Duke Wolff was a flawless specimen of the American clubman -- a product of Yale and the OSS, a one-time fighter pilot turned aviation engineer. Duke... Wolff was a failure who flunked out of a series of undistinguished schools, was passed up for military service, and supported himself with desperately improvised scams, exploiting employers, wives, and, finally, his own son.In The Duke of Deception, Geoffrey Wolff unravels the enigma of this Gatsbyesque figure, a bad man who somehow was also a very good father, an inveterate liar who falsified everything but love.

This is a major revision and redesign of a classic work in the field of veterinary medicine first published by Cornell University Press in 1933. For the... Twelfth Edition of Dukes' Physiology of Domestic Animals, William O. Reece has overseen the writing of an essentially new book that retains what was best about its predecessors. Long a standard text for veterinary practitioners and other professionals who seek to refresh their knowledge of particular subjects, Dukes' Physiology of Domestic Animals will now appeal to a new generation of students of veterinary medicine and animal science and to biomedical researchers. Section editors known for their scientific expertise and teaching skill oversaw the book's six main sections: The Body Fluids and Blood; Renal and Respiratory Function and Acid-Base Balance; The Cardiovascular System; Digestion, Absorption, and Metabolism; Endocrinology, Reproduction, and Lactation; and Nervous System, Special Senses, Muscle, and Temperature Regulation. This edition includes a complete listing of each chapter's contents immediately after the chapter head, study questions that highlight the major concepts of each major subsection, self-evaluation exercises at the end of the chapters, suggestions for further reading, and a comprehensive index.

Stasiuk’s masterpiece—in line with the work of Danilo Kis and countryman Bruno Schulz—is finally made available in English in a stunning... translation by Bill Johnston. At several points in the haunting Dukla, Andrzej Stasiuk claims that what he is trying to do is “write a book about light.” The result is a beautiful, lyrical series of evocations of a very specific locale at different times of the year, in different kinds of weather, and with different human landscapes. Dukla, in fact, is a real place: a small resort town not far from where Stasiuk now lives. Taking an usual form—a short essay, a novella, and then a series of brief portraits of local people or events—this book, though bordering on the metaphysical, the mystical, even the supernatural, never loses sight of the particular time, and above all place, in which it is rooted. Andrzej Stasiuk is one of the leading writers of Poland’s younger generation, and is currently one of the most popular Polish novelists in English translation.

Dulcan s Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry supplants the previous textbook edited by Jerry Wiener and Mina Dulcan not with a new edition, but... rather a new book. It offers the most up-to-date and comprehensive text in child and adolescent psychiatry as presented by more than 110 contributors, with 56 of the 65 chapters featuring new lead authors. Both the organization of the original text and the structure of the chapters have been overhauled to highlight what we now know about evidence-based practices in assessment and treatment, while preserving clinical wisdom. Chapters on evaluation are developmentally focused, with a separate chapter for each age range. Eighteen chapters focus on specific disorders, while special topics include new chapters on bereavement and traumatic grief; ethnic, cultural, and religious issues; aggression and violence; children of ill parents; legal/ethical issues; and telepsychiatry. The text s wide-ranging emphasis on treatment expanded from seven to eighteen chapters includes psychopharmacology, brain-based innovative treatments, and a range of psychosocial approaches that focus on individual, family, therapeutic milieu, and systemic models of care. A new section on consultation provides guidance on interactions with schools, primary care practitioners, and the juvenile justice system. Both scholarly and practical, Dulcan s Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is a core resource for child and adolescent psychiatry training and will also serve as a reference for practitioners in psychiatry, pediatrics, neurology, psychology, nursing, and social work.

In this forcefully argued book, the leading evolutionary theorist of language draws on evidence from evolutionary biology, genetics, physical... anthropology, anatomy, and neuroscience, to provide a framework for studying the evolution of human language and cognition. Philip Lieberman argues forcibly that the widely influential theories of language's development, advanced by Chomskian linguists and cognitive scientists, especially those that postulate a single dedicated language "module," "organ," or "instinct," are inconsistent with principles and findings of evolutionary biology and neuroscience. He argues that the human neural system in its totality is the basis for the human language ability, for it requires the coordination of neural circuits that regulate motor control with memory and higher cognitive functions. Pointing out that articulate speech is a remarkably efficient means of conveying information, Lieberman also highlights the adaptive significance of the human tongue. Fully human language involves the species-specific anatomy of speech, together with the neural capacity for thought and movement. In Lieberman's iconoclastic Darwinian view, the human language ability is the confluence of a succession of separate evolutionary developments, jury-rigged by natural selection to work together for an evolutionarily unique ability. With over 70,000 copies of the first edition in print, this radical treatise on public education has been a New Society Publishers’ bestseller for 10... years! Thirty years in New York City’s public schools led John Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory schooling does little but teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. This second edition describes the wide-spread impact of the book and Gatto’s "guerrilla teaching."John Gatto has been a teacher for 30 years and is a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. His other titles include A Different Kind of Teacher (Berkeley Hills Books, 2001) and The Underground History of American Education (Oxford Village Press, 2000).

Banned in Vietnam until 1986, Dumb Luck--by the controversial and influential Vietnamese writer Vu Trong Phung--is a bitter satire of the rage for... modernization in Vietnam during the late colonial era. First published in Hanoi during 1936, it follows the absurd and unexpected rise within colonial society of a street-smart vagabond named Red-haired Xuan. As it charts Xuan's fantastic social ascent, the novel provides a panoramic view of late colonial urban social order, from the filthy sidewalks of Hanoi's old commercial quarter to the gaudy mansions of the emergent Francophile northern upper classes. The transformation of traditional Vietnamese class and gender relations triggered by the growth of colonial capitalism represents a major theme of the novel.Dumb Luck is the first translation of a major work by Vu Trong Phung, arguably the greatest Vietnamese writer of the twentieth century. The novel's clever plot, richly drawn characters and humorous tone and its preoccupation with sex, fashion and capitalism will appeal to a wide audience. It will appeal to students and scholars of Vietnam, comparative literature, colonial and postcolonial studies, and Southeast Asian civilization.Vu Trong Phung died in Hanoi, in 1939 at the age of twenty-seven. He is the author of at least eight novels, seven plays, and several other works of fiction in addition to Dumb Luck.Peter Zinoman is Associate Professor of Southeast Asian History, University of California, Berkeley. Nguyen Nguyet Cam is Vietnamese Language Instructor, University of California, Berkeley.

Africans brought as slaves to North America arrived without possessions, but not without culture. The fascinating elements of African life manifested... themselves richly in the New World, and among the most lasting and influential of these was the art of African dance. This generously illustrated history follows the dynamics of African dance forms throughout each generation. Early chapters discuss the African continent and the heritage of African American dance; the discrimination and marginalization of African Americans and the fortitude with which their dance forms survived; and black dance in the slavery era and later in the nineteenth century. Remaining chapters outline ten major characteristics that have consistently marked African American dance, and describe the various styles of black vernacular dance that became popular in America. The book concludes with a discussion of African dance at the end of the twentieth century and its important role in the flowering of African American arts.

To be poor, working-class, or a person of color in the United States often means bearing a disproportionate share of the country’s environmental... problems. Starting with the premise that all Americans have a basic right to live in a healthy environment, Dumping in Dixie chronicles the efforts of five African American communities, empowered by the civil rights movement, to link environmentalism with issues of social justice. In the third edition, Bullard speaks to us from the front lines of the environmental justice movement about new developments in environmental racism, different organizing strategies, and success stories in the struggle for environmental equity.
