KEY BENEFIT: This book introduces the philosophy of economic justice while presenting a non-dogmatic defense of the welfare state. It presents... and describes libertarian capitalism, state socialism, and the welfare state with the purpose of determining which best satisfies the requirements of economic justice. Each system is then evaluated from the perspective of three widely recognized values: promoting human well-being, giving people what they deserve, and promoting human liberty. Though the book defends a particular position, it is also written to encourage readers to think about the issues intelligently and form their own educated views on the subject. Written in a clear and readable style, Economic Justice explains the central ideas on the nature of capitalism, socialism, and the welfare state while providing concise discussions of the major theorists: Marx, Nozick, and Rawls. An important and valuable book for any reader interested in understanding and evaluating the current debates and issues of economic justice as they relate to capitalism and the welfare state.

This casebook provides a means to further the conversation between critical legal scholarship and law and economics. It addresses such issues as what... economics can tell us about democracy and the law, what theories of justice can tell us about economic theory and the law, and why no legal language addressing class in the United States exists, and what such a language might look like. It uses the problem of racial and gender injustice as a basis to interrogate both critical theory and economic theory. The Second Edition provides a timely new chapter on the financial collapse, the turmoil in modern macroeconomic theory, and the economic justice claims of borrowers who received predatory loans. The coverage expands to include the following: Origins of the Subprime Mortgage Crisis The Racial Wealth Gap and HomeownershipIdentity and WealthGlobal Interconnectedness of Financial Institutions and The Paradox of domestic discriminationWhat Happened to Economics? The Turmoil in the economics discipline and its failure to predict the housing bubble and collapseThe Inequality Machine: Cashflow Waterfalls and Predatory Loans: Greenwich Financial Services v Countrywide MortgageThe Contract Claims vs the Economic Justice Claims Bonuses: Democracy and Contracts: Listening to the Outrage. What is Fair? City of Baltimore v Wells Fargo California v Countrywide MortgageResistance and Self-Help Squatters Judicial nullification of foreclosure enforcement actions MERS Litigation- How Electronic Efficiencies in Property Recordation Failed the Requisites of Property Formality.

In its third edition, Economic Literacy: Basic Economics with An Attitude, explains the logic, language, and worldview of economic theory while... maintaining the engaging and accessible style that has made earlier editions so successful. While covering the fundamentals of the discipline, the author also includes a wide range of new material focusing on the structure, causes and results of the 'Great Recession'. From microeconomics and macroeconomics to the composition of international and domestic economies, Economic Literacy also makes the key distinction between economics as an academic discipline and the economy as a practical reality. By analyzing this crucial difference, the book encourages students to think critically about the distinctive viewpoint proposed by academic economics and its influence on politics and culture. Using this approach, readers will be enabled to understand both current affairs and professional economics literature, making this book uniquely beneficial for students both practically and theoretically. Never grim, often witty, and frequently insightful into our turbulent financial times, Economic Literacy's third edition is a must for students of economics everywhere.

Is economic nationalism an outdated phenomenon in light of globalization? Economic Nationalism in a Globalizing World demonstrates the enduring, and... even heightened, economic significance of national identities and nationalism in the current age. The volume's contributors, pioneers in the reinterpretation of economic nationalism, explore diverse ways in which national identities and nationalism continue to shape contemporary economic policies and processes. The authors examine the question in a range of geographical contexts and issues: European Union food politics, competitiveness strategies in New Zealand, East Asian development strategies, Japanese liberalization, monetary politics in Quebec and Germany, and post-Soviet economic reforms. Together, the cases explore the policy breadth of nationalism. It is not just a "protectionist" ideology but is in fact associated with a wide variety of economic policies, including support for economic liberalization and globalization.

What forces lead to democracy's creation? Why does it sometimes consolidate only to collapse at other times? Written by two of the foremost authorities... on this subject in the world, this volume develops a framework for analyzing the creation and consolidation of democracy. It revolutionizes scholarship on the factors underlying government and popular movements toward democracy or dictatorship. Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson argue that different social groups prefer different political institutions because of the way they allocate political power and resources. Their book, the subject of a four-day seminar at Harvard's Center for Basic Research in the Social Sciences, was also the basis for the Walras-Bowley lecture at the joint meetings of the European Economic Association and Econometric Society in 2003 and is the winner of the John Bates Clark Medal. Daron Acemoglu is Charles P. Kindleberger Professor of Applied Economics at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received the 2005 John Bates Clark Medal awarded by the American Economic Association as the best economist working in the United States under age 40. He is the author of the forthcoming text Introduction to Modern Economic Growth. James A. Robinson is Professor of Government at Harvard University. He is a Harvard Faculty Associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and a member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research's Program on Institutions, Organizations, and Growth. He is coeditor with Jared Diamond of the forthcoming book Natural Experiments in History.

In the global marketplace of ideas, few realms spark as much conflict as religion. For millions of people, it is an integral part of everyday life,... reflected by a widely divergent supply of practices and philosophical perspectives. Yet, historically, the marketplace has not always been competitive. While the early Common Era saw competition between Christianity, Judaism, and the many pagan cults, Roman Christianity came eventually to dominate Western Europe. Using basic concepts of economic theory, Robert B. Ekelund Jr. and Robert D. Tollison explain the origin and subsequent spread of Roman Christianity, showing first how the standard concepts of risk, cost, and benefit can account for the demand for religion. Then, drawing on the economics of networking, entrepreneurship, and industrial organization, the book explains Christianity's rapid ascent. Like a business, the church developed sound business strategies that increased its market share to a near monopoly in the medieval period. This book offers a fascinating look at the dynamics of Christianity’s rise, as well as how aspects the church’s structure—developed over the first millennium—illuminate a number of critical problems faced by the church today.

This might be Mises's best-selling book. This new release is certainly the most beautiful edition to appear yet. It is a very clear explanation of the... basics of economic policy: private property, free trade, exchange, prices, interest, money and inflation, socialism, fascism, investment, and much more. As Mises discusses each topic, he addresses the many merits of market institutions and the dangers of intervention. These chapters were originally delivered as lectures in Argentina in 1958, at the University of Buenos Aires, and later written up in prose. Mises had urged Argentina to turn from dictatorship and socialism toward full liberty, so there is a special urgency behind the cool logic employed here. The book's continued popularity is due to its clarity of exposition on the ways in which economic policy affects everyone. It is a very good text for undergraduates studying economic policy, and for anyone who wants to gain a fundamental understanding of the interaction between market forces and government intervention.
