Presents a truth tree system based on the work of Jeffrey, as well as a natural deduction system inspired by that of Kalish and Montague. Contains detailed, yet accessible chapters on extensions and revisions of classical logic: modal logic, many-valued logic, fuzzy logic, intuitionistic logic, counterfactuals, deontic logic, common sense reasoning, and quantified modal logic. Includes problem sets, designed to lead students gradually from easier to more difficult problems. Now much revised since its first appearance in 1941, this book, despite its brevity, is notable for its scope and rigor. It provides a single strand of... simple techniques for the central business of modern logic. Basic formal concepts are explained, the paraphrasing of words into symbols is treated at some length, and a testing procedure is given for truth-function logic along with a complete proof procedure for the logic of quantifiers. Fully one third of this revised edition is new, and presents a nearly complete turnover in crucial techniques of testing and proving, some change of notation, and some updating of terminology. The study is intended primarily as a convenient encapsulation of minimum essentials, but concludes by giving brief glimpses of further matters.

ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICAL MODELING uses mathematics to study problems arising in areas such as Genetics, Finance, Medicine, and Economics. Throughout the... course of the book, students learn how to model a real situation, such as testing levels of lead in children or environmental cleanup. They then learn how to analyze that model in relationship to the real world, such as making recommendations for minimum treatment time for children exposed to lead paint or determining the minimum time required to adequately clean up a polluted lake. Often the results will be counterintuitive, such as finding that an increase in the rate of wild-life harvesting may actually decrease the long-term harvest, or that a lottery prize that is paid out over a number of years is worth far less than its advertised value. This use of mathematics illustrates and models real-world issues and questions, bringing the value of mathematics to life for students, enabling them to see, perhaps for the first time, the utility of mathematics.

The language of mathematics has proven over centuries of application to be an indispensable tool for the expression and analysis of real problems. With... numerical, graphical, and theoretical methods, this book examines the relevance of mathematical models to phenomena ranging from population growth and economics to medicine and the physical sciences. In a book written for the intelligent and literate non-mathematician, Kalman aims at an understanding of the power and utility of quantitative methods rather than at technical mastery of mathematical operations. He shows first that mathematical models can serve a critical function in understanding the world, and he concludes with a discussion of the problems encountered by traditional algebraic assumptions in chaos theory. Though models can often approximate future events based on existing data and quantitative relationships, Kalman shows that the appearance of regularity and order can often be misleading. By beginning with quantitative models and ending with an introduction to chaos, Kalman offers a broad treatment of both the power and limitations of quantitatively-based predictions.

Inspiring, empowering, and preparing preservice teachers for today''s classroom, ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS IS ANYTHING BUT ELEMENTARY: CONTENT AND METHODS... FROM A DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVE is a comprehensive program that delivers both a content and a methods text. Serving as a professional development guide for both pre-service and in-service teachers, this text''s integrated coverage helps dissolve the line between content and methods--and consequently bolsters teachers'' confidence in their delivery of math instruction. A strong emphasis on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics five core standards provides key information common to most state curricula relative to NCTM standards for pre-K through sixth grade. In addition, text content is based on thorough elementary mathematical scope and sequences that have been shown to be an effective means for guiding the delivery of curriculum and instruction.

“This book would be a great tool for helping [today’s future elementary teachers] acquire a ‘gut level’ understanding of mathematics... concepts.” - Hester Lewellen, Baldwin-Wallace College, OH “The writing in this text is very clear and would easily be understood by the intended audience. The real-world examples put the various math concepts into a context that is easily understood. The vignettes at the beginning of each chapter are interesting and they get the reader to begin thinking about the math concepts that will follow. Each of the chapters seem to build on one another and the author often refers back to activities and concepts from previous chapters which is meaningful to the reader because it lets the reader know that the information they are learning builds their conceptual understanding of other mathematical concepts. “ - Melany L. Rish, University of South Carolina, Aiken Organized around five key concepts or “powerful ideas” in mathematics, this book presents elementary mathematics content in a concise and nonthreatening manner for teachers. Designed to sharpen teachers’ mathematics pedagogical content knowledge, the friendly writing style and vignettes relate math concepts to “real life” situations so that they may better present the content to their students. The five “powerful ideas” (composition, decomposition, relationships, representation, and context) provide an organizing framework and highlight the interconnections between mathematics topics. In addition, the book thoroughly integrates discussion of the five NCTM process strands. Features: Icons highlighting the NCTM process standards appear throughout the book to indicate where the text relates to each of these. Practice exercises and activities and their explanations reinforce math concepts presented in the book and provide an opportunity for reflection and practice. Concise, conversational chapters and opening vignettes present math contents simply enough for even the most math-anxious pre-service teachers.

This introduction to mathematical modeling uses elementary functions to describe and explore real-world data and phenomena. Helps readers connect... math with the world around them through real-world applications of elementary mathematics. Shows how to construct useful mathematical models, how to analyze them critically, and how to communicate quantitative concepts effectively. Uses concrete language and examples throughout to foster quantitative literacy. For anyone interested in gaining a solid foundation in mathematical concepts.

B> This book combines a firm theoretical/philosophical orientation to both normal and atypical development of infants and toddlers with practical ideas... for teaching and working with families. This book provides the link between research and practice to guide readers in understanding key principles of early development in infants and toddlers with disabilities. Early Intervention Services for Infants, Toddlers, and Their Families emphasizes that service providers need to have a firm foundation in typical child development before being able to fully understand and develop programs for children with unique needs. This book also promotes the acknowledgement of family members as partners in all aspects of service delivery and supports the role of service providers as advocates for both children and their families. Anyone with an interest in Early Intervention, special education or early childhood education.
