Still Keeping it Real and More Accessible Than Ever! Hubbard & O'Brien keeps it real in the third edition with updated examples, data, and... end-of-chapter problems, providing the most up-to-date discussion on the recession/financial crisis and the monetary and fiscal policy response. Hubbard & O'Brien is the only book that motivates students to learn economics through real business examples. The #1 question students of economics ask themselves is: "Why am I here, and will I ever use this?" Hubbard/O'Brien answer this question by demonstrating that real businesses use economics to make real decisions daily. This is motivating to all students, whether they are business majors or not. All students can relate to businesses they encounter in their everyday lives. Whether they open an art studio, do social work, trade on Wall Street, work for the government, or bartend at the local pub, students will benefit from understanding the economic forces behind their work. The book motivates users by demonstrating how real businesses use economics to make real decisions on a daily basis. Covers the different Market Structures in an intuitive fashion so that readers of all backgrounds and fields can grasp the importance and flow of these concepts. Chapter opening cases, examples and figures motivate the economic principles covered, while Solved Problems provide models of how to solve an econommic problem - keeping readers focused on the main ideas of each chapter, and preventing them from getting bogged down due to a lack of basic math or "word problem" skills.

McEachern "teaches by example." It is the text that uses examples and illustrations that students will recognize when they show up for class the first... day because they already have at least 17 years of personal experience with economic choices, institutions, and events. Easy to understand and filled with lively real-world examples, ECONOMICS: A CONTEMPORARY INTRODUCTION, Ninth Edition, is your ideal introduction to the principles of economics. McEachern approaches the course by using many economic concepts that you've likely encountered in your own life experiences. These life experiences are then explained as economic concepts through interesting case studies and focused examples. The case studies are found throughout the text, giving you genuine insight into how economic principles work in the real world -- and the recent economic crisis is covered throughout. McEachern's approachable style is enhanced by the powerful learning tools you'll find on Aplia, a web-based educational program designed to improve your understanding and your grade.

The idea of duality has proved to be a powerful device in modern work on the economics of consumer behaviour. The authors have used duality to provide... an integrated and accessible treatment of this subject. The book focuses on applications of the theory to welfare economics and econometric analysis. The book begins with four chapters that provide a self-contained presentation of the basic theory and its use in applied econometrics. These chapters also include elementary extensions of the theory to labour supply, durable goods, the consumption function, and rationing. The rest of the book is divided into three parts. In the first of these the authors discuss restrictions on choice and aggregation problems. The next part consists of chapters on consumer index numbers; household characteristics, demand, and household welfare comparisons; and social welfare and inequality. The last part extends the coverage of consumer behaviour to include the quality of goods and household production theory, labour supply and human capital theory, the consumption function and intertemporal choice, the demand for durable goods, and choice under uncertainty.

As external forces increase the demand for land conversion, communities are increasingly open to policies that encourage conservation of farm and forest... lands. This interest in conservation notwithstanding, the consequences of land-use policy and the drivers of land conversions are often unclear. One of the first books to deal exclusively with the economics of rural-urban sprawl, Economics and Contemporary Land-Use Policy explores the causes and consequences of rapidly accelerating land conversions in urban-fringe areas, as well as implications for effective policy responses. This book emphasizes the critical role of both spatial and economic-ecological interactions in contemporary land use, and the importance of a practical, policy-oriented perspective. Chapters illustrate an interaction of conceptual, theoretical, and empirical approaches to land-use policy and highlight advances in policy-oriented economics associated with the conservation and development of urban-fringe land. Issues addressed include (1) the appropriate role of economics in land-use policy, (2) forecasting and management of land conversion, (3) interactions among land use, property values, and local taxes, and (4) relationships among rural amenities, rural character, and urban-fringe land-use policy. Economics and Contemporary Land-Use Policy is a timely and relevant contribution to the land-use policy debate and will prove an essential reference for policymakers at the local, state, and federal levels. It will also be of interest to students, academics, and anyone with an interest in the practical application of economics to land-use issues.
