This book examines seven French language films, produced between 1952-1991 by well-know directors, which have enjoyed considerable popular and critical... success. In these films--Jeux interdits (Clement), Les Quatre cents coups (Truffaut), Rue Case-Negres (Palcy), Le grand-Chemin (Hubert), Au Revoir les enfants (Malle), La Gloire de mon pere, and Le Chateau de ma mere (Robert)--one finds a unifying common denominator: childhood. During these years French society was in a sense rediscovering itself through the innocence and vulnerability of children. This study highlights the narrative styles of the literary works and their filmic adaptations by analyzing temporal schemes, subjectivity of narration and focalisation, child-heroes defined by their entourages, rites of passage, the meeting of child and myth, childhood in the sources of literary and cinematographic variations, and the critical view of society and the human condition presented by each filmmaker. This study is richly illustrated with stills from the various films.

Satire de la fausse dévotion, mise en scène de la crédulité, Tartuffe est sans doute l'une des plus acides comédies de Molière.(Nouvelle édition 2008)

Afro-Brazilian women find their literary identity in these tension-edged, bilingual narratives. Exploring the rich context of what it means to be a... black Brazilian, each piece transforms the cruel day-to-day realities, through the prism of fiction, into stories of hope for a different future. Instruments of political and social change, these narratives invite readers to explore and analyze a lesser-known aspect of the African diaspora and come to understand the universality and specificity of contemporary Brazilian literature by African women.

Being human is neither abstract nor hypothetical. It is concrete, visceral, and embodied in the everyday experience and relationships that determine who... we are. In that case, argues distinguished theologian Shawn Copeland, we have much to learn from the embodied experience of black women who, for centuries, have borne in their bodies the identities and pathologies of those in power. With rare insight and conviction, Copeland demonstrates how black women's experience and oppression cast a completely different light on our theological theorems and pious platitudes and reveal them as a kind of mental colonization that still operates powerfully in our economic and political configurations today. Further, Copeland argues, race and embodiment and relations of power not only reframe theological anthropology but also our notions of discipleship, church, and Christ as well. In fact, she argues, our postmodern situation - marked decidedly by the realities of race, conflict, the remains of colonizing myths, and the health of bodies - affords an opportunity to be human (and to be the body of Christ) with new clarity and effect.

When it comes to the history of the universe, many believe that science and faith are mutually exclusive. But in this revised version of Origins,... physics professors Loren and Deborah Haarsma explore what God's Word and God's world teach us about creation, evolution, and intelligent design.Clearly explaining the science, the authors focus on areas where Christians agree. They also present the strengths and weaknesses of areas where Christians differ.Origins helps you develop a deeper understanding of the origins of the universe and sort out your own views on faith and science. Small group discussion questions follow each chapter. A companion website provides resources for further study.
