This Second Edition of Elements of Petroleum Geology is completely updated and revised to reflect the vast changes in the field in the fifteen years... since publication of the First Edition. This book is a usefulprimer for geophysicists, geologists, and petroleum engineers in the oil industry who wish to expand their knowledge beyond their specialized area. It is also an excellent introductory text for a university course in petroleum geoscience.Elements of Petroleum Geology begins with an account of the physical and chemical properties of petroleum, reviewing methods of petroleum exploration and production. These methods include drilling, geophysical exploration techniques, wireline logging, and subsurface geological mapping. After describing the temperatures and pressures of the subsurface environment and the hydrodynamics of connate fluids, Selley examines the generation and migration of petroleum, reservoir rocks and trapping mechanisms, and the habit of petroleum in sedimentary basins. The book contains an account of the composition and formation of tar sands and oil shales, and concludes with a brief review of prospect risk analysis, reserve estimation, and other economic topics.* Updates the First Edition completely* Reviews the concepts and methodology of petroleum exploration and production* Written by a preeminent petroleum geologist and sedimentologist with 30 years of petroleum exploration in remote corners of the world* Contains information pertinent to geophysicists, geologists, and petroleum reservoir engineers

The first new edition in 13 years incorporates recent changes on the subject of streamlining from advances in computers. Their ever increasing speed and... storage capabilities have directly led to an entire new approach in photogrammetric mapping known as “Soft-Copy” photogrammetry. Digital Imaging systems, including those used in modern satellite programs, scanners for digitizing photographic images, and digital image processing techniques are new topics to be covered that are fundamental to soft copy photogrammetry.

This book is designed as a course in the phonetic transcription of normal and disordered speech. What differentiates this book from existing approaches... to phonetic transcription and conversational analysis is that it concentrates on linking together layers of detail to result in a complete record for the entire range of transcribable behaviors. Müller’s book represents the first attempt to amalgamate differing methods to give phoneticians and clinicians a transcriptional tool kit, thus allowing them to generate a rich description of their data. This approach results in a variety of layers of transcription, all or some of which are available to the clinician or researcher faced with the task of transcribing speech. The layers include a base, orthographic layer; segmental and suprasegmental phonetic layers; a gaze and gesture layer; a layer for marking aspects of discourse (e.g., overlap); and finally, a layer for highlighting behaviors of specific clinical interest (e.g., stuttering behavior). This book clearly lays out the various layers of transcription in this approach, illustrating them with normal and clinical data as well as exercises for the reader. Each chapter in the book addresses a different layer of transcription, with a final chapter illustrating how to bring the layers together. Worked examples accompany each chapter, and appendices provide a quick reference to symbols and transcription conventions. Clinicians who need to transcribe speech samples for diagnosing disorders, planning treatment, and measuring treatment efficacy milestones will value that added precision available from use of the upgraded transcription techniques elucidated in this book.

The science of physical hydrology centers on the physical principles involved in the study of the occurrence and movement of water on and beneath the... earth's surface. Because of its far-reaching implications for other disciplines, physical hydrology is of interest to students in fields ranging from the environmental sciences to engineering, policy studies, and even law.In this introductory-level text the authors begin from the premise that the complexities of modern hydrology can be mastered by understanding basic physical principles of fluid movement. Focusing first on analysis at the scale of a single watershed, they then introduce the mechanics of fluids in closed conduits and open channels. They reevaluate catchment processes in light of fluid mechanics, open channel hydraulics, and groundwater flow. In a concluding chapter, they stress the importance of understanding water movement in the environment by exploring the relationship of hydrology to such disciplines as atmospheric science, ecology, and geology. Accompanying the book is a CD-ROM, which provides a Web version of the text (Netscape Navigator 2.0 or later required). Included are video demonstrations, additional content and interactive review questions, and extensive links to facilitate study and review. Instructions for using the Web version are included. Also on the CD-ROM are simulation tools to study hydrological processes (MATLAB student version 5.0 required).

Power electronics is an enabling technology for almost all electrical applications. The field is growing rapidly because electrical devices need... electronic circuits to process their energy. Elements of Power Electronics, the first undergraduate book to discuss this subject in a conceptual framework, provides comprehensive coverage of power electronics at a level suitable for undergraduate student engineers, students in advanced degree programs, and novices in the field. It aims to establish a fundamental engineering basis for power electronics analysis, design, and implementation, offering broad and in-depth coverage of basic material. The text's unifying framework includes the physical implications of circuit laws, switching circuit analysis, and the basis for converter operation and control. Dc-dc, ac-dc, dc-ac, and ac-ac conversion tasks are examined and principles of resonant converters and discontinuous converters are discussed. Models for real devices and components are developed in depth, including models for real capacitors, inductors, wire connections, and power semiconductors. Magnetic device design is introduced, and thermal management and drivers for power semiconductors are addressed. Control system aspects of converters are discussed, and both small-signal and geometric controls are explored. Many examples show ways to use modern computer tools such as Mathcad, Matlab, and Mathematica to aid in the analysis and design of conversion circuits. Featuring a fundamental approach to power electronics coupled with extensive discussion of design and implementation issues, Elements of Power Electronics serves as an ideal text for courses in power electronics and as a helpful guide for engineers new to the field. Special features of the text include: · More than 160 examples, particularly design examples, and 350 chapter problems that support the presented concepts. · An extensive World Wide Web site (http://power.ece.uiuc.edu/krein_text) which includes additional problems, laboratory materials, selected solutions for students, computer-based examples, analysis tools for Mathcad, Matlab, and Mathematica, and author contact. · A solutions manual which will be made available to registered faculty via both the World Wide Web site (http://power.ece.uiuc.edu/krein_text)and an ftp site (ftp://power.ece.uiuc.edu/krein_text).
