The framework for teaching is a research-based set of components of instruction that are grounded in a constructivist view of learning and teaching. The... framework may be used for many purposes, but its full value is realized as the foundation for professional conversations among practitioners as they seek to enhance their skill in the complex task of teaching. The framework may be used as the foundation of a school’s or district’s recruitment and hiring, mentoring, coaching, professional development, and teacher evaluation processes, thus linking all those activities together and helping teachers become more thoughtful practitioners. The actions teachers can take to improve student learning are clearly identified and fall under four domains of teaching responsibility: Planning and Preparation, the School Environment, Instruction, and Professional Responsibilities. Within the domains are 22 components and 76 descriptive elements that further refine our understanding of what teaching is all about. The framework defines four levels of performance--Unsatisfactory, Basic, Proficient, and Distinguished--for each element, providing a valuable tool that all teachers can use. This second edition has been revised and updated and also includes frameworks for school specialists, such as school nurses, counselors, library and media specialists, and instructional coaches. Comprehensive, clear, and applicable to teaching across the K–12 spectrum, the framework for teaching described in this book is based on the PRAXIS III: Classroom Performance Assessment criteria developed by Educational Testing Service and is compatible with INTASC standards.

This book?will help change the paradigm that has gripped the mental health professions for so long and will be a positive boost for those who know there... must be a better and more affirmative way to do this important work. -Dennis Saleebey, DSW Professor Emeritus School of Social Welfare, University of Kansas In this book, Kim Anderson demonstrates the extent to which individuals with histories of family violence can have self-correcting tendencies that promote their positive adaptation in overcoming trauma. These strengths, which often go unrecognized or underappreciated, can be used for healing. This book assists mental health practitioners in identifying, supporting, and validating the resilient capacities of their clients. Anderson provides new conceptual frameworks and clinical strategies for integrating resilience-oriented and strengths-based treatment with survivors of family violence. The book discusses resilience in survivors of childhood incest, children of battered women, and individuals formerly in violent domestic relationships. Key topics discussed: Dynamics and consequences of family oppression and violence The power of recovery and posttraumatic growth Assessments that capture client strengths, resilience, and acts of resistance Spirituality: making meaning of one's trauma and purpose in life This book challenges the premise that survivors who have suffered from family violence will remain wounded throughout life. Anderson underscores the resourcefulness of clients, and illuminates the many ways people prevail during and in the aftermath of family violence.

Are we missing the opportunity to reach struggling learners from the very beginning? Are we hastily--and unnecessarily--referring students to... intervention programs that substitute for high-quality core instruction? What if we could eliminate the need for intervention programs in the first place?Response to Intervention (RTI) programs are only as powerful and effective as the core instruction on which they re built. High-quality instruction, then, is the key ingredient that helps all students excel, and it s at the heart of Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey s unique approach to the RTI model--Response to Instruction and Intervention, or RTI2.In Enhancing RTI, the authors argue that students learn best when classroom instruction and supplemental intervention mirror each other in both content and purpose. This book provides K 12 teachers with the knowledge and tools they need to implement a cohesive RTI2 system that helps all children learn by proactively addressing their needs. To this end, you will learn how to* Integrate and align core instruction and supplemental intervention.* Assess your own classroom instruction, in addition to your students responses to it.* Strengthen existing school improvement efforts within an RTI2 framework.* Utilize systematic feedback to raise student achievement.Fisher and Frey maintain that the RTI2 model not only promotes active student learning, but it also, when done right, promotes a culture of hardwired excellence at all levels of instruction.

William H. McNeill is known for his ability to portray the grand sweep of history. Now two of his popular books and an essay previously unavailable in... book form are brought together in this new paperback edition. In The Human Condition McNeill provides a provocative interpretation of history as a competition of parasites, both biological and human. In The Great Frontier he questions the notion of "frontier freedom" through an examination of European expansion. The concluding essay speculates on the role of catastrophe in our lives. About The Human Condition: "A remarkable tour de force . . . . An elegant, intelligent and scholarly essay."--J. H. Hexter, The New York Times Book Review "A brilliant new interpretation of world history."--David Graber, The Los Angeles Times Book Review About The Great Frontier: There is virtually no one in the profession who can match McNeill as a synthesizer--or, for that matter, as an interdisciplinary historian. . . . There is more insight in this volume than in others of double or triple the length."--David Courtwright, Journal of Interdisciplinary History

Educators devoted to school reform focus all too often on the isolated components of K-12 education--this is the essential premise of this powerful new... book. If we are truly committed to improving our schools, the author contends, then we must focus on the interdependence of variables that affect student learning, both inside and outside the classroom. The book is divided into three distinct parts. In Part 1, Danielson introduces the Four Circles Model to define the criteria for successful school improvement: Everything educators do to help their students learn must be based on what educators want (school, district, or state goals), believe (values and principles), and know (educational research). In Part 2, the author provides a framework for improving schools--including curriculum, team planning, and policies and practices affecting students--and connects every concept to the criteria presented in Part 1. She also provides a handy rubric at the end of each chapter, both as a summary of main points and as a tool for educators to gauge the needs of their school. Part 3 offers readers guidelines on how best to implement the framework using action planning. Brimming with perceptive advice and thought-provoking arguments, this book is both a wake-up call and a roadmap to success for those determined to provide students with the best education possible.
