Winner of the Russian Booker Prize, a sensational novel of Russia set exactly 100 years after the revolution In the year 2017 in Russia-exactly 100... years after the revolution-poets and writers are obsolete, class distinctions are painfully sharp, and spirits intervene in the lives of humans from their home high in the mythical Riphean Mountains. Professor Anfilogov, a wealthy and emotionless man, sets out on an expedition to unearth priceless rubies that no one else has been able to locate. Young Krylov, a talented gem cutter who Anfilogov had taken under his wing, is seeing off his mentor at the train station when he is drawn to a mysterious stranger who calls herself Tanya. A scandalous affair ensues, but trouble arises in the shape of Krylov's ex-wife Tamara and a spy who appears at the lovers' every rendezvous. As events unfold, Krylov begins to learn more than he bargained for about the women in his life and realizes why he recognizes the spy from somewhere deep within his past. Meanwhile, Anfilogov's expedition reveals ugly truths about man's disregard for nature and the disasters stemming from insatiable greed. Olga Slavnikova stuns with this engaging and remarkable tale of love, obsession, murder, and the lengths people will go to get what they want.

This valuable language reference book presents 201 of the most often-used Mandarin Chinese monosyllabic verbs, with compounds and phrases for each... verb. This title departs from Barron's more typical 201/501 Verbs books in that it does not present conjugation tables. Chinese verbs cannot be conjugated because they do not change to indicate tense, person, or number. This book presents each verb, one verb per page, with both its Chinese character and its English infinitive form printed at the top of the page. Examples of common verb compounds are then presented in exemplary phrases with Chinese characters. Pronunciation for each phrase is given in the Roman alphabet (pinyin) and their meaning is given in English. The authors open this book with an enlightening introduction that explains Mandarin Chinese verb usage. They also provide extensive appendices at the end of the book, listing Chinese characters in both regular and simplified forms.

Is this what the future holds?June 12, 2030 started out like any other day in memory—and by then, memories were long.  Since cancer had been cured... fifteen years earlier, America’s population was aging rapidly.  That sounds like good news, but consider this: millions of baby boomers, with a big natural predator picked off, were sucking dry benefits and resources that were never meant to hold them into their eighties and beyond.  Young people around the country simmered with resentment toward “the olds” and anger at the treadmill they could never get off of just to maintain their parents’ entitlement programs. But on that June 12th, everything changed: a massive earthquake devastated Los Angeles, and the government, always teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, was unable to respond.  The fallout from the earthquake sets in motion a sweeping novel of ideas that pits national hope for the future against assurances from the past and is peopled by a memorable cast of refugees and billionaires, presidents and revolutionaries, all struggling to find their way.  In 2030, the author’s all-too-believable imagining of where today’s challenges could lead us tomorrow makes gripping and thought-provoking reading.
