A two-volume set, consisting of the latest editions of the two volumes (3rd edition (2005) for Vol. I, and 4th edition (2012) for Vol. II). Much... supplementary material can be found at the book's web page. The first volume is oriented towards modeling, conceptualization, and finite-horizon problems, but also includes a substantive introduction to infinite horizon problems that is suitable for classroom use. The second volume is oriented towards mathematical analysis and computation, treats infinite horizon problems extensively, and provides an up-to-date account of approximate large-scale dynamic programming and reinforcement learning. This is a textbook on the far-ranging algorithmic methododogy of Dynamic Programming, which can be used for optimal control, Markovian decision problems, planning and sequential decision making under uncertainty, and discrete/combinatorial optimization. The treatment focuses on basic unifying themes, and conceptual foundations. It illustrates the versatility, power, and generality of the method with many examples and applications from engineering, operations research, and other fields. It also addresses extensively the practical application of the methodology, possibly through the use of approximations, and provides an introduction to the methodology of Neuro-Dynamic Programming, which is the focus of much recent research.

A major revision of the second volume of a textbook on the far-ranging algorithmic methododogy of Dynamic Programming, which can be used for optimal... control, Markovian decision problems, planning and sequential decision making under uncertainty, and discrete/combinatorial optimization. The second volume is oriented towards mathematical analysis and computation, and treats infinite horizon problems extensively. New features of the 3rd edition are: 1) A major enlargement in size and scope: the length has increased by more than 50%, and most of the old material has been restructured and/or revised. 2) Extensive coverage (more than 100 pages) of recent research on simulation-based approximate dynamic programming (neuro-dynamic programming), which allow the practical application of dynamic programming to large and complex problems. 3) An in-depth development of the average cost problem (more than 100 pages), including a full analysis of multichain problems, and an extensive analysis of infinite-spaces problems. 4) An introduction to infinite state space stochastic shortest path problems. 5) Expansion of the theory and use of contraction mappings in infinite state space problems and in neuro-dynamic programming. 6) A substantive appendix on the mathematical measure-theoretic issues that must be addressed for a rigorous theory of stochastic dynamic programming. Much supplementary material can be found in the book's web page

The second edition provides engineers with a conceptual understanding of how dynamics is applied in the field. It builds their problem-solving skills.... New problems with a wider variety of difficulty levels and applications have been added. An online problem-solving tool is available to reinforce how to find solutions. New images are included to add a visual element to the material. These show the link between an actual system and a modeled/analyzed system. Engineers will also benefit from the numerous new worked problems, algorithmic problems, and multi-part GO problems.

Reflecting the author's vast experience as teacher, researcher, and practitioner, Shulman's DYNAMICS AND SKILLS OF GROUP COUNSELING delivers a current,... comprehensive, and practical introduction to methods for effective group counseling. Concepts come to life with vivid cases that include "Record of Service" reports and dialogue from actual groups. These illustrative examples connect solid theory to the latest practices as they address the day-to-day realities of leading counseling groups. In addition, the book offers a clear format on how to run a group built around four phases of work: the preliminary (preparatory) phase; the beginning (contracting) phase; the middle (work) phase; and the ending and transition phase. It also demonstrates how these lessons can be applied to a wide range of settings.

This book presents a new teaching methodology in Dynamics using E-learning, simulations and animation of mechanisms and mechanical vibrating systems. It... covers Dynamics and Vibration modules that are taught at different undergraduate levels to the engineering students at Universities in the UK and worldwide. The content of the book is suitable for Level 1 Dynamics modules for Engineering students (Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace & Medical), as well as Level 2/3 Dynamics and Vibration Modules being taught to Mechanical, Aerospace & Medical Engineering students. In addition to the theory sections and the tutorial sheets provided after each chapter, software called DAMA, ‘Dynamic Analysis for Mechanical Application’, in which simulations of mechanisms and vibrating systems are implemented, is provided via a website. The DAMA software is packaged with everything it needs to work immediately. The simulations it contains are used to enhance students understanding of the motion and vibration of mechanical systems. The simulations include motion of a single cylinder engine, four-bar linkage mechanisms, gears and sliding/rotating rigid bars along with many others. The simulations are fully interactive so that any change in the input parameters is immediately reflected in the animation, output plots and output parameters.

Electrical engineers can significantly improve the way they design power components and systems using the PC-based modeling and simulation tools... discussed in this book. This book covers the fundamentals of electrical system modeling and simulation, using two of the industry's most popular software packages, MATLAB and SIMULINK. It also shows how to interpret the results and use them in the design process. The book reviews the basics of magnetics and line modeling. It covers a wide range of electrical components and systems, including: transformers, electric machines, three-phase induction machines, synchronous machines, and DC machines. This standalone book with accompanying website (at www.informit.com/title/0137237855) offer a complete treatment from background theory and models to implementation and verification techniques for simulations and linear analysis of frequently studies machine systems. The project files were originally included in a CD that went with the book. With the changeover to "print on demand", the files can be found here: https://engineering.purdue.edu/~ong/index_right.htm#book

Most undergraduate books for engineering dynamics exhibit a continuing disconnect from either the requirements of subsequent coursework or the practice... of dynamics in an engineering career. Dynamics in Engineering Practice, Tenth Edition counters this dated viewpoint with a modern approach that is better suited to today’s engineering study and practice. Written by a renowned teacher, researcher, and professional consultant in applied dynamics, this book represents a revolutionary approach to modern engineering dynamics analysis—one you can assimilate quickly and easily to get immediate results. Real-World Guidance to Reconnect Principles and Practice The book begins by establishing the premise that most "dynamics engineers" are developing and analyzing models to predict motion, and that the subject of differential equations is the natural language for dynamics. From this starting point, the author immediately presents mechanical vibration examples to demonstrate applications of f=ma and work-energy principles, and he includes multiple "real-world" 1DOF and MDOF planar dynamics examples, which are completely worked out. Learn Exactly How an Engineer REALLY Solves Engineering Modeling and Analysis Problems Dynamics describes the continuous evolution of motion, yet most textbooks approach the field as a series of ‘‘snapshots,’’ posing questions about variables at specific idealized positions or orientations. Advancing the idea that a practicing dynamics engineer’s central role is to develop and analyze models, this book: Presents an ordered and logical set of procedures and alternatives for developing models and solutions for any planar dynamic or vibration example Uses repeated examples to demonstrate how models are analyzed via current computer approaches Includes the latest MATLAB® updates and other proven methods for modeling and analysis Helps readers ask the right questions to get the most out of problems and optimize modeling of general dynamic systems. Based on the author’s more than 40 years of experience teaching and developing courses in dynamics, this book teaches general skills—where effectiveness can be demonstrated for a wide range of problems, rather than a collection of problem-specific "tricks." An essential resource at both the academic and professional levels, this text will be indispensable to both students and working engineers analyzing real dynamic systems.
