yourself Sane provides time-tested methods for critical and creative thinking and constructive communicating with a variety of problem-solving applications for mental hygiene, personal development, education, business, etc. The text and accompanying exercises help readers sharpen the primary tools they were born with: their individual brain-nervous systems with their marvelous capacities to adapt to change and to learn from and build upon their own and other people's experiences. This Third Edition contains fascinating additional biographical material about Alfred Korzybski, based on research for Bruce Kodish's book, Korzybski: A Biography. Includes Notes, Bibliography and Index.

In their efforts to become more customer-focused, companies everywhere find themselves entangled in outmoded systems, metrics, and strategies rooted in... their product-centered view of the world. Now, to ease this shift to a customer focus, marketing strategy experts Roland T. Rust, Valarie A. Zeithaml, and Katherine N. Lemon have created a dynamic new model they call "Customer Equity," a strategic framework designed to maximize every firm's most important asset, the total lifetime value of its customer base. The authors' Customer Equity Framework yields powerful insights that will help any business increase the value of its customer base. Rust, Zeithaml, and Lemon introduce the three drivers of customer equity -- Value Equity, Brand Equity, and Retention Equity -- and explain in clear, nontechnical language how managers can base their strategies on one or a combination of these drivers. The authors demonstrate in this breakthrough book how managers can build and employ competitive metrics that reveal their company's Customer Equity relative to their competitors. Based on these metrics, they show how managers can determine which drivers are most important in their industry, how they can make efficient strategic trade-offs between expenditures on these drivers, and how to project a financial return from these expenditures. The final section devotes two chapters to the Customer Pyramid, an approach that segments customers based on their long-term profitability, and an especially important chapter examines the Internet as the ultimate Customer Equity tool. Here the authors show how companies such as Intuit.com, Schwab.com, and Priceline.com have used more than one or all three drivers to increase Customer Equity. In this age of one-to-one marketing, understanding how to drive Customer Equity is central to the success of any firm. In particular, Driving Customer Equity will be essential reading for any marketing manager and, for that matter, any manager concerned with growing the value of the firm's customer base.

Proposals for power-sharing constitutions remain controversial, as highlighted by current debates in Iraq, Afghanistan, Nepal, and Sudan. This book... updates and refines the theory of consociationalism, taking account of the flood of contemporary innovations in power-sharing institutions that have occurred worldwide. The book classifies and compares four types of political institutions: the electoral system, parliamentary or presidential executives, unitary or federal states, and the structure and independence of the mass media. The study tests the potential advantages and disadvantages of each of these institutions for democratic governance. Cross-national time-series data concerning trends in democracy are analyzed for all countries worldwide since the early 1970s. Chapters are enriched by comparing detailed case studies. The mixed-method research design illuminates the underlying causal mechanisms by examining historical developments and processes of institutional change within particular nations and regions. The conclusion draws together the results and the practical lessons for policymakers.

Strategies for long-term social impactThis important new book illustrates how to create the social breakthroughs needed to solve urgent global threats... such as poverty, disease, and hunger. It then turns to three alternative, but complementary, paths to social breakthrough: social protecting, social exploring, and social advocacy, providing a detailed map of the journey from initial commitment to a world of justice and opportunityExamines the current condition of the social impact infrastructureOffers strategies for how to remedy the steady weakening of our social-impact infrastructureProvides tactics to build strong social organizations and networksIllustrates dynamic methods to respond to constant economic and social changeAuthor Paul Light believes we should be less concerned about the tools of agitation (social entrepreneurship, social protecting, social exploring, and social advocacy) and more concerned about the disruption and replacement of the status quo. Timely in its urgency, this book describes the revolutionary social impact cycle, which provides a new approach for framing the debate about urgent threats.
